TBI investigating after two bodies found at Reelfoot Lake in Obion County
Jan 25, 2021 OBION COUNTY, TN — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation confirms special agents are investigating the deaths of two people at Reelfoot Lake in Obion County.
TBI spokeswoman Keli McAlister says TBI agents are carrying out the death investigation at the request of District Attorney General Tommy Thomas, who serves Obion and Weakley counties in the 27th judicial circuit.
McAlister said she was limited in what details she could make public at this time, because the investigation is in the early stages.
Thunderbolt Radio, based in Martin, Tennessee, reports that the TBI agents were brought in to investigate a deadly shooting that happened Monday at the lake.
Thomas told the radio station the names of the two men killed in the shooting, which happened Monday morning, are Chance Black and Zach Grooms. Thomas told Thunderbolt that local investigators called the TBI in to help locate a person of interest in the case.
Rumor is two guys hopped in a private duck blind. Owner showed up after shooting light and killed both guys. Don't know if it's all true. TBI is investigating.

What a tragedy for the families of the 2 young men. 25 and 26 years old is way too young to meet such a violent end.
I don’t know the laws regarding duck hunting and blinds in TN but it wouldn’t surprise me if it had to do with territory and turf.
In Washington blinds on public land are first come first served irregardless of who built it. Blinds on private land are.....well....PRIVATE! Floating blinds with a WN # (ie a boat) are private property just like a vessel at anchor is private property.
Couple rednecks dead by a 70 yr old man over ducks. Ducks.... Sooooooo worth it......
Nothing to see here.. Typical Tn duck hunting conflict stuff down here . Rednecks think they can get away with schit all the time.
I wonder if they took a dump in the old mans bisquick biscuit stove ???
Mighta been the same ones that did that to Ruger from Tn deer at his duck blind on the Gooch yrs ago. LOL!!!
Wonder if they had a bulldogged truck with frogger tires and 2 pairs of dumb azz white framed sunglasses on the dash...
Oh well... Their parents wont have ta feed the adult man childs living at home anymore. And a couple of city jobs their daddys got em might open up somewhere. Maybe someone that goes to work insted of duck hunting on the clock might get a job now....
The same Ruger that never got his border collie spayed a d let every dog in the neighborhood screw it and just kept taking the pups down to the euthanasia chamber?
We kept a blind up for years on public water. Finally gave up and rigged a blind on the boat.Much less hassle, still have to deal with the occasional rude idiot who decides to fish in the decoy spread.
i'm not a waterfowl hunter but when i went with my BIL a couple times there was always conflict with placement, etc. rudest mf'ers i ever ran into hunting. sitting there getting shot rained on you all day takes the fun out of it.

People around here know what I'm saying.....
I was going to reserve judgement on this one.
But after learning the victim's names were Zach and Chance, I decided they probably had it coming.
read on another site that the shooter rode over to the blind in his boat and shot them after they were shooting at what he thought was his ducks. Supposedly a 3rd hunter was shot and survive and got the other two back to shore. Said they had had disputes before with him.
The young man named Chance Black was the son of Weakley County Chief Deputy Black, one of the good LEOs, plus he is a good friend of mine, not badge heavy or an azzhole. I have not talked to him yet, but will.
I cannot imagine the trauma and loss this senseless murder will render.
I personally do not like being around old people and firearms unless I really know them.
All their jiggle-billy shaky shît tremors and Prozac, giz zac and 20 other meds theyre on, then just being curmudgeonly and assy
Much less an unstable or crazy SOB
Old doofus at the 5-stand swept me with his barrel half a dozen times while ranting at Renegade50 over setting an open bolt, unloaded shot gun in the corner gun gun.

Wonder if old crazy guy had a previous beef with the family?
Boys were in their blind, they shot at ducks he thought were coming to work his spread. He motored over and killed them, there is a 60ish survivor in the blind as witness.. His wife had recently been diagnosed with a terminal illness and he had early onset dementia. Seems there was bad blood all season long, the young men wearing the ducks out, he not doing so well. He was out of big money, rich from family business and they were just kids.
Vowell's truck and boat trailer are still at the launch site, he is most likely dead in the water somewhere from self inflicted...

I'm not passing judgement on the older man. If I caught 2 young men on my private property hunting and they gave me grief and threatened me while armed what choice do you have? It's a shame you can't shoot armed trespassers - poachers on your own property.

Explains alot actually. Old man life long thinking his self perceived status from inherited family business entitles him to anything and everything in his little fiefdom mind.

The young men were in their own duck blind. The old man left his blind and came over to theirs and killed them. No private property issues.
Read the post from worriedman above. It’s almost verbatim of what an officer friend shared with me.
Does anyone know, FOR SURE, that no guns were pointed at the "old man"? Hence self defense? So far, the story line is all based on ONE witness who may or may not be truthful.

Sounds like the old man definitely instigated the conflict. But who knows if he wasn't actually threatened by the two young men with guns. As I've aged my give a damn for being threatened has decreased greatly.

I don’t know what it is about the lumberyard business but I have known two old guys that made their fortune that way and they were the biggest a-holes you could ever meet.

I witnessed two grown men level shotguns at each other over deer hounds not observing property boundaries. No shots fired that day. One came to the realization he was threatening the other man on his own property and was likely close to death. Decided to let it go, at least for that day. As far as I know they used to be friends but never spoke to each other afterwards. Amazing what some folks would do for a set of horns. Or ducks.
State game, fish agencies keep telling us hunter numbers are declining and we need to recruit more and take some one out hunting and fishing but it really it is all bullshit. What is declining is public access and places to go hunting and fishing as it gets more crowded out there more incidence like this will happen playing to left why we all should not have guns.
Had a guy climbing into boats on public water in eastern NC threatening to kill them over some ducks a while back. His mistake was he climbed into the boat of a game commisioner and the cousin of the Governor. Not sure what the outcome was but if he had tried that with our group he would likley have been eating some steel shot. Given his previous actions I'm surprised he didn't. Locals on the Core Sound can get like that as well...they spend a lot of money each year baiting ducks and don't appreciate dingbatters hunting "their" ducks. Sad what folks will do over a duck or deer, prayers to the young men's families. Unless they leveled firearms against the old codger and it wasn;t out of self defense, they didn't deserve that.
Happened upon to this on the refuge forums, post originally started a few weeks ago about what a cluster-F Reelfoot lake is with all the grandfathered in private blinds versus guys just setting up, 'territory' disputes, etc. Page 11 is where the shooting started. Prominent businessman that many on the refuge forum knew. As has been said above, kids were shooting swinging ducks that he thought were his, he motors over, shoots them. Of course, nobody really knows what went down.
and don't appreciate dingbatters hunting "their" ducks.
I've been vacationing on Ocracoke since the 70s, but my last trip was my last trip. Dingbatters own most of it now. I don't see how the true O'coakers tolerate them.
you have no idea how frigging true that statement is. for years I was one of the very few in our county that waterfowl hunted. when Duck Dynasty showed up every [bleep] kickin fuggtard with a beard became a duck hunter
Old folks are unhinged, to one degree or another. When your body degrades, your brain isn’t left out. People talk about some old boy being “sharp as a tack”. Bullschit. Sharp as a tack compared to some other 80 year old maybe, but that brain is already turning to mush
I wonder what the average age on the Q thread is? 😬

I’ve just stopped. It’s not worth the hassle. On the other hand, the deer woods are pretty much empty these days by the second week of the season. So, that’s a plus.

a few of us pony'd up and now havea private waterfol lease. ability to flood corn Back waters along the River etc. and 2 miles of river bottom corn field and sloughs.
I still hunt Public Big water but its openw ater setups fo diver, and I choose the coldest nasties friggin days to do it, cuts down on the wanna bes
A little off topic, story involves deer hunting. Years ago the neighbor and 14 yo son of a good friend of mine were deer hunting in the U.P. They somehow ended up on private land, no fence and unmarked. They ran into the landowner (who was drunk) who told them to GTF off of his land. Mike and his dad turned around and started to walk away. Mike was a cocky little teenager and unarmed. He turned back towards the landowner probably to say something smartazz, the old geezer shot him through the side shattering his spine, lacerating his liver and destroying a kidney. Mike's dad spun around and put five rounds from his 740 into the old geezer. Mike was medivaced out of Kincheleo AFB down to Ann Arbor and survived spending the rest of his life paralyzed from the waist down. His dad was never charged.

There are often consequences for being so macho as to not take any tshidt off anyone, as well as for completely blowing an insult/intrusion out of proportion. In this instance the chickens came home to roost in both cases. Perhaps another example of natural selection playing out.
Tragic deal for all concerned on the duck blind thing, dunno what transpired or words spoken leading up to it other than what was stated here.
I been staying on it waiting for a update. Everything points at it being a long term dispute, it wasn't the first rodeo for these guys with this old man.
I'm just curious of where they might find the guy. Reelfoot Lake is huge with dense stands of cypress and vast swamp land. The old dude could be anywhere and really tuff to locate dead or alive. He was a lifer there and probably knows the area well.
I'd say this post might be fairly accurate...

Public water go sketchy at best, and sometimes you spent your time worrying about the safety of others. Good buddy had to go out and rescue 3 idiots loaded down in a 14ft john boat on big water, didn't make it 100 yards before they took on water. Luckily they all survived.
And then those kids with rich parents hooking them up with 100 grand between a truck and boat, all decked out in the nicest gear. Not a class envy thing but I hope most of those kids really appreciate how good they have it. I certainly took pride in each time I was able to afford something a little nicer and graduate to better stuff along my hunting career. The days of handme downs and rocky/walls clothing are long gone, but I swear that was when I was having my most fun.
Ive been as a guest on Reelfoot in private blinds by a college classmate. The stories he told me about not screwing around with another group's blind were memorable but not surprising. You just do not screw around with another man's blind on Reelfoot. Period They would probably rather you took their wife for a night .
I've hunted Reelfoot a couple of times, they have a bunch of different rules with blinds. They set up a system where private previously known blinds were registered to one owner, when they die, that blind goes into the yearly state draw. I heard grandparents were registering blinds in their grandchildren's name to keep it in the family as long as they could. The State owned blinds go into a lottery every year. The rule is, you have the right to your private or state draw everyday of the season, if the blind is unoccupied at sun up, it's an open blind for that day, this is what might have happened. No one in blind at sun up, three guys get in it, old owner comes by to go hunting but is late, tells the three guys to get out, they don't and the shooting starts.
Blinds are at least a 1/4 mile away from each other, hard to say if ducks were going to one blind or the other. One time, we must of had 10 or 12 flocks of mallards circle out blind, not like the set up or the guides calling and go due west to the next blind and come in. That blind had 7 guys limit by 11:30AM and leave, just the way it goes. Once we were at the launch and a local couldn't get his 4-stroke started and the line started backing up, my buddy from New Jersey jumped in the boat and got it started, we saw those hunters at the restaurant that night and they tried to buy us diner, we already paid for it. I heard there were fist fights over blinds, it's sad that two young men had to lose their lives over a blind.
For what it's worth, some of these blinds are pretty elaborate, electrical hook ups for motion decoys, pretty nice stoves, If I put they much time and money in a blind, I would be hunting it or have good friends out there hunting it.

From the info on the Refuge Forums, it was a public draw blind that used to be private.

i have a 24 foot diver boat. i run a big diver spread when the conditions are right. I even have a layout boat. i get its public water but have some morlas and ethics, i completely get the guy being mad about guys wearing ducks out every day of the season. but aint much you can do about it. what relly pisses me off is when guys set their spread 100 ayrds from me, or better yet are the damned fishermen.
hell 2 years ago we set up off of a point. about an hour after daylight here comes this kid in a 12 foot car topper and an outboard, no heavy coat or life jacket on. its january and 3 degrees out. scumbag drives right through my Bluebil long Lines.
I remember first time I watched someone fishing in our spread...they guy I was with was used to it, when big tournament money is on the line, a decoy or duck hunter isn't gonna stop them.

Investigators find boat of man accused of killing two people at Reelfoot Lake
OBION COUNTY, TN — The Obion and Weakley County District Attorney Tommy Thomas tells Local 6 the boat of David Vowell was found by investigators Tuesday.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says they are still looking for 70 year old Vowell, of Martin, Tenn., — who is considered armed and dangerous.
Law enforcement has blocked off the road which leads to where the two bodies were found. The TBI says they're not releasing any new information on the two victims or the suspect.
Two dead and only one alive to tell the story. A 70 year old comes up to 2 armed and trespassing men and it goes south. I strongly doubt it was premediated and suspect emotions were high and someone went for a weapon when they shouldn't have.
I bet the background story is a lot more complicated than it sounds. When things like this occur, something has usually been festering for quite a while.

Where do you get tresspassing? I've read on here, on other forums, and news articles, and none of them say anything about the two victims were tresspassing.
Being a connected man of means, he may have cooled off a bit then called his lawyer. He could easily be out of the area somewhere evaluating his situation and getting his affairs in order.
Be my guess it ain't over ducks it was a case perceived rights and trespass on those rights. You try taking something from someone that has had them for years and believes they belong to him you better be ready to fight, those young guys underestimated that old boys' desire to keep what he thought was his my guess. Mb

I've heard it said before, never F~ck with an old man , he has seen much , heard more, and "life with out parole isn't much of a deterrent !
And I can hear the two kids yelling back at him, "Hey f~ck off and die old man" .
This wasn't over ducks at all, it was just a total lack of decency, by two bunches of people that had more hate for each other, than eithers love of life itself.
I can't see him leaving the country. A 70 year old guy, probably born in Tennessee. I don't think he would be happy in some foreign country. Besides, he gets indicted for first degree murder, most countries would ship him back, to face the music. I believe Ireland does not have an extradition treaty but most countries do.
Fascinating thread, this is one of the reasons I am on this forum, a hunting disaster news story that would not make the news around here.

Must be true then
To further expound, from guys that have hunted out of the blind that the 2 guys were killed in, even naming it by name, that the shooting victims were not in the shooters blind. That the shooter had his own, different blind, next to theirs. But yes, I read it on the internet, so it must be true. Or not. Almost as true as the tresspassing, that wasn't. Maybe.
I hunted Ducks once.. I would shoot you if you tried to make me do it again... and not worry about being arrested. at 83 jail time dosen't scare me anymore.. but I might shoot you anyway..

History of terrorism rests in waters of Reelfoot Lake
The next time you go fishing or boating, you might contemplate this fact: Use of a lake was once the cause of a violent chapter in Tennessee history.
It happened more than a century ago, on what was (at that time) Tennessee’s only major lake. Reelfoot Lake, in northwest Tennessee, was formed by the New Madrid Earthquakes of 1811-1812. As a result of those earthquakes, water overflowed the banks of the Mississippi River and inundated present-day Lake and Obion counties. Much of that water eventually receded, but a lot of it stayed, forming a body of water that is about 23 square miles in size but whose average depth is only about 5½ feet deep.
Settlers began moving into northwest Tennessee after the Chickasaw Indians were forced out in 1818. Many of these settlers found they could make a good living as fishermen.
However, in 1908 a company called the West Tennessee Land Co. bought Reelfoot Lake’s shoreline and declared its intention to close the lake to fishing.
The people who made their living fishing felt threatened. One of them, Tom Johnson of the Obion County community of Hornbeak, was quoted by the Union City newspaper as saying:
“(God) saw that we couldn’t make a livin’ farmin’, so he ordered an earthquake, an’ the earthquake left a big hole. Next he filled the hole with watah an’ put fish in it. Then he knew we could make a livin’ between farmin’ and fishin’. But along comes these rich men who don’t have to make no livin’, an’ they tell us all that we must not fish in the lake any mo’, ’cause they owns the lake an’ the fish God put theah foh us. It jus’ naturally ain’t right, strange; it ain’t no justice.’”
At the time, there was a nationally publicized rebellion in southern Kentucky going on between tobacco farmers and the American Tobacco Co. As part of that rebellion, many tobacco farmers donned black sheets and began making night attacks on tobacco company property as well as on farmers who were siding with it. They became known as “nightriders,” and although they were probably inspired by the original Ku Klux Klan and its methods, they were not officially connected to it.
Many of the fishermen and their friends began making “nightrider”-type raids of their own against the West Tennessee Land Co. The wave of terrorism went on for about seven months and, as so often happens with lawlessness and terrorism, soon became an instrument of vengeance against people who may have had nothing to do with the West Tennessee Land Co. Crops were burned, docks were burned, men and women were taken from their homes and beaten.
In one case, nightriders dragged a woman named Emma Johnson out of her bed and away from her 2-year-old baby. Why? Because she had sued her husband (one of the nightriders) for divorce.
The nightriders also randomly turned their anger toward African Americans, or toward young men who refused to join their number.
The trouble peaked on Oct. 19, 1908, when Quenton Rankin and R.G. Taylor, two attorneys associated with the land company, were taken from a hotel in the community known as Walnut Log. Rankin was hanged from a tree and shot. Taylor escaped into the swamp amid a storm of bullets and was presumed dead. He survived by hiding under a cypress log for 24 hours.
Tennessee Gov. Malcolm Patterson called out the Tennessee National Guard. Working together with law enforcement officials from several states as well as hundreds of volunteers, they rounded up about 50 suspects. In January 1909, a jury found eight of them guilty and handed six of the eight the death sentence. The verdicts and the sentences were, at the time, hailed as a triumph of law and order, since the attorney general, judge and jury were all reportedly receiving threats during the trial.
“The conviction of these men,” said the Memphis Commercial Appeal, “marks the turning point of nightriderism toward its decline.”
However, the Tennessee Supreme Court overturned all of the convictions because of the way the judge chose members of the jury. They were later retried, but none of them ever did prison time for the murder of Quenton Rankin or for all the other acts of terrorism.
In 1914, Tennessee purchased Reelfoot Lake and much of its shoreline. A law was passed declaring the lake public domain, which means people can fish there, regardless of who owns the land around it.

Yeah well this ended up with 2 dead young men so "local law" won't apply. Feds will be called in to handle this. Rumor is the old man shot the first guy who was going to get a duck, 2nd guy comes out of the blind and gets shot. Old man thought there were only 2 and guy 3 hits him witha paddle knocking him out.

Interesting! I’ve spent quite a bit of time around Reelfoot Lake, and have never heard that story.

People are scared to do the wrong thing out there disrespecting someone else. And it’s NOT because of the TWRA .lol Duck hunting is a way of life and a lot of the local’s way of making a living. Please go ahead and tell us more what you read online though
I read two dead. One survived. And the boat of the alleged shooter has been found. And the alleged shooters truck and boat trailer, were at the boat ramp! Authorities not saying anything, investigating the crime! What did I miss, other than wild ass guesses by drama queens!
Was just down there two weeks ago. Stayed in an Air BnB right on Reelfoot Lake. Fortunately, hunted from a private blind on private land/water just north, on the KY side of the line. Ducks are a big deal down that way.

It's somewhat redundant of the video I posted earlier in the thread. A little history lesson is good filler. Gotta keep it interesting while awaiting more details.

I'm well versed in the screwed up sense of entitlement when it comes to ownership of public waters. No different than those in Currituck or the Core Sound here. TN doesn't have the market cornered on a$$hole duck hunters. Local law and customs got this 70 year old $hithead way in over his head and two young men are no longer here. I don't give a rat's a$$ about customs and local law, no excuse for anything like this to take place...not that you are condoning it either. Just a screwed up mess for no real reason.
My opinion,...duck hunting doesn't create any more conflict than many other activities you can name. It's just that duck hunting is typically done with 12 gauge shotguns.
People who get in a quarrel over a game of badminton get spanked about the head and shoulders with a badminton racket.
People who get in a quarrel over duck hunting shoot the fug out of each other with 12 gauge shotguns.
Community mourns hunters killed at Reelfoot Lake, person of interest still at large January 26, 2021
UPDATE (4:30 p.m. 1/26/21): The TBI has announced that David Vowell is now wanted on two counts of first-degree murder.
OBION COUNTY, Tenn. — Northwest Tennessee is mourning the lives of Chance Black(right) and Zachary Grooms(left)
“It’s been tough to process. It’s brought a lot of hurt and confusion that we’re all learning to navigate,” said Seth Dortch, marketing manager for Final Flight Outfitters, Inc.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says they were killed Monday morning at Reelfoot Lake.
A friend says 25-year-old Zachary Grooms just graduated from Bethel University, with aspirations to become a police officer.
26-year-old Chance Black was also aspiring to join law enforcement as a state trooper. He worked at Final Flight Outfitters in Union City.
“They were very well respected, very well admired from their peers,” Dortch said. “Chance worked for us full-time for Final Flight Outfitters, and what an honor it was for us to have him on our team.”
Reelfoot Lake is a well-known hunting area, and both Grooms and Black were sportsmen.
“There’s a process there to take it all in, to mourn, to help build each other up, to strengthen each other, and for us as outdoorsmen, we have a lot to learn from it,” Dortch said.
Law enforcement was still on the scene Tuesday morning.
Dortch says now, the hunting community and northwest Tennessee are relying on their faith to get through this tragedy.
The TBI is still looking for 70-year-old David Vowell of Martin. They say to consider him armed and dangerous, and if you see him, call 1-800-TBI-FIND.
The TBI has still not released a cause of death or motive in the homicide investigation.
I off road motorcycle ride and we run into this type of problem several times a year. It is always someone in a ranger pickup with a halve bottle of whiskey between their legs and a gun in the truck. The club has a dozen or more police officers in it. We have arrested a few of the drunks. The trail routes cover up to a 150 miles. We see bear and coon hunters running dogs all the time. Never had a problem with any of them in 25 years. I would submit that this isn't a hunting problem.

David Vowell
Photo courtesy of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation OBION COUNTY, TN — Friends of a Martin, Tennessee, man wanted on murder charges stemming from the shooting deaths of two men killed Monday described him as mild mannered and easy going.
David Vowell is charged with the murder of 26-year-old Chance Black and 25-year-old Zachery Grooms, who were both from Weakley County. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation filed arrest warrants for the 70-year-old man for killing the two men at Reelfoot Lake in Obion County, Tennessee, Monday morning.
District Attorney General Tommy Thomas, who serves Tennessee's 27th judicial district, said investigators found a boat belonging to Vowell Tuesday. They also towed away a vehicle belonging to Vowell at the Blue Basin Cove Lodge on Reelfoot Lake. "I know his family," Thomas said "We're satisfied he has no kill criminal history, but of course that's really irrelevant as far as where we are at this point."
Lodge owner Jerry Jones Jr. said you could find Vowell's boat docked at the lodge almost every day. Jones has known Vowell for more than 40 years. "It is confusing," Jones said. "I wasn't out there. All I know are the rumors of what happened. You know, it's still hard to believe that this kind of stuff could happen."
State and local law enforcement officers have been searching for Vowell since Monday. Jones said the crime Vowell's accused of doesn't sound like the man he knows. "In my head and my soul, I believe he’s a good fella. I don’t know what happened," Jones said.
Thomas said investigators told him Vowell approached the boat of the two victims, and an argument started. The two men were out duck hunting on the lake with a third man named Jeffery Crabtree, who witnessed the shooting. Thomas said Crabtree took the gun away from Vowell, and then took the victims for help.
Jones said he never saw Vowell return to his vehicle or dock his boat. He also didn't hear the shooting.
"He's the kind of person who would pick up any kid on the side of the road and take them hunting," Jones said about Vowell. "Those juvenile hunts, he'd have a whole boatload of children that he takes out there hunting."
If you have never owned land , then .let your mouth runnnnn,,,
Just curious, but are you saying that you believe that a land owner has the right to kill people who are trespassing on private property?
Land owners should have the right to kill armed trespassers on private property. I've caught a few armed poachers years ago on our property. Now I just chase them and as long as they run off everything is good. I'd never shoot someone in the back, frontal shots only. What would you do if someone faced you off, on your property with a gun?
I went duck hunting there in 2004. It's also one of the best crappie lakes in the country. I'm gonna hold my opinion until all of the details are released.
We see bear and coon hunters running dogs all the time. Never had a problem with any of them in 25 years. I would submit that this isn't a hunting problem.

Just yesterday, the neighbors' dog from across the street was having a wonderful time flying about in the new snow. He came across and was blithely cavorting about in our yard, followed by one of the kids trying to get him back home. I let it pass. (Please see first signature line.)
They got the old guy's boat and car. No way a 70 year old rich guy is holed up in the woods. Furthermore this seems like a spontaneous event, not pre planned, so I doubt he arrived in Switzerland yesterday with a fake passport and $200 grand in a Swiss bank account.
He might be holed up in an abandoned cabin near by. You know TBI is searching abandoned or empty cabins with all available officers. Or else, he is holed up at a friend's house. He is the Most Wanted Man in the state so such a friend would be risking substantial jail time.

Good post.
When we cross paths with the Bear hunters we wi-fi a GPS track log of dog sightings on the trail. The hunters almost expect it now.
I'm not for shooting trespassers, even armed ones unless I feel they're a threat. Near as I can tell - trespassing isn't at play here.
It's generally different based upon where you grew up. Guys out west seem to think it's okay to be on land, so long as it wasn't posted. Where I am - posting or not, unless you own it or have permission from the guy who does - you don't go on it. Ever. Posting means ZERO. I don't hang a sign on my car saying "don't steal it" - you just know - you don't steal cars. Same with land use around here.

I back off, call the sheriff, and press charges. Hardly a year goes by that I don't end up in court over trespassing. I also always ask for a protection order against the trespassers if they are carrying firearms.
I cut down and cut up an average of five tree stands each year after I call the sheriff and they send a deputy to document the trespassing. I've even had people call me and complain that I tore down their stand without giving them the opportunity to remove it. I tell them that if their name and telephone number had been on the stand, I would have called them after I called the sheriff to report the trespassing.
The most annoying problem that I've had with trespassers was on a farm that we bought and the previous owners seemed to think that they had retained the right to give permission to their family and friends to hunt on "their" farm. OTOH when my Wife and BIL sold their family's ranch in CO, they wrote language into the terms of the sale so that they and their descendants would retain the right to trespass on that ranch in perpetuity, as long as the owner of record is given 24 hours advanced notice.
Search halted for double murder suspect at Reelfoot Lake
Jan 27, 2021 Updated 40 min ago OBION COUNTY, TN - District Attorney General Tommy Thomas says the search for double murder suspect David Vowell has been temporarily called off.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has filed arrest warrants for 70-year-old Vowell for killing two men at Reelfoot Lake in Obion County, Tennessee Monday morning.
Thomas said investigators told him Vowell approached the boat of the two victims, 26-year-old Chance Black and 25-year-old Zachery Grooms, both of Weakley County, and an argument started. The two men were duck hunting on the lake with a third man named Jeffery Crabtree, who witnessed the shooting. Thomas said Crabtree took the gun away from Vowell, and then took the victims for help.
Crews have been searching for Vowell for two days now. Thomas says recent rain has caused the water on Reelfoot Lake to rise. He says crews believe Vowell is no longer in the water. They believe Vowell either died from exposure or was helped from the water.
Thomas says he still does not have a motive for the shooting.
We're told the search will resume for Vowell once the water recedes.
I’m interested in the Crabtree taking the gun away part.
Did the old man relinquish it or was there a struggle? Did Crabtree kill and sink the old guy?
There is just something about his story that doesn't sound 100% right. However, strange things happen, and this will probably be a case where the whole story will never be known.

I bet they already know what happened. It wouldn't surprise me if Crabtree shot the guy and the local officials are playing it down,....figuring that justice has been served.

I've read a lot more on this that I've posted, trying to stick with what appears to be facts.
Nothing in this news story that I hadn't already read about other than them halting the search.
I looked up the Crabtree guy last night, couldn't confirm who I suspect is him but if its who I think it is, he's a big badazzed mf'er about the same age as the other two boys.
Not sure why they been keeping his part of the story on the down low, who know's, could be anything.
I try to keep from posting anything that doesn't hit the TBI Twitter site first, then I just pick out the most well written news story that is fact based.
My photos are a sham, the one of the chick standing in high water I got form a quick image search on "reelfoot high water" it's not related to the search at all. Just added it for your viewing enjoyment....more fake news lol.....

Got my vote. Public resource locked up by private parties. These two blinds in question were public draw blinds however from what I have read posted by locals on the Refuge. If this isn't a reason to eliminate some of these blinds that are too close, then it will never happen. Hope they find the old man with a grapple although it does nothing to bring those young men back.

He is speaking of NC and similar blinds there in Currituck Sound, Dare County and the Core Sound. Private blinds on public water and im not talking shore blinds, these are stake blinds every 500 yards as thats as close as you can put them due to the "safe hunter" law. Nothing more than a good ol boy way of keeping the taxpayers from out of town from hunting their ducks.
Crabtree said the three went to hunt around 6 a.m. Around 9, a boat approached the blind with David Vowell inside. He approached and asked if he could hunt out of the blind, and they said yes.
Crabtree said Vowell was in the process of getting out of his boat, and Crabtree thought it odd that Vowell was loading his gun, because normally you don’t load your gun until you get to your hunting position.
According to Thomas, Crabtree said he turned around and heard a gunshot. He saw Zach Grooms was shot in the chest with a shotgun and shortly after that, Chance Black was shot in the side.
Crabtree managed to wrestle the gun away from Vowell, then threw the gun in the water and knocked Vowell out of the boat he was in.
Crabtree then took off to shore to get help and last saw Vowell standing in waist-deep water.
Vowell is still considered armed and dangerous. If you have any information on his whereabouts, you are asked to call the Tennessee Bureau of investigation at 1-800-TBI-FIND.

New details emerge in Reelfoot Lake double homicide investigation January 27, 2021 Clint Eiland OBION COUNTY, Tenn. — New details have emerged in an investigation into the shooting deaths of two hunters on Reelfoot Lake earlier this week. “One of the first things we look for is a motive. Here, we don’t have a motive. We don’t see a motive,” District Attorney Tommy Thomas said.
Three men were in the duck blind on Reelfoot Lake that morning. Thomas says now, investigators are getting a clearer picture of what happened.
Thomas says investigators believe 70-year-old David Vowell approached the blind around 9 a.m., asking if he could hunt in the blind.
The men said yes, but something was off.
“Approximately 9:00, a boat approaches their blind, and that was the suspect, David Vowell. Mr. Vowell asked them if he could hunt out of that blind. They said yes. He started getting his gear together. A few seconds after that, the gun went off, and Mr. Grooms was shot,” Thomas said. “Just a few seconds after he arrived and asked if he could use the blind, and they said yes, and that’s when the survivor noticed him loading his gun, turned around and heard the gunshot, and he thought it was an accident.”
The survivor went to help the injured friend, Zachary Grooms, and that’s when Thomas says Vowell allegedly grabbed another gun and shot Chance Black. That’s when the surviving victim charged Vowell, pushing him into the water.
“He grabbed the gun away from Vowell. Hit him with it, knocked him out of the boat, and then he took off with the two injured friends in the boat,” Thomas said.
Investigators believe Vowell was able to get up and leave the scene.
“The water at that place was shallow, around waist deep. He turned around, and saw that the suspect was in the water. He had gotten up out of the water and was walking towards the bank,” Thomas said.
The weather has thrown a wrench into the search, which has been called off due to rising floodwaters.
“It’s rained a lot, and the water has risen, so now the search has been called off,” Thomas said.
Multiple agencies were involved in the search, but they still plan to patrol the area.
Thomas says it would have been hard for Vowell to leave the refuge without being seen, and the more time passes, the less they expect to find him alive.
“There’s no good way out of there. It’s a huge wilderness area. We’re convinced either someone assisted him in leaving the area, or he’s still in the area. If hes still in the area, he’s more than likely not alive,” Thomas said.
This is the classic boomer story. Greedy old timer steals the future from two young fellas that didn't do anything to the boomer.....welcome to Amerika.

I don’t believe he ask to hunt , I heard today they had been at odds since duck season started on the lake . Just not adding up
I'm a little reluctant to copy and post this, but I have been reading this thread since the story came out. This was copied from Arkansas hunting.net . I have no idea of the validity of the story. It is my understanding that if you "draw" a blind and are not in it at "shooting light" , that blind is available to whoever first come, first serve. This kind of sounds what may have happened.
"I read on another forum (only take as valid as it was said there to be valid) that it was said the ones shot and the shooter had a conflict about who was going to hunt the blind that morning. Per what was said, the older man was said to have had the draw to hunt the blind, but had not used it in a few days and was on his way to get in it to hunt right before shooting time, the victims, per what was said (again on repeating what was said) had been hunting the blind because the old man had not been using it, they were going to get in it again but saw the old man going to it, they then raced around the old man & got to the blind just as it was about to get to be shooting hours, claiming the blind away from the old man, who by the rules set up still had rights to the blind. As was said, an argument ensued, things must have went south, 1 old man vs several young guys. We know how it ended. I would expect (if info correct) the young guys never had their guns even out of their cases yet, while the old man, already mad & expecting a fight had his out & ready, might explain how it came to be. It's a sad & terrible deal, lose of life over a duck is hard to even comprehend, and it is just dumbfounding that it has gotten to this point now. Sad, Sad!!!!"

Totally conflicts with the bad blood specualation stuff leading up to it.
Let the old guy you been arguing with for who knows how long into your blind to hunt.
Conflicts with the pass shooting /cock blocking ducks going to the old man in his blind specualations also.
Lots of contradictions even in what has been released " offically"
Some good ole boy schitt probably going on with what really happened.

Bullshit. Like someone else here said - there's more to the story. Vowell likely approached the blind, Crabtree's crowd told him to eff off, so Vowell began shooting.

I’ve been reading about it since it happened. Lots of stuff has been posted on other forums. Mainly speculation, so I’ll hold my opinions until more facts are revealed. Weird story, but I’m not buying the old man “walked out” of the lake.

Walked out? Doubtful, that's what cell phones are for.
I've read this last part of the story posted here told many ways, not sure what, if any part of it is true.
At best it has been Crabtree telling his story to a TBI detectice that has retold it to District Attorney Tommy Thomas, then Thomas supposedly re-telling it to a reporter then the reporter spinning what he believes he was told into a printable story.
Sooooo, lots of room there for errors and enhancements. The stories scream of local rumor being spun in with a couple facts.
For those that want to speculate, I'll throw you some bones.
TBI Has had Walnut Logging RD. Off 157 Closed for days while they work on this investigation.
Walnut Logging RD chases along the shore of the Upper Blue Basin section of Reelfoot Lake and ends at a boat ramp right where the Buzzard Slough section of Reelfoot Lake begins.
Vowell docked his boat almost every day at Blue Basin Cove Lodge. The Lodge owner, Jerry Jones Jr. has been interviewed multiple times, says he's known Vowell for 40 years. All he's saying is that on the day of the murders Vowell put in and never came back. His lodge is where they towed Vowells truck and trailer away from.
Blue Basin Cove Lodge is on the opposite shore of Upper Blue Basin that Walnut Logging RD. is on.
Not one story has said where Vowell's boat was found other that "the lake". Nosed into shore some where? Adrift? Idunno.
When authorities got to the scene of the murders Vowell was no longer there.
Yep. I was thinking the same thing. I’m not so sure about Crabtree.
Oh come on...
If that were the case Jeffrey Delane Crabtree might show up on a Tennessee Department of Corrections search lookin' like a big badazz and be on probation right now with restrictions of being around guns. But like Slumlord says, "Crabtree is a common name in them parts".
From what I've seen some of those duck blinds are super nice, some even have kitchens and beds in them.
Walked out? Doubtful, that's what cell phones are for.
Sometimes when people are pushed into the water their cell phones get wet and don't work.
It would seem to me that if the old man is alive and hasn't made his presence known, that he has something to hide. Beyond that, I am not going to speculate.

It's a long thread, and as has happened here a lot lately, it went South pretty quick.
???? So basically the young ones out boat raced the old man to the blind. Old guy got pissed, got their and whacked em
Crabtree,s story got some holes in it . If any of this is true.
Ducks....... Sooooooo worth it......
You wouldn’t understand. It’s a heck of a lot more fun than a deer drive through Slums backyard.
You kinda act like a bleeder at times.

After all you are " Bob" the long time lurker then member outta the blue sockpuppet who knows so much about so many . Yet no one knows you.... LOL!!! Even though I have posted speculations and many others have also who you are.
It's almost queer like with you " Bob". Be brave. Just leap outta that closet and do the big reveal on who you really are on the inside. Dont surpress it any more " Bob". Leap outta that closet man.

Jitterbug phones probably aint designed to be very waterproof either. Probably tested to bathtub warm water conditions. The "opps oh my I dropped my phone in the tub lab test"

Most wise men that spend much time on the water keep their cell phones and wallets in watertight bags or boxes.
That's true. I am not on the water but when I go for a walk in the mountains with the dog, if it looks like rain, I put my phone in a quart Ziploc bag. If you took a dunking in waist deep water that ziploc bag would certainly protect the phone for the minute or two it was under water.
I dunno. A Ziploc might be too complex for a boomer. Proly just wrapped in layers of Saran-wrap.
Most Boomers can't manipulate their indexes well enough to get Saran Wrap peeling from the roll, and those new-fangled zipper baggy things, well.........

Common sense becomes irrelevant once the Alzheimer's takes over. We watched the MIL and a favorite Uncle go that way. They become very unpredictable and prone to anger. The MIL got quite violent the last couple years.
An older coworker was afflicted by Alzheimer's in his 70s. His wife was taking care of him at home, until the day he got out the shotgun and killed her. A half hour later, he did not know what had happened.
They did not even have a trial. They just put the old codger into a care facility.
Any body who spends a lot of time on the water has already lost a cell phone or got one wet . You learn real quick to put your phone in a waterproof bag . Heck even a lot of hunting coats have waterproof pockets .

Had a family member w brain age problem. Looking back, there were some odd things done years before the noticeable decline. Like a "crack" would appear and go "away". Just chit you would never do or say. 10 to 15 yrs before the going over the edge.

What a fugging idiot. Who in the Hell do you think has been paying 13% of our wage package into Social Security for the last 48 fugging years and keeping the God Damned thing solvent.

Some of us boomers are still drawing really nice paychecks from jobs companies need us to do because children can't, will not, or just not enough gas in the tank, a lack of sufficient grey matter maybe, but mostly experience in fugging back when others fugg with us, whilst sucking on the SS system we have been paying in the Max for for say, 51 years as in my case.
Gotta feeling that we ain't hearing the whole story. First details were that the old man came motoring over from one blind to the boy's blind pizzed off that they were shooting ducks over his spread. Last couple reports, the sole witness said that the old man came over wanting to hunt out of the same blind. Also said that the old man "walked to shore" after getting dumped in the lake by the sole witness after shooting the boys..
We had one of our guys take a tumble out of the boat into 35*F water a few years back changing the rigging on the blind. Young farm boy, 25 years old. +6ft tall, 200 pounds. He didn't feel like going ANYWHERE after he got back in the blind, even after we all stripped off clothes, got him dried off and back in some dry duds. I can't imagine a 70 year old man taking a tumble into 35*F water and doing much of anything except call for some dry duds, or dying right on the spot...
Something ain't right. Reminds me of the old saying "4 people can keep a secret if three of them are dead..."
Geno, I imagine the Paul Harvey version may come out when the old man is either found or arrested.
If he's found alive and arrested it will be interesting to hear his side of the story for sure.
If his body is found, soon enough that decomposition hasn't ruined any evidence, it will be interesting to see if he may have had his head held under water.

Do any of you believe that the dude that made those little sticks that you pushed into a friends Marlboro reds , that exploded on your second hit had any thing to do with the seeds in your trash stash , destroying a perfectly rolled joint?
Crabtree had previously never had a run in with the old man . They wanted to make a video and Crabtree was the camera man . His first time to the blind .

TOP STORY Search resumes for David Vowell, man accused of double murder at Reelfoot Lake Leanne Fuller Jan 29, 2021 Updated 1 hr ago David Vowell OBION COUNTY, TN — Crews resumed their search of Reelfoot Lake in Obion County, Tennessee, Friday — looking for the man accused of shooting and killing two men in their 20s on Monday.
The district attorney general said the search for David Vowell was suspended Wednesday because of high water at the lake.
Investigators told Local 6 Vowell approached Chance Black, Zach Grooms and another man who was hunting with them on Monday. Then, an argument started.
The third man, Jeffery Crabtree, witnessed the shooting. The district attorney general said Crabtree took the gun away from Vowell, and took the victims for help.
Crews have been searching for Vowell ever since.
We're told crews believe Vowell is not in the water, but either died from exposure or was helped from the water.
A memorial account has been established for the victims' families. All money donated will be divided equally between the families of Grooms and Black. You can drop off your donations at Greenfield Banking Company in Weakley County, Tennessee, or send your donation to P.O. Box 47 Greenfield, Tennessee, 38230.
There is always two sides to a story. Could be these young guys had been harassing him and he snapped. Doesn't sound like he had much happiness in his life. His duck hunting may have been the only thing going for him. These guys may have even threatened him. We'll likely never know.
There's a big update that was done via FB live that states the Crabtree guy's story checks out. Old man motors over to the blind blocking the other boat in, leaves his boat running, loads his gun and walks in and shoots one. Then he turns the gun on the other and shoots him in the side. The 3rd shell jammed at which time Crabtree takes it from him and hits him with the gun knockong the old man in the water. Crabtree then loads their boat up with the two victims and calls for help heading to land. Vowell's boat was found 200 yards from the blind still running. Basically this was released becuase there were folks saying Crabtree was a triple murderer which infuriated the DA since Crabtree was a surviving hero.
Something caused the old man to snap. Onset of early dementia possibly? Tragic story regardless.
I have been saying on this forum for years, based on 14 ambulance calls I ran as a paramedic, that at close range, nothing is more lethal than birdshot. I worked 14 of these cases, torso shots, and every one went to the morgue.
An old demented guy approaches 3 armed men.......much younger than him.......and kills two of them without being shot himself.
After seeing his two innocent buds killed, third armed-guy decides to forego using his own weapon......deciding instead to go hand-to-gun combat against an irrational old man.
After winning, against all reasonable odds........lucky survivor takes Mr.Dementia's gun........then lets the murderer freely wade to shore.
Yea, sure.
Whole story probably sounds great......to a Sheriff Bullard.
They set the whole thing up. They had a cloaked blind and were using phased shotguns. They was tired of both parties wearing out the ducks on both sides of em and not getting shots. They did a mind scrambler on crabtree which was easier than normal. Took the old man's body back to the underwater base beneath reelfoot lake for alien lizard dog pet food.
This whole thing will be a really good episode on unsolved mysteries in 5 or 6 yrs.

As good an explanation as any, got the top dogs, TBI all up in it, THP choppers with FLIR Imaging. Was full search mode, like the dude that strangled the School Marm at the prison last year. He got caught trying to get a drink of water in somebody's back yard finally. What are we getting for our tax dollars these days, no Rooster Cogburns anymore?
The part I was wondering about was the third man, who we we are told was 60, loading the two victims into a boat by himself, no mean feat. Meanwhile he last sees the shooter wading back to shore, the shooter musta been hanging out in the water for a considerable period of time.

I believe the third guy was only there to film the hunt. He most likely did not have a gun. On the previous page a post by unccgrad posted this account by the authorities, probably the only reason he wasn't shot is because the gun jammed.

May be a stretch, but do we know for sure that the third guy didn't have a beef with, or a drug deal gone wrong, with his two "friends" and use the missing old man as the fall guy for it?
The 2 deceased hunters had firearms, quickly accessible to third guy.....even 'if' he didn't have his own.
When a guy pulls up and blocks your boat in.......visibly loading his gun.......you're not on-the-ready?
2nd guy can wing shoot......but cannot 'quickly' get a low down on an old geezer.....after first guy is shot?
Shot in the side? Not instant death.....who doesn't return fire?
Third guy lets the supposed murderer free......with at least 3 shotguns in the blind.
Not a feasible explanation.

I believe the guy doing the update was a prosecutor, and had directly spoken to the DA and had intimate knowledge of the details. I know some Boomers aren't into social media but it was likely the best way for him to clear the air about Crabtree to the masses. 4 really know what happened and only one is left to tell the story.

The 3rd shell jammed at which time Crabtree takes it from him and hits him with the gun knockong the old man in the water. Crabtree then loads their boat up with the two victims and calls for help heading to land. Vowell's boat was found 200 yards from the blind still running.
Yeah, I'm not buying this story one bit. It about sounds like Crabtree is telling a bar story. The gun just miraculously jams on the third shot and he jumps to the rescue. Give me a F'in break.
Hilarious speculation going on here. Yes anything is POSSIBLE but this thread is moments away from Navy SEALS emerging from the lake and killing the boys and leaving the likely unarmed cinematographer to take the fall.

What is the fascination with this? Duck hunting angle? Must be. In the Emerald Empire (3 counties) have a much, much higher body count, the rough boys in the dope business kill the hell out of each other, kill employees so they don't have to pay them...year after year. But nobody is very concerned, they don't bother non-dopers and have probably never killed any duck hunters. All the Hmong Cartel growers that came out here from Wisconsin and Michigan are pretty hard on each other too. Anybody who is bothered by this kind of stuff in other states may keep it in mind if "legal" marijuana growing comes up on the ballot in your state. I don't know why or how legalization did it, but the murder rate has gone through the roof.

Fairly obvious why the murders are high ( heh heh, “high”) in your area. Far from obvious why some geezer would rampage a duck blind and leave everyone wondering WTF.
What if it was a double side x side and Voorhees was just out of shots?
Or even a pump with a plug. Guy gets out of boat and chambers a round. Shoots kid #1. Racks the gun, Shoots kid #2. Third guy comes out of the blind. Oops, out of ammo.
Most folks writing such reports for publication have no idea how guns operate, nor what laws might govern on the waterways. And then you have inaccuracies which get included every time the story gets repeated until converted to print.

I can see how, in a situation like that, an auto shotgun might jam up. I'm guessing this "duck blind" is like what my son hunts out of with a group in Missouri; it's more like a cabin on pilings you can park a boat under, has a kitchen, you sit on the porch and shoot ducks. If the old guy went in with blood on the brain, for whatever reason, wacked one guy, swung on the other, hip-shooting, not providing the shotgun enough resistance to cycle properly, you can get the same effect as limp-wristing an auto pistol. That kind of shchit happens, somebody starts shooting people at close quarters, there's no prescription or logic in how things play out.... don't try to make sense of a senseless occurance.
As Schumer said......Donald Trump really did incite an erection.

All the expert duck hunters I know use 2 shells.....just to improve on the 3 shell plug.

The gun was an autoloader and probably didn't shoulder it for the second shot causing the gun the short stroke and jam . Still don't think he intended to shoot Crabtree as they had no previous feud with him .
Generally you wouldnt load your gun until you get into the blind .
I've been following this thread for the sole reason that it is an interesting murder mystery and nothing more (well, since it's in the Hunter's Campfire sub-forum, it is nice to also know who thinks who sucks). It amazes me how some, otherwise reasonably intelligent men, assume that things could not have happened as we have been told so far. It's like people assume that all 4 were standing in a ten foot circle, holding their loaded firearms, pointing at each other in a Mexican standoff. O.K., I'll bite. If that is what the situation was, ya, the story as it has been released so far does not seem plausible. However, without any more information than we currently have, everything that has been put forth by the authorities is not only plausible; but, likely. Sheesh.
... It's like people assume that all 4 were standing in a ten foot circle, holding their loaded firearms, pointing at each other in a Mexican standoff...
At this point it's impossible to say his story "checks out". How could they possible know what happened other than what this guy has told them? It may end up being true, but there are some really big question marks and holes in his story.

That is my guess. Benellis rarely jam, unless you dont shoulder or support it. They have to have opposing force to unlock the bolt via the inertia spring. I've experienced it on overhead shots where the gun slipped off mount. The update I listened to said Crabtree said he didnt have it in him to gun the old man down. I'm keeping up with it because I waterfowl hunt regularly in areas where these types of blind laws are prevalent (private blinds on public water). We also lost a fellow hunter last week who was hunting an impoundment in eastern NC with his son and there was an AD that ended up killing him. Not sure if was his or his son's gun but that kid will have to live with seeing that the rest of his life.
If I was a crazy old boomer hell bent, why not just go ahead and smoke the camera man?
If the gun jammed, does that sound like he was intending to do that?
The plug was in......and he missed once.
A old guy that's been killin birds for 50 years isn't going to miss a man at close range. I'd say the same thing about his gun jamming. Us old hunters just don't let it happen. I run a LOT of shells through my guns and never have a feeding problem. It's the young guys with cheap guns that they never clean that have problems. I've had two FTF shells in the past five years and they came out of the same box.
An old Mainer like you sure has them Tennesseans figured out!
All the expert duck hunters I know have about a 33% jam-up rate.

Dude was 70 years old. I’m gonna go with a JC Higgins auto with a vari choke. Paper hulls
Paper hulls??
Oh my. Should we start a thread?
Saddlefreed or saddleman or whatever can wax eloquently about their smell. As if we have’t had a paper shell thread in 3 weeks.
It’s time sir.
I'm enviro conscious dude.
I not only need some paper hulls, but also need to figure out a way to use that super hard TSS shot with fibre wads and no plastic shot cup to be left laying around in Ma Nature.
Back on topic: I still think I'm going to go with renegade's theory

They aren't much of a expert then. As I said, In the past five years I've run a pallet load of shells through my guns and NEVER have had a jam. I don't consider myself a expert, just a guy that spends a lot of time hunting and shooting.

that's mighty "ageist" of you.
Gonna get the thought police to put in a station on the Hi-Line if you keep that up.

Have you called anyone to get your DVD player to work with your tv remote today yet?
I can’t believe nobody has asked,.. how were the ducks flying that day?
The way it sounds they didn't even get the deeks in the water. Nobody has said anything about what happened to the kids and old mans deeks. I'm sure someone snatched them up.

I've seen the "Old man stay off my turf" behavior before. Only it was on a golf course 30 years ago. Some of my buddies and I worked the late shift and would hit the links after work. We played public courses all around central Ohio. A lot of times we'd run into old guys that played the same course every day. They acted like they owned the place and would try to order others around, or jump in front of us. Of course this behavior got them no where with a bunch of young, full of pizz and vinegar cops. The only difference was that they had a 9 iron in their hand instead of a 3" 12 gauge. I'm sure this old fella felt like he owned the lake. Who knows what makes someone snap. My old Dad was a hot head all his life and would fight with little provocation. He'd hit you with whatever he had in his hand without considering the consequences.

What's a "DVD player"?
But, now that you mention it, I went to the store for some new cables for my VCR and the kid there looked at me kinda funny when I asked for help.
Just get him to build you a co-ax to optical converter.
Look fella,
don't go throwing all that high teck stuff at me.
I'm just getting used to switches on the wall for the electricical lights, instead of the pull cords like they should be.
And what's with these newfangled terlets, with a tank right there where ya pee. Shouldn't that tank be up near the ceiling so's ya can get some proper flow going?
Back on topic.
If they allowed punt guns once again, everyone would only need one shot to get their limit, right?
Might cut down on the speculation about how many shells were in the gun, did it jam, etc etc, if you're only allowed one load per day.

Doesn't this belong in the "All things Golf" thread?
We're discussing duck hunting and you go and bring golf into it. Sheesh.
Slum--Browning Humpbacks don't jam unless you don't know how to put them together or get the tube rings right. 33% jam rate? Must be a Stoeger! They leave the decoys out all season.

Don't they grow moss on them?
Canvasback dekes looking all green and slimy and stuff?
I really don't understand all the interest . But if you lived in or grew up around Weakley County this is a big story .
Then the misconception that this was a feeble 70 year old man shooting an antique shot gun is wrong . A man who launches his boat , maintains a decoy spread , hunts 40 plus days a year ain't what I call feeble . Probably in better shape than most 40 year olds on the fire.

So true Beaver10. We ought to start a pool. Everybody throw in $10 and throw out a theory.
All this talk about autos jamming. Are you guys serious?
I carried an old Remington (revelation) A5 clone for several years. And also a Weatherby Centurian gas gun for many years. Neither of them ever jammed on me.
But I was shooting pheasant, rabbit, partridge and quail rather than ducks. Perhaps that is the difference.

Feeble in the mind does not necessitate feeble in the body.
I don't think Q believers are demented. They've been dumb as sh*t racists their entire lives.

Lol!!!
Over the last 4 or 5 years I have owned 5 semi shotguns. Inertia guns, gas guns , gas /inertia guns.
One of the 1st things I do with em. Fugg off firing em. Run the schit outta em, get em hot as hell. 2 or 3 boxes of shells loading em fast as I can squeeze off the rounds Shouldered and 2 handed at the waist.
0 malfunctions.... Any of em.
Old dude was rich and probably had a top notch semi like a Benneli SBE 3 or something.

I've seen them some of the best jam except maybe an old A5. Benelli M1, Win SX2, Browning Gold, Beretta A400. Use them in $hitty enough conditions and they will all choke. You can make an inertia gun jam 100% of the time by not supporting it. Most failures I've seen have been due to too much or the wrong kind of oil, dirty trigger groups from powder or debris and gummed up gas systems from lack of cleaning. Waterfowling is hard on guns as its usually wet, cold, freezing and around mud that can get into an action.

come down here and hunt them in in the salt, I'd take pump over an auto every day in those conditions.

If I were going to shoot someone, I would not wait until I got around them to load my gun. My gun would have been loaded and ready when I got there.
Many years ago I guided some deer and pig hunters from Indiana and Illinois. They came back in spring to turkey hunt. There were two of them that wanted to hunt together. They were partners in a business. One of them was bow hunting and the other was hunting with a shotgun. The gun hunter kept falling behind and I had to caution him a couple of times to keep his gun unloaded until we heard the birds. He wound up shooting two birds and the bow hunter got none. A few months later I got a call from the Illinois State Police. They were investigating the murder of the bow hunter and suspected the gun hunter of killing him. That was the last time I guided anyone. I have little doubt that the gun hunter intended to murder his friend while hunting down here but I kept messing up his plans. The only reason I had said something to the gun hunter is because he was walking behind us and loading his gun. The terrain was very hilly and rocky and I just wanted to make sure he didn't fall and have an AD. Had he been in front and loaded his gun I would have had him keep his chamber open. All he would have had to do close the chamber and fire twice. No way I could have reacted in time.

How do semi auto shotguns run when not shouldered correctly?
What about a rig that was originally set up for lead that might barely run right w steel?
Easy to screw up?
Gas guns will run fine. Its the inertia spring in the bolt that requires an offsetting force to allow the spring ro compress and bolt to unlock. Most steel loads are high brass and have enough powder charge to run most any semi auto. A lot of the 3.5" guns struggle with the handicap clays loads though
Hilarious speculation going on here. Yes anything is POSSIBLE but this thread is moments away from Navy SEALS emerging from the lake and killing the boys and leaving the likely unarmed cinematographer to take the fall.
Sounds plausible. Better run with it, there ain’t much time.
OBION COUNTY, Tenn. — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation announced the body of David Vowell has been recovered in the waters of Reelfoot Lake, on Saturday.
TBI said Vowell was located around 3 p.m., on Saturday, near the area of the incident where he is accused of killing two duck hunters. TBI officials said his identity has been confirmed and an autopsy will be performed.
Got a call on Wednesday night. Lots of open outfitters blinds. Guess the police tape was flairing birds or people were just scared. I was tempted to load up and go. There's several kill holes out there.
Knocked out of his boat into waist deep water. Water filled the waders. It makes sense that he did not get far.
I was duck hunting a slough 20 miles north of Reelfoot 3 weeks ago. +1/4" ice two of the three mornings we hunted. 35*F might have been a little generous. But, you get the idea...
Orion you do any good? Way back when I used to read about Nash Buckingham duck hunting stories on Reelfoot lake. Seemed like that place would be a bucket list location for hardcore waterfowlers. Mb

We did "OK"... Nothing close to a limit. But, didn't get skunked, either. Our shooting sucked the first day. Second and third day, we dropped birds out of each group that flared. We hunted with a buddy on a slough on private property. Friend of a friend hunted Reelfoot the week before we got there. Not many birds that week, either.
If Reelfoot is on your bucket list, I say "Go for it." I would not let this incident change your mind. And there can be a BUNCH of ducks there. But, like any other type of hunting, timing is everything. Three weeks ago, the cold weather had not yet forced the ducks down out of the upper flyway. With this last bad weather that just came through, today they are probably covered over with ducks. Of course today is also the last day of the season...

Lot of clueless people around ohio...Must be nice to be so important that you never have to deign to spend time with normal people or go to work. Other people can "risk their lives" to bring you food and other stuff while you hide from the 99.9 safe virus. Retards.
You guys should all be ashamed of your antics in this thread.
With all your guessing and wild and crazy presumptuous ideas notta one of you even came close to what the FACTS have now revealed happened in that duckblind on Reelfoot Lake the morning of the 25th.
It's been as plain as the nose on your face all this time..
The state of Tennessee now has 3 more COVID-19 related deaths for 2021..

Are you sure they are not 3 more deaths from Trump's insurrection? I mean Covid is so last year and now that sleepy Joe is president they need to make those numbers go down.

It is early in the year, possibly a 50/50 hybrid situation?
