greatest female voice was Janis Joplin she could sing without music , record songs and still get #1 songs without music ,no other person ever did this !
I think KT Tunstall has an amazing emotional range, & she's so precise with a lyric. Whether or not I like a particular song, I really like the way she approaches it.
Alba Armengou is a teenager in Spain, and has been part of the Sant Andreu jazz band since she was 8. She's just an exceptional singer - got some Billie Holiday goin' on, even as she's singing in Portuguese, Spanish, French, or English. She's also damned good with a trumpet, though she approaches it differently than I would:
What these kids do in this one is unbelieveable. The harmonies are tough as hell, & they nail 'em. Also, a good chunk of the backing band are in HS or Jr. High.
I just lost one of my all time favorites. Was searching u-tube for some of her stuff and came across an anti Trump song video... fugh you bitch, shove you’re politics up your ass along with your music

Best? Maybe not, but she's definitely a great female vocalist.
Natalie Merchant lives local to me, in Ulster Co.NY. A few years back I was playing at a pancake breakfast (I play in a Americana/folk band) at a Maple Sugar Shack. We were playing on a flat bed trailer and saw a couple women and kids dancing. After the song the woman walked by our "stage" and gave us two thumbs up. It was Natalie Merchant. We saw her a year and a half ago at a local hotel/retreat called the Mohonk Mountain House. I enjoy her music and she does a nice solo show. Her politics however - - - - .

Cool story. I always liked her music. I’m sure her politics are a mess but I had a little bit of a crush on her when I was about 14.
Taylor Swift called out Soros for his shameless greed, but Swift herself is only 1/3 his age and at $365m not stopping anytime soon...
Princess Margaret told queen of Hollywood Liz Taylor that her big in your face diamonds were vulgar,.. Liz said why don't you try it on? -then said.. Im sure they don't appear so vulgar to you now.. 😂

Heard it mentioned already but Alison gets my vote for contemporary artists. This song blows my mind every time I hear it:
The lead singer of Cowboy Junkies is awesome as was Patsy Cline.
Can’t really imagine anyone as spectacularly gifted as Stevie tho:
Stevie’s not that talented. She only plays the tambourine. Alison, on my the other hand, is a master of several stringed instruments with a voice like an Angel. 🤠
Favorites are favorites for many differing reasons, and usually reflect something in the tastes - and often the needs - of the one choosing. Well be it.
Alison not only plays a few instruments well, but her voice is pure and she does not try to go beyond her natural range. She is a listener as well, and sings effectively with others - of several types. Alison's rendering of many, many touching and inspiring songs - not to mention the exciting - seems driven by a bunch of real-life experience and empathy. Certainly a favorite here.
Princess Margaret told queen of Hollywood Liz Taylor that her big in your face diamonds were vulgar,..
Irony...It's the other who is at fault.
I think Margaret was more jealous that Liz could find men like Burton to swoon over her and buy her a massive rock on top of it.. (I got it a bit wrong, it was actually Marg that asked to try it on) ..also it would not be kosher for a royal to regularly wear/flaunt such a stone even if she did own it.
Hollywood made british Liz a queen,.. so Marg rubbed shoulders with two Queen Elizabeths but always remained just the queens sister... .. sour grapes..
Krupp diamond 33 karat [GIA graded D/VS1] such weight/high grade make it one incredible rare stone.
Alison Krause sings The Boxer. I had never imagined this classic could sound well in the bluegrass idiom but Alison pulls it off with style. Plus plays the fiddle.
Bonnie Bishop Susan Tedeschi Patsy Cline Ann Wilson Linda Ronstandt
I saw Bonnie Bishop in a small venue in Bluffton SC about 2 years ago. It was a good show and after got to chat with her and some of her musicians. I enjoyed it. Still not my favorite, but I'd see her again if she played here in NY. She was easy on the eyes too.
I like Catherine Russell for when I feel like some jazz/blues. Also, her piano player, Mark Shane, is a real good friend of mine. We shoot skeet together. I have accompanied him on my cajon drum at some private parties. He's a real talent.
"I've been from Tucson to Tucumcari Tehachapi to Tonopah I've driven every kind of rig that's ever been made Driven the back roads, so I wouldn't get weighed...
And if you give me... Weed, whites, and wine And show me a sign, I'll be willin'....."
I drove the Big Rig over the road for 8 years. This is a song about truck driving and I love it. There is a beauty and a majesty about staying out on the road for weeks at a time and driving over the open roads and this song captures it. You have to do it for years, to understand it. I know, Linda never had a CDL but she is an artist and this is some great artistic expression.
I have driven the back roads so I wouldn't get weighed a dozen times. I always succeeded in dodging the scales, maybe I was lucky.
I will say, the open road of Interstate 20 west of Sweetwater Texas at 2 am, rolling west with the full moon shining on the white sands and the cactus of the desert, popping a 5 Hour Energy and smoking a Marlboro, that is a wonderful way to spend a few hours on God's Green Earth.
When I was in the Loves Truck Stop in Midland Texas for the night, out there on Interstate 20, stopped for a 10 hour break, at midnight, I might play this song four times in a row. Love this song.
Eva Cassidy sings Paul Simon. A great rendition of a classic "Kathy's Song." I never heard of Eva. I just looked her up. Died at age 33 from cancer. Damn.
The late Eva Cassidy had the most pure and expressive voice of any female vocalist I've ever heard.
Will double this.
"Autumn Leaves" by her is amazing. Link help someone?
Anyone that hears her voice and is not moved or get goosebumps has either no heart or skin, or, just doesn't really appreciate music. My circle of friends include many talented musicians/singers and not a one isn't blown away by her voice. We have such discussions fairly regularly.
Not to hijack this thread but IMO the absolute best male singer (not most popular or best entertainer, but best voice) of my (boomer) generation was Art Garfunkel. In his prime, he was sublime (rhyme not intended).
ps Actually, come to think of it, with the range of his voice he could be included as a favorite female vocalist.
Wow, color me impressed. She's got fantastic technique, amazing breath control, can sing for beauty AND power, sometimes at the same time. She's had a lot of classical training and it's paid off. And the band is NOT your usual three chord garage metal band. Really something special all around.

They are basically unheard of in the US. In Europe the headline stadiums. The band is from Finland, singer from Holland and the guy on the pipes and horns and other stuff from Scotland or Ireland (I forget).
Dolly is a great talent but she got carried away with the plastic surgery about ten years ago. I don't follow her and I hardly follow country music but Dolly pops up on tv all the time in movies and interviews and ads. I do live fairly close to Dollywood so they run a lot of Dollywood ads here in western NC. Can't avoid her.
About ten years she really got her face butchered by some bad plastic surgery. Lately she has gotten that somewhat repaired but she still looks like a freak.
Olivia Newton John Marie Fredriksson (Roxette) Nancy Wilson (under rated Heart sister)
In their prime, I would have never been able to choose between Ann and Nancy Wilson. I still fantasize about them today.
A group of us from 3rd plt. B 2/75 went to the Heart concert at the Seattle Coliseum on New Years Eve, 1978. Heart, Head East , I think and one other band. Nancy Wilson came out on stage in a flesh colored body suit. It was brutal, she was so Hot!

My affection for her vocals is in reference to her hay-day.
Regarding her plastic surgery . . . it's almost as if her and Kenny got a 2-for-1 deal from a hack
Now if you had said Kate Wolf, you would be getting somewhere. My band does this song of hers and our female singer does a great job on it. I seem to like female vocalists who died young from cancer. What's up with that?

Ann was not bad by any means. It would have been a tough choice!
Anne Wilson is a fat lib and her skinny sister on guitar is conservative.
I try not to listen to entertainers' politics, they over-rate their importance. And most of the time make themselves sound real stupid. The conservatives ones usually at least come across as having some common sense.
I’ve had the same favorite since the early 70’s, yes I’m a boomer. It’s unfortunate but she is probably a Libby but dont see her making an ass of herself in public, at least I haven’t. Someone here will probably prove me wrong though.
Like a vocalists like i like guitars and actors - with not just range but capable of varying styles and unique gifts, roaring and rumbling like a home garage built mopar.
Jewel makes me weak in the knees. Woman can go from folk to rock to jazz and skat to yodel and back again. Her attractiveness kind of pigeonholed her in her youth, unfortunately.
Honorable mention to Lisa Ekdahl singing in English with the Peter Nordahl Trio. The accent, yeah, but she has this wonderfully delicate, feminine voice. Heard her voice cutting thru the din over the PA in a Swedish train station late 90’s - “Who the F is that...?!?,” had to track it down.
She lays a liplock on Longmire in one of the novels. Made me a little jealous.
Haley Reinhart has a pretty good version on the Tube. Nice outfit too.
Have way too many I like to ever pick a favorite. Spend a lot of time listening to the little Korean cover artist J.Fla. Not the only one, as she has over 16 million followers, and billions with a “b” views. Has a little Stevie Nicks rasp with some Blossom Dearie mixed in.
I'd agree with many mentioned, but the best old country singer is not the best new country singer and the best pop/rock singer is not the best opera or broadway singer. Or vise versa in each case also.
