I sure do miss bands that would showcase great guitar music and especially the stand alone solos. I don't understand why modern music lost that.

Some early Allman Bros, Satriani, Clapton, Joe Walsh...
Pretty much any flavor that floats your boat...

This is probably the most iconic 'solo' in history even though it's by two guys. Don Felder and Joe Walsh in their prime...it doesn't get any better.

Johnny Winter and Rick Derringer when they played in the band Johnny Winter And. Album was made in 1970. Probably some of the best complimentary guitar work by two guitarists in the song Prodigal Son. Winter plays a gunslinger deep guitar lead in the first solo and Derringer plays a blistering cry baby pedal guitar in the second solo.

Prodigal Son

Lastly Johnny Winter from Second Winter, Album was made around 1968. Song was titled I love Everybody. Blistering slide guitar work by Johnny.

Why stop at guitar solo's?
How about a drum solo leading into a base solo leading into the guitar solo?

Posted By: Kaiser Norton Re: Guitar Solos - 03/13/21
Not every good guitar solo has to to be an example of minutes long flatuence - I prefer smaller soloes spaced out amongst the song, or a quick little stand-alone. These by Robert Quine, Richard Lloyd, and Tom Verlaine are excellent examples of the former:

As an example of the latter, Bob Rupe nails his little solo in the middle of this Silos tune:

And I always loved the fuzzed-out outro to this old Thin White Rope ode to friendship - a great juxtaposition to it mainly acoustic melody:

I complimented Princes abilities as a player. I've watched an interview with Harrisons son that was on stage at the time & basically said Princes performance was uncalled & not ask for.
A report on what I watched.
Personally I thought it pretty damn good, but wondered about the odd expressions of the other players. Not until I saw Dahni's interview that some things came together.

If bitching about reality or the displeasure of Georges own son, well, I guess I was. Touche'

Tommy Emanuel is an established Aussie who is best known there as part of the Emanuel Brothers with his brother Phil.
They split and Tommy hung out with Chet Atkins and now he is known here.
Very talented, both Tommy and Phil.
Tommy uses a Maton guitar which is an Aussie brand for those interested.

People who appreciate talent, meaning they enjoy recognition of experiencing something uncommon with few or not other people being able to emulate it are rare in todays' market where the primal beat has overtaken the melody.

There are no really good guitar players out there in new music because the definition has changed.
People confuse fast or heavy or articulate as being good and anything not contemporary top 40 to be old hat, but what is missing and seldom seen any more is feel. The other thing is that modern players often struggle with older classic rock which is why you don;t see much of it with younger bands though they admit to listening to it. I learned that when I owned a bar. They told me. The bands I hired loved the songs the kids played on the juke box but there was not the talent to play it. They told me.
Clapton was a pioneer, so was the man who idolized him, Hendrix. Page influenced everyone. Blackmore with his original staccato style of playing was different again and bot understated and underrated.

What Clapton and Gilmore taught the music world is that a melodic sound and even a one note solo can captivate an audience because of the emphasis on sound, music and tone it provides to compliment the song as a solo is meant to be and not the the self absorbed marketing exercise in attempting to stand out over the band and competition which is largely became.

The 2 musicians that stand out for playing less and impressing more also made it harder to emulate as you cannot fudge feel. Those were Clapton on guitar and Andy Fraser on Bass who actually slowed down his bass notes over his career and made it much harder for the cover bands to emulate as he had as Clapton, both feel and technique.

With that, we are left with the listener and the expert.
The listener is of most value, as he is the arbiter of what is pleasing and good, supported by his wallet.
The expert is more often offering opinion which is subjective enough that we never have the same record collections, not ever will.
If there is a 3rd group, it is the musician who listens to not only what is played, but how it is played and using what equipment, so that the player can be separated, digested and appreciated for what they bring to the song.
Collectively, we are the audience and what we like, is of importance to ourselves, collectively.

This is fun- You know you are truly strange if you are too weird for Ozzy Osbourne's taste:

Ozzy Osbourne: "I tried out that Buckethead guy. I met with him and asked him to work with me but only if he got rid of the fu*king bucket. So I came back a bit later and he's wearing this green fu*king Martian's-hat thing. I said, 'Look, just be yourself!' He told me his name was Brian, so I said that's what I'd call him. He says, 'No one calls me Brian except my mother.' So I said, 'Pretend I'm your mum then!' I haven't even got out of the room and I'm already playing [bleep] mind games with the guy. What happens if one day he's gone and there's a note saying, 'I've been beamed up to the mothership?'

I say "Sanity before vanity".

Long live rock and roll............................even the shirtless variety.

Yeah I don't hate it, and his body of work speaks for itself. At some point though...put your shirt on. 🤣

SRV always my favorite, followed by EC, (further on up the road). But always loved the riff in My Sharrona by the Knack.

How about this guy, wrote this song Santana had a hit with. I was turned on to Gabor when I was a freshman in high school by a friend. I hope he's doing well if still alive, my friend that is, I don't know Mr Szabo:

Anyone know who Eddie Van Halen regarded at Number One?

That's the real trouble with threads like this. Those who never tuned to anything but top 40 stations have an idea who's the best they've ever heard, but they haven't heard much.

Probably Les Paul, they were a lot alike, loved tinkering with guitars

Steve Vai says Danny Gatton was the best

So many folks have so many opinions about guitarists - look how quickly this thread has grown.

How true, how true - and there is no accounting for musical "taste". Due to the major plethora of guitar players and the limited exposure/knowledge of most of us, the "best" labels are almost meaningless. Is there a capable judge these days? Now - if we say "I most LIKE so and so - - -"

I never will say that DG was the "best" - or say that about any guitarist. But, I know his playing quite well and will say that, if those of you who know guitar will listen closely to the full range of Danny Gatton's playing, you are likely to discard your notions about any supreiority of a bunch of other players of this type.

I keep forgetting Steve Lukather, & while trying to think about which Toto song to look for, Duh! just type in Lukather solos.

Known for extremely fast fingers. His work is on many albums besides Toto's.

A little bit of Jimmy Hendricks goes a long way. Robin and Jimmy Dewar have many that I like, but this one popped into my feeble brain first. It's not standalone guitar, but worthy of a listen.

A big + 1 for Steve Stevens.
Posted By: killerv Re: Guitar Solos - 03/16/21
ok...you got me cccc, he all but said it. That was the name he through out when asked.

Sadly, another great guitarist lost to some internal demons.

I'll put kotzen up against about anyone these days. And he can sing as good as he plays.

Yup

And there’s always going to be 2 or 3 guys on here that pluck some obscure guitarist from the Celtic Woman tribute band, Liberace’s accompanyment or whatnot for his contribution. Leaves me shaking my head. We all have our favorites and opinions so that’s what makes it great.

lol

Yezzir. I was kinda hoping for a "Spotlight on Ed King" thread. When did he leave Skynyrd anyhow?

One of my all-time favorites .. Mark Knopfler "Dire Straights"

Very FEW musicians of today that inspire "kids" to WANT to learn guitar.

Guitar is harder with smaller audiences than going online and using the phone.

Most video games are easier than learning guitar, too.
