An upstate New York town is holding a squirrel hunting competition for teens this weekend — sparking death threats and an animal rights petition signed by 20,000 people who ripped the yearly event as “barbaric.”

The seventh annual “Squirrel Scramble” in Germantown on Saturday is open to “men, women and youth hunters,” with the main focus on teenagers aged 12 to 15, according to HudsonValley 360.

I wonder if the crazy squirrel lady will be there.....
I'm glad to hear they are going through with it!
I also hope some game wardens are in the area to enforce anti hunter harassment laws.
Straight across the big lake there's a big kerfuffle about a LGS holding a coyote contest. The animal rights activists got lots to keep them busy.
Not squirrels. Our local chukar hunt. Sent this pic to my relatives in some metro areas, said they're not likely to see a pic of kids having fun hunting down there.

Newspaper published a letter to the editor a week or so prior. Someone had seen the notice and was upset the kids would be hunting pen raised birds released on the site. Most of the replies were not supportive of the writer................imagine that.

I assume that if these protestors are opposed to this event, they're also all vegetarians. Otherwise, they'd be complete hypocrites.
What a bunch of dumb fuggin gunts.
What's really cool is they call it barbaric and make death threats . Typical liberal . And there are 20000 of them that think it's ok to threaten the kids ?
Where is the outrage about that ?
Kenneth
Rock chuck tournaments are popular here in the spring. As you might expect, PETA has been involved.
Too bad all those folks in upstate and other rural areas of NY have to live under the tyranny of the NYC area. Good for them.....flip the antis the big ole bird.
Yeah. And those pictures of mistreated sled dogs jumping 4 feet into the air out of excited joy as they prepare to run are simply disgusting.....

PETA sucks.
Sounds like all the commotion that used to come out of western NY state annually when the Holley Fire Department in Holley, N.Y., Orleans county, had their "Squirrel Slam" contest as a fundraiser for the department. Guess they gave up on it after all the death threats and harassment from the liberal animal rights crowd. I had been considering entering it just for grins and do some extra squirrel hunting during the season and help out the fire dept. but it's now history. Reading that link I saw a lot of familiar terms like "bloodbath" "barbaric" "slaughter" etc. GMAFB. What's next? fishing tournaments?
"What's next? fishing tournaments?"

Well, there IS more basis for that. And "sport fishing" in general.

If you ain't gonna kill and eat it, then it's basically torturing fish for "fun". And if you are killing fish ONLY for the chance of winning a prize, that's just plain sick.

But I'm not going to tell you you can't do it (catch and release). I just don't do it myself.

Mostly..... smile
I'm more of a catch and fillet fisherman myself.
The nuts in New Jersey are trying to ban all animal competitions including big buck contests and dog field trials!
Never heard of the "Barbaric" squirrel before. Looks a lot like one of our gray versions.

I think the Baker City, Oregon porcupine races and the Murphy, Idaho horny toad races are simply footnotes in the history books now. I was hoping to do the toad races by pulling in with a dually crew-cab rig towing a 6-horse trailer hauling a hot rod desert horny toad comfortably nestled in a cigar box. If I won, I was going to sell stock in my entry's breeding rights.

Are we still doing frog jumps anywhere, and when will horse racing cease?

There was a recent run at coyote derbies here in Oregon. Passed in the State Senate, but failed in the House.

A similar note: It's sad to see so many tortured Metropolis people forced to stand in line just to get coffee each morning. We should outlaw those coffee shops. If they don't tell me how to live out here, I'm more than willing to leave them alone there.
is dwarf tossing legal ?
Wonder if that milano chick will call the cops...
Wonder if the Calaveras County Frog Jumping is still a thing?
I hate those little MFer’s. They fuuuck over my tomatoes 🍅
Never get to see the type of persons that make these death threats.

If the NY wardens are like the ones in Maine and NH, that are on the TV realty show, they'll probably be there trying to catch some legal hunter, and try to figure out a way to bust him.
