I haven't watched it but Texas Roadhouse actually has really good steaks. I'm watching it but had to comment. They are spot on so far.
I watched this a week or so ago. Not really surprised at the No.1 in a reasonable price category, & wife confirmed as it's here favorite steak next to mine.
I remember Steak & Ale, Bonanza, and Ponderosa. Steak & Ale was just ‘okay’ in my opinion. There was really nothing good about Ponderosa or Bonanza to me. I did have some good steaks at Outback in the early 90’s, but not since then. We went to Saltgrass when they first opened in the part of Texas where we were, and all of us left hungry. I guess Texas Roadhouse is acceptable, all things considered. Never been to a really expensive steakhouse though. But I can cook a better steak than any steak I’ve ever eaten in a restaurant.

My personal experience for the top 3 for a bone-in Rib Eye:

1. The Capital Grille - Houston, Westheimer (expensive but worth it)
2. Longhorn Steakhouse (very affordable and delicious steak)
3. Texas Roadhouse (very affordable, delicious steak and a great onion blossom)
Not a chain but Cattleman s in Stockyard City is very good.....

Yes Sir!
I've had Del Frisco's, and everything was damned good. Saltgrass is not bad for the price, but sometimes the piece of meat you end up with isn't as good as the last time. Logan's Roadhouse and Outback really didn't impress me at all.

Never tried Texas Road House. Might give it a whirl one of these days.

But not bad for a clam who voted for Biden.
I like Texas Roadhouse, but they’re all those “Cookie Cutter” deals with lousy acoustics and loud pop/country music playing. Kinda hard for me & Wifey to carry on a conversation.
I like Longhorn a little better because we can talk easily there, but I gotta say I’ve never had a bad steak at either one.
A while back, a friend told me to go to The Tower Ridge Inn, on Rt 30 just west of McConnlesburg. They’re local, but they’re every bit as good as any other steakhouses anyplace I’ve been, and better than most. Plus they have Pickle Fries and all the other appetizers that the other guys offer.
Wifey and I go there quite often.

Fogodechao is really good, I call it death by meat. They keep bringing it until you say uncle or pop, whichever comes first.

Definitely one of the top five steaks I've ever had was at Cattleman's steakhouse in Fabens TX which is outside of El Paso. Not a chain and I don't think it's got anything to do with the other cattleman's mentioned. They do a fantastic steak though.

Never had a bad steak at Outback. Ruth’s Chris is my favorite.
TX roadhouse for the win.

I liked Logan’s also before they shutdown.
Well here's the thing about steak. You can get a bad one and I can get a good one. They haven't found a way to standardize a steer. Oh, they can grade meat but when it comes to flavor, tenderness or how it's cooked, that will all vary. I've had good and not so good steak from Outback, Texas Roadhouse and Longhorn. If you want prime steak, you're not going to a chain to get it.

Note: when cooking a Filet Minon rare, take it out of the freezer for a while before cooking it... nothing like a frozen center of red beef in an expensive steak.

Could have been worse - they might have thawed it in the microwave.
The only chain steakhouses I have any experience with are Outback, Texas Roadhouse, Longhorn and Ruth's Chris. Outback ain't that great, don't go there anymore anyway because of their politics. Texas Roadhouse is okay, but, as someone else mentioned, it's too loud and the wrong kind of music. Longhorn we've always been happy at and if on the road and don't know the local, it's a go to. Ruth's Chris does a nice job, but wish they had a better wine selection. Locally, Hall's Chop House in Charleston SC is unbeatable. Everything is always perfect, drinks, food, wine, service and food. Of course, the wife and I can blow $300 to $400 for dinner...but it's way more than just food to eat.

Last night we had steak at home. We do that about every two weeks. Usually it's 2" thick USDA Prime ribeyes cooked over mesquite and a good bottle of wine...nothing else. I can cook a good steak, but the good chains, TRH, Longhorn, Ruth's Chris, have purchasing power and a lot of R and D to support what they're doing. They cook thousands of steaks a night. I can no more consistently out do them than I can, with my once every couple of weeks informal trip to the sporting clays course, outshoot the guy who lives five minutes away and shoots a thousand targets a week.

When Logan's first opened up around here 20-25 years ago, they had very good food for the price range they were in. Can't say that now. They are pretty much a place of last resort for me.

I'm sure we all have favorite local spots and should support them that are arguably "the best". I can name a few around the country too that are fantastic.

To answer the question about Best National Chain, I always end up comparing everything to Ruth's Chris so that is my answer.

In Jacksonville, we have 2 Ruth's, counting the store at PVB. Anyway, both have been managed very well. The store in town has been one of the top performing Ruth's and lives up to its reputation. The menu is classic chophouse and I cant remember being let down by a meal at that location. I have entertained customers, friends, and family there many times and believe in that store.

A close 2nd is Capital Grill. Food is great. Their menu can be a touch (just a bit) more complex than Ruth's. I'm not knocking it; I just happen to like Ruth's straight forward concept slightly more. Both are close to a pick 'em but Ruth's has the location in our town.

Del Frisco's is awesome but I haven't been in them near as much as Ruth's. I cant remember a bad meal so have nothing but good things to say about them. If we had one in town, I would hit it up more but my experiences have been out of town.

3 Forks is good, just hasnt overly impressed me.

Smith and Wollensky has been good. I end up getting seafood there more, thus why I rate it behind Ruth's, Capital, and Del Friscos. Good and I like it, especially the downtown store in Boston.

Morton's has been hit and miss with me. We had one for 10 years or so and it had good food but the atmosphere was off compared to Ruth's and Captial. We just got Morton's back about 2 years ago and it's doing better in a new location.

Nah, just like to trade jabs is all

Jimmy and his crew be cool
I just finished my weekly Sunday night NY strip. Not the best I've ever cooked, far from even mediocre. The last 16# loin I sliced & trimmed came off a very well cared for cow. The one I'll be knawing on for the next 4 or 5 weeks might have been a little older, or didn't eat as good. But it is better than anything I wish to pay for out somewhere.

When out, wife's favorite is Longhorn. I think they serve good cuts of beef, but not crazy about their rub. I used to like Logans & there's still one in Lex. But they have gone downhill IMO.

When eating steak out, I usually draw he line at a $25 - $30 steak. The next step up is usually double that price & many times it's hard to tell the difference.
Local Longhorn sucks.
You can get a table anytime you want.
Texas Roadhouse is about 1 mile away, suckers wait an hour plus there.

Never ate at the fancy ones.
I'm so tight and practicle I'd be Amish if I could grow a good beard,
And I ain't gonna drop $150 for supper with Momma when I can buy two ribeye primals
for the same dough.

Slice them babies by hand, vac-seal, and feed the whole famdamly 10
good steak dinners.

7mmbuster.
Thanks for the tip.
Would make nice short drive for us some evening.

No chain measures up to the flame cooked backyard grill. No comparison.

Try a bourbon marinade if you want a great steak

Don't measure any ingredients, just mix, marinate at least overnite and grill.

Lots of Whiskey
Jigger of Soy sauce
Jigger of Wosterchire
Handful of Brown Sugar
Squirt of Dijon Mustard
Salt
Pepper
Garlic
Onion Powder
Plus Whatevever you want

Longhorn gets the nod here. Steaks are good, but my wife goes gaga over their chocolate stampede. We order one and share it, and even that can be a struggle.
If you want go international I would give La Casa del Caballo in Saltillo Mexico my vote. It is a little unnerving when they ask for your cell phone when a VIP customer comes in. Could be cops or cartel.

Note to self when down that way.
I never had a less than average experience at Longhorn. Great food. Great service. Every time.
Texas de Brazil is pretty damn good for a national chain. The sirloin cap is a great piece of meat.

Been a looong time since I’ve been in a longhorn. Recall them being decent. Ruth’s has a good steak but I always leave feeling a bit underwhelmed.

Outback is to steaks what Red Lobster is to seafood.

who has got the best chicken-fried steak?
[/quote]

Best I ever had was at a little roadside eatery somewhere out in cattle country near Myakka City, Florida. Wish I could remember the name, it was ten years ago.
Nothing fancy, but hunting photos on the walls (mostly wild hog), hunting magazines for sale on a rack at the cash register, parking lot full of 4x4 pickups. Made me feel right at home.
I see Outback mentioned and I have to say a couple of the worst steaks I ever had were at Outback and a couple of the best I've had were at the same place... I guess that is the problem with Outback, just can't get a consistent meal there and the service is about the same...

We have a steak place in Portland that everyone raves about by the name of Ringside... for the life of me, I don't know what people are raving about... the couple times I've eaten there, it was so dark inside you literally had to light a match to read the menus. And the steaks I had there you could barely cut with a steak knife- or at least their version of a worn out old hacksaw blade they called a steak knife... salad sucked and they only had one choice of salad dressing that seemed like a mix of Thousand Island, French, and Blue cheese that all got mixed up in a five gallon bucket.... the only remarkable thing about that place was how bad it was and I'm not shy about sharing that information with people asking me for recommendations...

Bob
The only thing I ever liked at Outback was their shrimp tacos, which were surprisingly good.

But I think they took them off the menu. I guess by actually being good, they made the rest of the menu seem even schittier.

Best one here in Flagstaff is at Miz Zips.
One of the best Chicken fried steaks is at Mary's Cafe in Strawn Texas.

Has to be one of the best anywhere, but I don't believe it's a "chain." .

As far as chain restaurants, 1. Saltgrass, 2. Longhorn, 3 Outback
Texas Roadhouse.

Try the ribs. Get the full slab. You're going to want to eat a full slab.
I remember a chain called "red horse steak house". Never ate at one. Somehow the name doesn't bring to mind a fine sirloin. What's the saying about whip marks from the jockey?
I've had a couple of the filets at Longhorn, pretty darn good as far as national chains go.

Not near as good as my own grown on my grill though.

I used to live in NYC and S&W was not in the the top 5 in NYC..Their product AND C@S is spotty. Can be very good but Outback would rival them at times.

To each his own. I have not been to the NYC location, so have no opinion.

But I can say I have never had an OB steak that came even *close* to a S&W steak I've had. It is really not even a contest in my personal experience.

And, I like OB as a decent, cheap steak shop.

But hell, I like a $1 coffee from Mc Donald's vs a $5 Starbucks coffee....

To each his own!

Don't measure any ingredients, just mix, marinate at least overnite and grill.

Lots of Whiskey
Jigger of Soy sauce
Jigger of Wosterchire
Handful of Brown Sugar
Squirt of Dijon Mustard
Salt
Pepper
Garlic
Onion Powder

Plenty of quote tag failures above, but I think the general thought was, "don't marinate your steak".

Agreed.

Dry rub at most. Sous Vide and sear off, or blast torch it on 1200 degree infrared to black and blue.

A DRY steak makes a TASTY steak, at least in my humble opinion.

It is a personal preference.

lol. stick to your social justice virtue signaling

Black and blue? Doesn't that mean charred outside and raw elsewhere?

Caramelized crust outside (not "charred", or burned), COLD RED RAW center.

LOL.

Pretty much on record here (for years) as being a steak fan of the black and blue variety.
20+ years ago I think Outback was decent. At least on par with Longhorns.

Anymore they are awful. I’d sooner pocket the cash and stop at Arby’s. Lol.

Applebee's is another massive failure.

It was at least *somewhat* edible 10 years ago while on business trips.

Now?

No....

A 21 oz Wagyu, black and blue, is sizzling hot on the outside, and butter tender cold, raw on the inside.

Never been there, friend?
Raw is not the tenderest. It may be softer to the touch, but it does not part as easily to the tooth.

It is not about "raw".

Maybe you have not had a high quality cut, made perfectly black and blue.

I have NEVER had a wagyu B&B that was not like butter.

To each his own,
I have had good steaks at non-chain restaurants. I think the problem is many people like to go to chains because they know what they are getting. But if I can find a non-chain it is usually better. Also I am going to have to try Longhorn again. I went to one one time at a location I lived in and did not care for it, so we never went back.
You've been pretty emphatic about raw.

Troof.
There is a reason tartare is usually chopped or very thinly sliced.

I prefer a high quality steak black and blue.

I know some folks like well done.

Others don't like steak at all.

I can't split a burger with my wife because she wants it murdered, and I want it medium rare.

It is all personal preference.

I don't really care who likes what, and I am not one to judge if someone has a different personal preference.

I'll engage in a friendly debate about it here for fun, but it is rarely friendly and if you like (fill in the blank steak doneness) you are a homo liberal, so there is that........

Side note:

I have a restaurant quality deli slicer.

One of our favorite summer time, back deck appetizers is beef carpaccio. (I think I have posted it here in the past)

Eye of round, semi-frozen - I can get that sliced paper thin....

Laid out on a cold plate. Drizzled with a bit of EVOO, dusted with salt and course ground pepper. An arugula salad (tossed with salt, pepper, lemon juice, and olive oil) served in the center of the plate.

I miss summer already.........
Good stuff for sure.
Past medium rare is not good. Neither is a raw for a thick steak.

Eye of round for Carpaccio? Low rent.

GFY grin
It's coarse ground pepper BTW.
Sizzler family steak house is good.
Texas Roadhouse is solid.

Applebees quesadilla burger is really good. I always let my family choose the restaurant. Whatever makes them happy, it's just food. I can live on plain yogurt, I'm not really picky. I do expect more when I pay more.
These Two steakhouses always interested me but I have never ate at them. Maybe someone on here has.

Back in 2007 Texas Monthly named Pappas Bros. Steakhouse the best in Texas. I believe there are only two so not really a chain. One in Houston and one in Dallas. They also run Pappdeaux's and Pappasitos which I have ate at and they are both pretty damn good.

I've heard Ruth's Chris adds on the radio but have never been there.
I've never had anything but a delicious ribeye at the Texas Roadhouse. They have that down.

Sometime, if I ever HAVE to go to Minneapolis, I want to check out Manny's Steak House. It's supposed to be extremely good but $pendy.

https://mannyssteakhouse.com/

***Edit***

Phucgk that! I just checked out their menu. I'm not paying $80 + for a steak when I have the best natural fed beef in my freezer! lol

I've been to a handful of retirement dinners there and always opted for the Colorado ribeye. Their seafood tower app is also amazing. Haven't been back since my retirement.

The Old Homestead was a great steak experience as well. And, heresy I know, but I think Lugers is overrated.

Small East Texas town Avinger. 5D Steakhouse. Owner is a cattle rancher and QC is from pasture to plate. Outstanding in every aspect. Highly recommend.

No kidding.

Pay all that money for something of lower quality than you get at home?

Just so you didn't have to cook it?

Not for this guy.

I'll eat coconut shrimps[Out-n-back] or salad and bloomin onion at 'steakhouses', pizza or other Italian are about all I look forward to when eating out.
Since the OP asked for regional, Longhorns is my choice. Texas Roadhouse is ok, just not great. Logan's, nah, I'll just go to McDonalds. Was at a company dinner one night there, HR guy orders a rack of ribs. They were cold. He tells the waitress. Her response, I kid you not "Well I don't know why, I just pulled them out of the microwave".

Ruth's Chris is good, was at one 3 weekends ago with wife. The quality of the food is not equal to the bill though.

Hard to beat buying prime steaks from my buddy's butcher shop and cooking over chunk charcoal.

Since we turned this international-the best steakhouse (and it is a chain, in Mexico) https://www.laestanciaargentina.com/ in Leon, Mexico. I worked there for a year, and we would eat there at least twice a week. It was a half mile walk back to the hotel, and that was always a walk in misery from eating too much. Rib-eye cap is the best cut of meat to get.

This.

I never had a bad meal or experience at Outback in various locations until we moved here. It was so bad that I took it up the ladder and got an apology and $60 worth of freebies, but I never bothered to use them. Gave them away.

I ate at Ruth Chris once on a business trip to DC. No soap in the men's room and staff didn't seem to care. Killed my appetite wondering if and how the staff washed their hands.

Locally, Texas Roadhouse is pretty good. You get good value and the managers and staff seem to have their heads on straight. The local non-chains are mostly unimpressive. More hype than value delivered, a lot of tourism so don't seem to care about local customers' repeat business. Overpriced for what you get, for the most part.

Paul

I rarely order steak out; but we have a Fleming's in town and it is quite good
Ruth's Chris Steakhouse is my favorite and my customers seem to like it very much, so win/win.

Things I hate: tomatoes, pasta, seafood. I like fried fish but all the saltwater bugs and slime molds people eat, nuh uh. I'd rather have a 2-3# steak and skip all the other stuff.
Can't believe none of you have mentioned Sizzler.
Del Frisco and Flemings, Ruth Chris in a pinch.

There used to be two of em’ in Flagstaff. I’ve been to em’ both. Kinda like small Golden Corral’s where you can also order a steak if ya’ want. I think the one closer to the college is still open, but I think the one on Route 66 East is history. Honestly, I’d rather eat at Del Taco anyway.
And then there was the fake Sizzler, Western Steer. If I remember right, their dessert was a sundae cup of lime jello with a blob of canned whipped cream squirted on top.

Yeah, when you're ripping off Sizzler, you're pretty desperate.
I went to a Golden Corral in Albuquerque with my son when he was a boy about 10 years ago and I schit you not, they had a chocolate fountain there...! Stale graham crackers and hard marshmallows and the like that you could hold under it and get em’ coated with chocolate.

I always skip the chocolate fountain and go for the hog trough with ten pounds of bread pudding in it. That, and the cheap grocery store blueberry pie.

Best thing at Golden Corral is the fake crabmeat salad on the salad bar. I can eat a couple plates of that stuff.
OO,

That video was surprisingly good and mirrors my experiences with the exception of Ruth’s Kris.

I have tried three different locations and they were all Texas Roarhouse grade with a Morton’s price.

Morton’s used to be the bomb. It’s too bad they’ve gone to schit.

Yep, those things are good.

I miss cheap chinese buffets. The covid nazis have made all of them around here go from buffets where you pile five pounds of schitt on a plate yourself, to having servers. You have to go through a line and ask them for stuff now.

Just ain't the same when you have to beg Pablo the Illegal Immigrant Chinee Buffet Server for an extra spoonful of General Tso Chicken.
Not an answer on a steakhouse per se but if you haven't tried a dry aged steak, you have no idea what you're missing. And I'm not talking about a ribeye some azzhole tossed in fridge for a few days, but a true 30+ day, properly dry aged steak. Dry aged will forever change your expectations of steak.

I agree that many of the bigger named steak houses have gone downhill. I still like Ruth's... unfortunately they don't offer dry aged.

This guys is well... a bit eclectic but he knows how to grill and he's big on dry aged steak.

My wife and I are going to try one of two local steakhouses this weekend. They both offer dry aged so I’m betting they’re legit.

There is a Palm in Miami that I have never had. Wouldn’t mind trying one.

The only bad thing about Texas Roadhouse is,..if you go there during typical dinner hours there's a waiting list. It seems like it's that way at all of them.

That is certainly true of the one in Cedar Rapids; but then, I don't believe that any house built in Cedar Rapids in the last 75 years or so has a kitchen in it, given the lines to get in anyplace for supper (or to get something from a drive-thru these days).

It's not worth waiting for, so I never wait. I go to Longhorns or Salt Grass instead, where there is never a wait.

We always make it a point to go at off peak hours. Usually get seated almost as soon as we walk in.
Used to go to one of the Broker restaurants in Denver, that was pretty damn good...

The Depot in Missoula used to have the best prime rib going but last time there it was average

Horseman's Lodge in Flagstaff was pretty good when Bob Lupo owned it, but now not so much...

The Mormon Lake Inn or whatever they are calling it now was good when I was there years ago...

Anybody ever had a ribeye from Ray's Tavern in Green River Utah? That's pretty good food and always a stop on the way elk hunting in Az...
Between Texas Hohouse and Longhorn, one of them serves bread and one serves rolls if I remember correctly. The rolls are better than the little loaf of bread.
How many of these joints use a jaccard?
Geeze....probably a bunch of em...

I think that it is. They are the cook your own steak over a common grill. They have an advisor at the grill suggesting seasons and drinks. A Ton of fun there. I drove myself into a gout attack over the course of a week there.

Definitely one of the top five steaks I've ever had was at Cattleman's steakhouse in Fabens TX which is outside of El Paso. Not a chain and I don't think it's got anything to do with the other cattleman's mentioned. They do a fantastic steak though.

Primecut? Or PrimeQuarter? In Green Bay is like that. Good steaks. I can eat a pile of garlic’d Texas Toast browned on the grill as I’m waiting to cook my steak, it’s good meat, but the novelty is gone the first time you go there.

I agree that many of the bigger named steak houses have gone downhill. I still like Ruth's... unfortunately they don't offer dry aged.

Was watching a Netflix series about bbq.

Guy in Australia was dry aging steaks for 200 days. Basting with liquid fat every so often.
They wouldn’t like it when I spit on the grill to check it for the right heat, like at the casa

Out on the pipeline for 16 years, and eating out every night, I discovered that Longhorn Steakhouse was the best quality ribeye at the best price. Outback used to be pretty good in the early 2000's but they changed their beef source. I found that out by talking to the restaurant managers, who agreed their beef was poor quality at that time (mid-2000's) The Longhorn mangers I talked to said that company executives had figured out that beef quality was the most important success factor for their restaurants. I didn't start eating steaks at Texas Road House until I retired and moved back to Oklahoma City. I like how they allow you to pick out your own steak, and their Ribeye has alot of fat and marbling, which gives it a very good flavor.

You spit on your finger quick and then touch the grill. For some reason people don't get as offended.

What do you usually get at Del Friscos?

Start w/ a seafood tower if at least 2 of you. My favorite is the 45 day aged ribeye, my wife likes their lobster tail better than anyones. Get the full tail, you can order by size and it is finished tableside. We split a creamed spinach and an au gratin potatoes. Go hungry forget the budgetgrin

PS The Palm here in LV is very good but I have not been in over a year. You must make reservations well in advance unless you are known. I'm not but my kid is so I let him pay the bill.

bon appetite mon petit chou

Scared of dry aged, about $70- $80 bucks around here. What if it rocks my world? What to do for an encore?

I've been to 3 or 4 steak places that at one time were rated in the top 10 in the US. Florida, Colorado & Ohio. Just their basic strip, med. rare. Their names escape me now, The Buckhorn Exchange in Denver was good, but not over the top. They were once rated high, but rarely make the top 10 or 20 theses days.

I've paid a hundred bucks for what was supposed to be Kobe, but later found out that true Kobe is available in only 11 restaurants in the entire US. Not enough to go to all those places claiming so. They've pretty much stopped the claims, it's Wagu, good, but not that good.

I didn't bring up Texas de Brazil as I see it different. I call it a meat house. Their steak is good, as well as many other cuts. But it's not my idea of a sit down steak dinner with a specialty like my preferred NYS.

When I go out to eat, it's not likely steak. I've continuously worked on my own home cooked steaks for years & I'd go broke visiting a restaurant that happened to suit me better.

I think that it is. They are the cook your own steak over a common grill. They have an advisor at the grill suggesting seasons and drinks. A Ton of fun there. I drove myself into a gout attack over the course of a week there.

I guess the Black Rock Grill wouldn't be for you?
Charcoal grill a sirloin roast someday.

A friend showed me how many years ago. He'd get a big roast about 1.5 inches thick.

Work meat tenderizer into both sides of it with a fork,,...lots of charcoal,..let it get *hot* before you put the meat on the grill. It'll dry out if the grill isn't hot enough to sear it as soon as you put it on.

Only turn it once. The timing is a bit tricky. But it's a lot better than you would expect if you hit it just right.

A few of us would get together drinking beer and he'd grill a roast. We'd eat it like cavemen. Just cut a chunk off of it and eat it,...a beer in one hand, a chunk of grilled roast in the other.
Flemings is hard to beat .

Do patrons have to clean and restock the kitchen at the end of the shift?

That how they do it in California with tri tip roasts. A big old oak fire with the grill about 24" above. Lots of party stores has a gaucho cooking in the parking lot. Santa Maria seasoning.

I've heard Ruth's Chris adds on the radio but have never been there.

Pappas Bros. Steakhouse puts out exceptional food. My experience is in Houston on Westheimer.

Brings back memories. I spent a few summers in late HS and early college in Santa Barbara (working a side job - my buddy and I worked for some lame ass dude named Tony Hawk, who he grew up with).

Anyhow, more than one trip to SLO, and more than one similar grill experiences.....

If Cali was not such a chit hole, I'd (almost) be interested in a visit to SB/SLO. Beautiful part of the state.
If you think Texas Roadhouse is good you need to get out more or stay home . I was embarrassed to take an African ph friend there. If that’s your best choice do yourself a favor and grill a prime steak at home. They shouldn’t even be able to use the word Texas. We have helluva a lot better beef in Texas than what they offer. LOL.

We worked in a dingy garage in 1992 that first summer with Tony (sometimes) and his buddy Per (more frequently) when they became "birdhouse"

My friend who knew them (Justin) knew Tony from early on in San Diego, where they were both born.

It was a fun 3 summers, from what I remember!

Damn typos... meant duck
None of the brazilian steakhouses compare after you've had the real thing. Cupim is something you can't get at a fake brazilian steakhouse here.
anybody mention Western Sizzlin'? or Ponderosa? those are great on friday nights when the walmart crowd waddles in and starts sneezing on the salad bar. if you don't get your steak on a cafeteria tray, you're paying too much.
Outback seems to be using pumped meat for some time now and that is an absolute turnoff for me.

May have a generically tenderness that helps with the tenderness consistency on a large scale but that texture is not natural.
Of the chains mentioned, TX Roadhouse doesn't have phenomenal steaks but they are tasty and everything I have had on the menu is flavorful and consistently good.

Corporate seems to have it right when they train management because in my experience, the managers at the different roadhouses I have been to are excellent with their customer service.

I agree it is too dang loud for conversation though.

Someone got a pay raise.....
Best steak ever camp Clark Afghanistan chow hall! Then again might of been we were in Afghanistan our cooks sucked ass and we didn't know any better. We moved to Camp Clark the head cook for kbr was a chef at one of the big name hotels in Vegas. He said he was to old to join but wanted to serve his country so he got a job with kbr running a dining facility..
Reata's is worth a mention but not just steaks. I think there are only two locations that I know of....
Ate at a capitol Grille on business GA. Couldn't believe it was a chain. Fantastic.

Haven't been to a ruth Chris in a while. Last was a cattle call (no pun intended) meeting invite. It was mediocre. That must of been 10 years ago.

Last good high end Steakhouse was a few years back in Chicago. The bone in ribeye was great. Don't remember the name of it. It would never meet fire code. Place was packed.

We've got a couple of local places that do decent steaks, so can go there with no wait, take the fam, and have a martini or two and a good meal.
Morton’s or the Palm. Not a lot of outlets, but they serve prime beef.
The best steak I have had was at a place in San Antonio in 1968 I ate at while TDY in the army for a few days. I don't remember the name of the place but it was a good steak. I ate at Ruth Chris in Salt Lake 14 years ago with my supervisor and remember him asking if they had any healthy food there. The waiter puffed his chest out and stated "We do not serve health food at Ruth Chris." I have eaten at several Outback"s. They were pretty good steaks but the first time I ate at one of them was in Anchorage and the steak was horrible. The last time I ate there was in Cupertino across the street from Apple and it was also horrible. All of the ones in between were decent. The absolute worst steak I have eaten was in the mess hall at the 50th Engineers at West Point in 1968. But that is the only mess hall that ever served steak while I was in the army.

I used to buy a New York strip roast from Costco or Smart and Final and age it in the fridge up to it's expiration date and them cut it into steaks and freeze them. That made for some good tender steaks. I haven't eaten beef in a couple of years as my freezer is full of good elk steaks now.
I found a Prime, whole strip loin at a reputable butcher shop yesterday for under $9 a lb. Guess I won't be in a steak house for about 8 more weeks.

Remsen, is that you?
Some basic industry knowledge for discussing steaks.

90%+ of the beef in the U.S. comes from cattle that are raised on grass, and then finished on corn or another grain for a few months.
Corn is much richer and causes the cattle to put on weight in the form of fat.

At the time of slaughter, the U.S.D.A. inspects all carcasses for health reasons.

The packing house has the option to pay a fee to have each carcass “graded” for marbling.
This grading process determines the amount of fat mixed in with the lean beef.
Beef with higher amounts of fat “marbled” through the beef is considered desirable and sells for more money per pound.
The carcass is then “roll stamped” with a grade such as “Select”, “Choice’ or “Prime”.

If the packing house does not think a carcass will grade very high, they can choose to not pay the fee, and the carcass will be considered “No Roll”, or ungraded.

*No Roll or ungraded beef is used everywhere for canned and frozen processers like the premade beef stew you see in grocery stores to dog food and typical ground beef.

*Select graded beef is utilized everywhere a customer is looking for consistent quality at a reasonable price. Most of the products you see in average grocery stores is select graded.

*Choice is a noticeable step up in tenderness and juiciness.
Many grocery stores sell choice beef, and most decent steakhouses will use only choice or better.

*USDA graded “Prime” is a step up from Choice. Typically, only the top 2% of cattle will grade out as Prime. It is reflected in the price. A Prime steak can cost 50% more than a choice steak.
High end steak houses buy up almost all the USDA Prime middle cuts like Ribeye, Striploin (New York steaks) and tenderloin (Filet Mignon steaks).
Names like Ruth Criss, Flemings and Mortons. They typically charge $50 or more for an “ala cart” steak.

*Grass fed, refers to beef that has not been grain finished.
Grass fed is only a tiny fraction of the beef on the commercial market.

I know that it is possible to get a tender, juicy steak from grass fed beef, but that is the exception, not the rule.
For the most part, grass fed beef will be dryer, tougher and slightly gamey tasting when compared to it’s grain finished counterpart.

Some people prefer grass fed beef. I won’t argue with them, To each his own.

This is a really good post.
To those that have money and care:

My wife and I decided on Capital Grille for last night's dinner.

A+ all around. Martini's were off the charts good. I arrived drunk so only had two.

Service was impeccable. And I am a royal ass hole when it comes to service.

I wanted my ribeye cold in the middle and that is exactly how they brought it to me. Perfection.

Out the door cost:

My friends say the Reata Restaurant in Fort Worth is tops. There's also one in Alpine, so that makes it a regional chain?

Hit and Run,
We’ve been to Cattleman’s Steakhouse a few times during our married life. Have enjoyed it immensely each time. It is a amazing operation.
Gonehuntin,
I worked in Downtown Fort Worth many years. When we had clients in town we would take them to Reata and Billy Bobs and make certain they got the “A” treatment. I couldn’t give a flip for Billy Bobs. Best beer in town was “White Elephant Saloon” in The Stockyards. I wasn’t beyond buying boots and hats for the right ones.

Grew up around cattle, free tip. Angus brings a premium, but Hereford or Shorthorn steer will generally give you a little better marbling. If you're looking for good steer for the money
a Jersey dairy steer will generally cut pretty good as they are fine boned, and they are smaller so you can get a smaller half if it fits your budget better. Stay away from most of the big dairy steers, especially Holsteins, you'll wind up paying for too much bone when you buy by hanging weight.

Personally, I prefer mine finished on grain.

You know as much about quality beef as you do eating pussy.

Do yourself a favor and STFU.

There is virtually nothing a Biden voter can say that is to be trusted.

Fuuck now I'm gettin' hard.
Gotta love grass fed beef.

What a deal.

Sell a substasndard product that was cheap to produce,
for a premium.

But look who buys it.

City people.

As to “chains”...this ^^^

The best steakhouse I have ever eaten at period...is Charley’s Steakhouse in Orlando, FL. There is a sister to it in Tampa...can’t vouch for that one.
There is a breed of cattle in Argentina that does cut well grass fed. Last time I was in Cordoba...ate grass-fed steaks in a steakhouse downtown there—was as good as good grain finished beef in the US.

I was surprised as my Dad is a rancher and we commercially feed as well as have our own home ranch feedlot.

In the states...all good beef is all grain finished.
Didn't bother to watch the video, did Sizzler win?
Out of the run of the mill steak houses, We go to Texas Roadhouse because it's consistently good and everything on the menu if pretty dang good. As was mentioned, their ribs and dang good too and the rolls are great as well. Now that I think of it, I have to throw in their potato skins and loaded sweet potato. Longhorn has a good steak as well but the sides and other stuff don't compare to TR to me. As far as higher end steak houses, I've not eaten at any of the main brands like Ruth's Chris or Morton's. I did go to a Don Shula's and I thought the steak was very good.
Dad told me a story recently. He took Mom to some steakhouse in Dallas. The Negress waitress was going over the specials and one of them was a delicious "Black Anus" steak. Dad asked her to repeat that since he's a bit hard of hearing. She said: "Yes, Black Anus." Dad replied: "that's what I thought you said." He told me it took a mighty effort not to bust out laughing.
HitnRun
No...but that’s where I bought my hats! Our office was in Chase Bldg and Leddy’s was just downstairs and around the corner. So that’s where we’d usually end up but have shopped w them a bit at stores in Stockyards.
The best steaks I have had out are Ruth Chris, Doe 's Eat Place, and The Butcher Shop. Not sure the last one is a chain. They had prime heavy beef.
The prime ones I cook at home are hard to match.

Big expert on beef but votes for Biden... the farmers I know didn’t do too well under EPA refs that dictate how manure is stored, amounts that can be spread on fields. Record books that had to be kept etc...
Wait til the green new deal gets signed and all out war on meat starts.

But your stupid azz voted for Biden because Trumps mean....GFY
