The Idiocy Knows No Bounds - 03/05/21
From the KCRG website.
The Marion, Iowa high school's teams have long been "Indians". Things being what they are, it was decided that this had to change. Nearly 3,000 people voted in a survey for a change and "Mavericks" won out over such things as "Red Bulls" and "Red Storm", receiving over half of the total votes.
But now, a snag has arisen.
"... it has been brought to the attention of the district that the origin of the term 'Maverick' is from Samuel A. Maverick, an early 1800s Texas rancher and slave owner (oh, the horror - my insertion). The name was originally selected as an option due to the definition of an independent thinker, which is directly derived from Samuel Maverick who refused to brand his cattle."
District administrators said that they will recommend the Board not adopt the "Marion Mavericks" name.
