From the KCRG website.
The Marion, Iowa high school's teams have long been "Indians". Things being what they are, it was decided that this had to change. Nearly 3,000 people voted in a survey for a change and "Mavericks" won out over such things as "Red Bulls" and "Red Storm", receiving over half of the total votes.
But now, a snag has arisen.
"... it has been brought to the attention of the district that the origin of the term 'Maverick' is from Samuel A. Maverick, an early 1800s Texas rancher and slave owner (oh, the horror - my insertion). The name was originally selected as an option due to the definition of an independent thinker, which is directly derived from Samuel Maverick who refused to brand his cattle."
District administrators said that they will recommend the Board not adopt the "Marion Mavericks" name.
Dear God! Samuel A. Maverick owned slaves.

Let's dig up the coffin and burn him at the stake. That's the result of a good witch hunt.
Even when the fool walks along the road, his sense is lacking, and he demonstrates to everyone that he is a fool.

What about Warriors, or Braves. This is no difference from Trojans, or Vikings, or Celtics, any white group.

I believe that Iowa, with last summer's baseball, was the first state to restart high school athletics.
Pretty sure James Garner maybe might have worn blackface at some time or another too; another strike against Mavericks. He was almost certainly a white dude.😱

No telling where this nonsense ends. Even the robo-censor for this site bleeps out words that merely resemble something that might be offensive, like the word that means “cheap” but also kinda-sorta looks and sounds like the common offensive word for black people. So, now we’re also being held accountable for other peoples ignorance.

From my dictionary app:

The words [bleep] and [bleep] are etymologically unrelated to the highly offensive and inflammatory racial slur euphemistically referred to as the N-word, despite the words' visual and auditory resemblance to it. Because of that resemblance, however, both [bleep] and [bleep] are sometimes taken to be offensive.

How is going out to do your best and hopefully be victorious while being called Indians disrespectful to the name?
Sounds like PETA should step in.....he refused to brand cattle, which PETA would agree with, and they care more about animals than a few humans being slaves.
