Dawn Wells, who famously played Mary Ann Summers, has died. She was 82.
She died in Los Angeles of COVID-19-related causes Wednesday morning, according to her publicist.
The actress starred as the unapologetic "good girl" who was stranded on an island with six other castaways. "Gilligan’s Island" ran from 1964 to 1967 – for three seasons – and yet it has never gone off the air. It continues to be screened across the world in over 30 languages.
Wells, a Reno native, represented Nevada in the Miss America pageant in 1959 before taking on the iconic role. For the role of Mary Ann, she beat out 350 other actresses, including Raquel Welch.
A cutie! She starred in a little known western, after Gilligan's Island, named Winter Hawk. Not the best movie ever but interesting. She played a pioneer girl, and at the end of the movie she rode off into the sunset with the Indian warrior Winter Hawk. A little twist on a traditional western.
They used to play this movie once a month on Turner Classic, but haven't played it in years.
I remember that movie ‘Winter Hawk’ supposed to have occurred in 1842. Indian running a pony thru 2 feet of snow when a line of telephone poles goes by in the background.

I also seem to remember seeing a barb wire fence behind the Indian camp. I mean steel post and all.

Wells and Tina Louise were friends. Louise is 4 years older, 86 in this pic. You could say that Tina didn't age well but at 86, anyone still standing has aged well.

IIRC, Dawn Wells was the only character on the Gilligan Island show that got royalties from the show. Nobody thought the show would last even a year, so none of the other actors had any type of royalty payments included in their contracts. The show is playing in syndication, so she got payments until her death.
You would have stepped on your tongue had you met her in real life. I had lunch with her several times back in the day. I managed a parking garage the Wells family owned, and parked her car often. She would get sandwiches from Tony's Delicatessen a few doors down, and we would eat them down along the Truckee River. She was very nice and had eyes that would melt an IRS agent.
