My Wife's purse was stolen out of her car. She's filed a police report, notified our banks, cancelled debit and credit cards, etc. She's looking at getting a 'hold' put on with the credit bureaus. What else do you guys recommend doing?
Posted By: Whitebird Re: Wife's Purse Stolen - 01/21/21
Make sure your garage door opener is not missing from the car as well.
Posted By: kenjs1 Re: Wife's Purse Stolen - 01/21/21
What about other door keys?

Thanks. Gate/garage opener still there. She thinks she had spare house keys in there so we'll get the locks changed as a precaution.

I recommend you tell her not to leave her purse in the car. Or if she does, to hide it, so it isn't a lure to a would-be thief.
Posted By: alwaysoutdoors Re: Wife's Purse Stolen - 01/21/21
Yes. Changing the door lock should be done quickly .
Posted By: Paul_M Re: Wife's Purse Stolen - 01/21/21
Any spare house key in the purse also?
You need to think about anything that could have been in there that can put you guys at risk.
I see everyone is thinking about keys also, locks changed pronto!

Get started on driver's license/ID replacement. Some areas are requiring appointments and booking can be full for months out.

Walk the neighboring roads for a few miles on both sides looking for throw out.

Don't go thru DMV for the DL. . Use a private Express place . Costs a few bucks more, but you should be in and out in less than an our, , depending on wait time there . Check ahead and have all your docs in Han. Took me 10 minutes- the second day - missing a doc.....

Be sure to get the nupgraded one for airline travel.

Put 3 or 4 purses in there and some misc jewelry.
Sit in a vehicle nearby with dark tinted windows and wait.

Thanks, gents.

Watch your credit agencies to ensure they do not open any new credit cards in her name. You might want to place a security freeze on them.

If you've seen the Deathwish movies, you know what to do.

In town, Post Office parking lot. They don't have any cameras in the parking area.

Our place is in the country, fenced and gated.

Probably wouldn't go well for them. My neighbors are all like-minded folk. smile

I suggest you impart the idea that valuables are not protected by automobile glass.

My wife had her purse stolen when she used to work at a restaurant - she was sick to her stomach and felt she had been violated.

I know how your wife feels, hope it works out.

Good grief. I usually leave the truck key in the ignition when at the PO.

It’s a Manuel trans, so I got that going for me.

Hate to hear that!

In Las Cruces, a relative of mine had the same thing happen. About a week later, they came and broke into their house and stole their car.

Keep vigilant!

Consider that the thieves know your address , hopefully they didn't get her keys .

You need to get Trunk Monkey for your wife's car.

Then she can leave her purse in the car without worry. grin

Females of the clan must be sloppy with purse security!

Now they have an address to consider for future activities.

To bad it is against the law to put out a bait car with nearby sniper.

To be gut shot with a 22 would likely get someone to consider other lines of enterprise.

I'd make her carry her chit in a plastic bag from the dollar store for a month before she could buy another set.
Posted By: JB in SC Re: Wife's Purse Stolen - 01/22/21
Get online and freeze her credit at all three agencies. That way no one can open new lines of credit in her name. Not the temporary freeze they do for 60 days either.

She can unfreeze it to get new credit and put a freeze back.

My daughter had her purse stolen in college, it took us six or seven months to get it straightened out. Got her a new drivers license number (ain’t easy) since an identity thief was using hers for writing fake checks for thousands of dollars. Thankfully our bank caught the first one. This happened months after the theft. An eye opening experience. These folks may sell the identity several times before it gets used. Insurance fraud, hospital bills, all sorts of other fraud might occur if you don’t get on it immediately.

Thanks, JB, that is very helpful.

Anytime...we learned a lot. Changing the DL took a call to my legislator, a personal friend. DMV said it couldn’t be done, he got the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division on it. It was funny how fast the DMV reacts to a call from SLED. She got it the next day,

My late father in law had Alzheimer’s and gave a phone scammer some personal information. We went through the same procedure with his identity theft. We didn’t find out he had given his info out until a scammer had a car insured in his name, it was a real mess.

We froze our credit years ago. Takes about five minutes to temporarily unfreeze it for new line of credit like a car loan, etc.

It doesn’t protect against credit card fraud using your CC number, but that’s a lot easier to remedy (and it’s the banks money).

I leave the Ram (also manual) running. Better for diesels.

But I do hide my purse.

I used to leave my little sweetheart Jules in the truck with the windows cracked a bit when going in the store for a few.

It was fun to park right in front of the entrance at comvenience stores or Dollar Generals. If i saw a person of color or a hispanic headed out the entrance while shopping id run up front and watch out the store front.

For some reason, they always jumped when walking by my truck but crackers didnt. Go figure. I know why the AAs play basket ball.

Man, I miss her.

That wasn't in her purse anywhere but we're still taking precautions.

They make little GPS tracking devices, would have helped if she had one hidden in her purse, they are inexpensive.

I never bothered telling the cops, the thief spends less than my wife grin
