AUSTIN (KXAN) — Texas-based fast food chain Whataburger is saying ‘thank you’ to its employees with $90 million in bonuses after a year impacted by the pandemic and winter storms.

“The past year reshaped how we live, work and play, with the restaurant and hospitality industry being heavily impacted by the pandemic,” said Ed Nelson, Whataburger CEO, in a press release.

For continuing to deliver “despite challenging circumstances,” Whataburger said employees also got Extra Mile bonuses, emergency pay and a doubling of their 401(k) plan matching for 2020.

The company also announced General Managers will get a new title — “Operating Partners” — and compensation.

“Operating Partners are business leaders who run multimillion-dollar restaurants, take care of their teams, and serve as the face of Whataburger in their communities,” said Nelson. “They are the hearts and souls of our brand.”

Whataburger said Operating Partners are on track to earn six figures annually, “including bonus potential of up to 150 percent of their target incentive.”

I will definitely continue to patronize them!
Wish we had one in the Denver, CO area.
outstanding
Very classy gesture. Been going to Whataburger all my life. Ours is a local landmark and has earned its reputation.
Double meat Whataburger Jr, with Honey BBQ & Onions. Ummmm Ummmm Good.
Whataburger is outstanding for fast food and the hired help is generally nice to you. I search them out when I travel. I don't much go for 3 visits from a waiter before I can order food, or table cloths, or tipping. It is nice to be able to get up and go refill your drink yourself and the food at Whataburger is eons ahead of McD's and BK.
WhataBurger beats the Hell outta McSchitts and Burger Queen!!! I eat their quite often.
Best tasting "fast food" hamburger in America.
Excellent I need o buy some more burgers.

Mahomes is bringing Whataburger to Kansas City. He'll have the first Whataburger's in both Kansas and Missouri.
How much will the rank and file kitchen / counter help receive or will it go to management ?
I dont think we have them down here in SWFL. We have a lot of new development so maybe I just missed seeing one.

What-a-burger is a different chain.
Awesome deal, some companies get it.

There’s a handful in Destin Area. But I guess that’s nw Florida?
We don't have Whataburger but rumors of having one soon. The wife and I travel to San Antonio each October for the Sporting Clays National Championships and my wife has to eat at the nearest one in Texarcana. I enjoy them too. Class move.
Rick
Whataburger....................eh
Aint no whataburger around here and we’re bigger than Billings

That’s some sheeit

Wish they’d hurry up with the one planned for Nashville. Probably won’t be able to get near it for months.
that's a cool thing to do, but I gotta be honest, the whataburgers here in Alabama are Nasty (capital N) ,,I eat little fast food, but sometimes fried chicken and a local mom and pop burger place, but whataburger I had once...horrible.
I ate at one in Dallas, Tx 2 yrs ago. Looked like Mogadishu in there. Took them 20 mins to fix our 2 burgers and they were not busy.

Willing to give them another chance.
I've never eaten one. My sister from Dallas says they're the greatest, better than In&Out.
Good company. Terrible food.

Really? I've heard just the opposite. Of course I'm from MN and we don't have much to choose from.

Well....if they’s a bunch of white folks working at the next one. I still might. That’s a big IF.
I married a Texan, and all her kin are Texan. There is nothing more Texan than Whataburger and Dr Pepper. Never shall a bad word be said about either. We drove to Florida and back last week. It was like they'd seen some kind of exotic dove that only appears every 20 years or something everytime they saw a Whataburger. "Oh look, WHATABURGER!!!!" They're not bad, I don't avoid them, but they're not the end-all, be-all of fast food.
Texas hype???!!!
i miss eating at Whataburger since leaving Texas.

I've ate at them since I was a kid. None around our present locale, yet. Anyway, closest is 150 miles. Mahomes bringing them to KC though so that gets them 50 miles closer. They're all right. Lots of stuff I prefer, but they're better than most fast food chains. You don't have to be too good to compete with Mickey D's and Booger King.

How well they do is highly store/crew dependent. One opened near me a while back and when the training crew was there and for about a year after that it was really good. After a bit of turnover and maybe some owner/operator complacency set in, well, meh.
Whataburger operates franchises in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and Georgia. The original Whataburger restaurant is in Corpus Christi, Texas, where it was originally headquartered, but has since moved operations to San Antonio, Texas. Whataburger, which was founded in 1950 by Harmon Dobson, is still family-owned and operated.

My local Whataburger has done pretty well with putting their best customer-service personnel at the drive-through. 90% of the time, they are very polite and professional. They aren't at the Chik-Fil-A level, but still pretty good for this area. I try to compliment them on their service when they do a good job.

That story is dated as Whataburger recently sold out to a big conglomerate. Happened probably two years ago. Many fans were apoplectic.
I started having to go inside so I could read the little screen at the register to make sure my order was entered correctly. Then the kitchen could at least have a shot at getting it right, but that got spotty as well.

From my perspective... yes. Their breakfast biscuits are ok. Everything else gets an unenthusiastic "meh".
God, they sure look like a good burger on YouTube.
They don't come down this far, unfortunately. Otherwise, I would hit them up. Used to enjoy a big fat Whataburger as a younger fellow.
They're not world beaters, but when done properly they are pretty good.
Always hit them up when down in Destin....

Good Job Whataburger
People bad mouthin’ whataburger when places like Iowa call that nasty sloppy joe sandwich thing (minus the sloppy part, just a pile of greasy joe) a culinary delicacy?

Geez.

Talking about Chic Fil A . . . I doubt the Dobson family approves of kissing the boots of racist BLM Negros.

Lots of low IQ folk live in Iowa. They are well represented here on the 'fire.

Your sister is right.
Highly recommend the Swiss Mushroom burger.
Id love to hear from those that dislike Whataburger, what they consider better for a fast food burger. I also notice that most naysayers are north of the MasonDixon line.....
