My nephew finished up with his Hunters safety field day today. He unsurprisingly passed with no problems. It's been a rough couple of years for him but he's really taken to the Alaska life. He loves to hunt, fish, and camp. Pretty proud of him today. Tradition said he deserved a new gun for his efforts, and he's now a proud owner of new Ruger Wrangler. Great job kiddo!

Good deal right there,
What's the first thing he can hunt for and when?
Congratulations to him and I know you are preparing him for a real life adventure. You will both have a good time.

He’s been hunting for bunnies and grouse already, but this fall I’ll take him caribou hunting. He can’t wait to go!

Can you adopt me? I'm sure my wife would sign off on it.

In all seriousness, I hate to hear about a kid having a rough time like that but sounds like he's in great hands. A big thumbs up to you sir.
Wow great to hear Ptarmigan. Congrats to your nephew.
I remember now you posting about bringing the boy into your home.

Good on ya for that and the proper “indoctrination”! You’re a good man.

Congrats to the young man.
Very cool !
That warms my heart!
Congratulations and great job all around!!!
That's awesome. I've been teaching in the class for several years now and they would not let us hold it last year.....breaks my heart. Watching the focus of the kids....and several moms and dads is refreshing.

Awesome!
Well done to both of you!

And from another HS Instructor, that picture is particularly special with his smile and the fact that he’s indexing his finger with that pistol. That means the young man is applying what he learned. Very cool.
Great story and pics, Ptarmigan! Thanks for sharing.
P-Tar,

Awesome mate !!

You already know my feelings of family, hunting, fishing, camping, butchering & eating wild game.

Respect Brother !

That’s kind of a long story I guess. Abbreviated version is that he moved here from Guinea-Bissau to go to college 20+ yrs ago. Met my SIL, got married and had two kids. My SIL being a bi-polar alcoholic was probably too much to deal with and they divorced. He went into the military and served multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. I know he tried to keep in touch as much as he could, but my SIL threatened him with all kinds of stuff. He’s now remarried and some kind of economics/finance professional outside of DC. He talks to his son pretty often and will have him for a month this summer. At the time though, Miles (my nephew) knew us much better and we have boys of similar age. Whatever happens down the road is up in the air, but everyone just wants what’s best for the kid.
Outstanding!

A congrats to the kid, but I'd not be inclined to start one with a handgun. Most Hunter Ed programs have little to no focus on handguns. Do be sure he's aware of potential forcing cone issues.

He’s been shooting rifles and handguns a lot since he moved here with us. I’m more than confident that he is fine with a single action .22 that he can strap on his side for grouse and bunnies. Firearm safety is not an option in my world. My kids know it and so don’t the guys I hunt with, otherwise I don’t hunt or shoot with them.
Proud day , congratulations to both of you .
Fantastic job all around! Makes me smile. Well done, sir.
Congratulations
