Man O man that's a dandy one for sure!!! Keep us posted please. Getting to old to get a new pup, would worry about him going to new owners (relations) that wouldn't take him into the bush like I would. Looks like she's not backing down from that longhorn? She'll have some gritt. There ya go, Gritt, short for??? Bill 👣🐾👣🐾🇨🇦
Nice pup, already at your side and checking out livestock.

Two heelers?

Gonna be a lot of dog politics between em as to who’s your REAL dog, and who’s just a spare.

Huntsman 22,

That breed is exceptionally smart.

I think that's perfect...I should be permanently moving to my land in about two years and I have always said that when I do, I will get two males, one blue and one red and they will be called Captn' and Gus respectfully.
Talked to a breeder once about having two and she said to never have two bitches. The other combos will work.

What does Finn weigh? Our gal was 33.5# yesterday and see maybe topping out at 35# or so.
Ed, I don't know. But I take the pup in the 18th to get chipped, I'll weigh him then. He is the tallest heeler I've ever had, tho....
That is the cutest little mutt I ever saw. If it doesn't work out please ship him down here to me in North Carolina.
That is hilarious. Training that ape to watch Josey Wales. A dog that appreciates Josey Wales will be a good dog.

Listen up Long Horns ! I’m the new kid around here and there’s gonna be some changes.

First change on the agenda is directed to the mulatto looking punk who’s eyeballing me. There better not be any BLM bullshît coming outta your pie hole, or I will eat a hole through you big enough to drive a Ford F-350.

I'm just now seeing this. Good on you Huntsman22! Lots of smiles here!

You look happy!
Congrats, huntsman.

Love those red heelers, but I know some people are partial to blues. Either way, they are an amazing breed.

Best dog I've been around was a red. I saw plenty of working heelers that took a beating on the job, without a complaint. Stoic is an understatement. Busted ribs getting kicked by livestock, or sent flying in the air. You'd never know it, looking at the dogs. Tough, loyal, fearless, and obedient. A heeler isn't like any other breed, not even close.
[Linked Image from hosting.photobucket.com]
Rudder on that one, Sam!

I remember two questions among the heeler people. Red or blue? Rudder or no rudder? Definitely strong opinions on both.
I rescued a red that had parvo. Owners didn't want to treat her. She was a hoot. When she was older, she would playfully smack bigger dogs on the muzzle with her paw. Funny to see big Rotts, German Shepherds, etc. back pedal with a heeler messing with them. And when they ran, she chased them down nipping at their heels. Loved that dog.

Dogs have tails, I ain't chopping it off!

Been around both red and blue heelers and love them both.

Blues more chill, some reds are a little extra grouchy. Or not, both great.
I always heard that the rudder helped them running on the backs of livestock in a corral. Better for balance. They seem to put that tail to good use for sure, but all my dogs have been house pets.

And every heeler person that I have know thought reds were more intense. And blues more mellow, as you mentioned.
My old blue female was the most possessive, protective dog I've ever owned. She was a big baby who let both boys as babies use her as a pillow daily, but would hammer anyone who came in her yard, or worse house.
.At a rodeo one day she busted out the escape window in the living quarters on the bed, jumped out the window and bit my buddy who "snuck" behind my trailer to take a wizz. After the first 2 or 3 bites, she must have realized who he was and walked over and lay down under the chair I was sitting in under said buddy's awning. We were both 10-12 beers in at that point and just laughed. He tried like hell to kick her away before he got bit, but no luck. From that day on, he could walk in my house or trailer and she wouldn't even look at him.

Need to start looking for a new one, too many folks breeding "soft" ones here in Pennsylvania, would like to get a good working stock bred one.
NIce, I really like the videos. She is rightfully spoiled.

Don,

Our female at six months seems to be hanging at 35#, very lean with the classic big shoulders and thick thighs. Well out of proportion. My wife wants another next year, a red, which is what she was after to start but just could not land one. Maybe Ruby will hit 40? Sitting with her in a hotel room in Roswell heading north.
God bless those dogs.

Cool.
Good looking pup and steers.

I’ve always liked Heelers. I had a buddy with one that would play fetch as long as you let it. Anytime someone came over it was standing at the door with a ball or a frisbee.
Been a while since I updated this thread... Well, Miss Lorena is now a momma. 7 healthy pups outta Finn, delivered yesterday. I had to help on the first and last pups, but she done a great job on the others. She couldn't figure out how to get the sack off the firstborn and he finally quit moving. As soon as I opened it, she figured out how to get it off and get him revived and cleaned up. The last pup came just a few minutes after number 6. She was still working on 6 and kinda forgot about ol' number 7. He quit moving also, so I took number 6 away and she focused on getting 7 taken care of. All went right to the tiddy with no help. For a little, stunted 28 pound girl with all them babies in her, she turned into a regular pot-bellied pig last couple weeks....
[Linked Image from hosting.photobucket.com]

Today, she's back to her slender, sexy self after shedding out a bucket o' babies....

4 male pups. I think a couple may be blues, as they have gray/black ears/spots/highlights. I reckon the others to be reds, as they're brown masks/spots. I'll see if I'm right as they color up....

There ya go.....
What a good girl.

Pretty cool Don!
Gotta love those Heelers!
6 weeks old today. They are coloring up good and getting their personalities ironed out. I decided to keep the little female red that is most like mom. She is the one to the right in the group pic, 3rd from left in the step pic, and a sleeping pic of her. I call her Dolly. I've had other females named Kelly, Roxy, Sally, Lacy, Shale and the mom (Miss Lorena/Loree Darlin'). The blue female (Crazy Cora) is really people oriented, and such a sweetie, that the decision was tough...... Damn, I'm going to have a hard time when I have to get rid of the rest in a couple weeks. I've had more fun with these guys since they was born, than I've had for a long time.

Don, are you coming up for Icebreaker?
Well, I planned to originally. But I don't know if it would be very smart of me to subject everybody there, and have them put up with all my unmannered mutts, as I'd have to bring them..... So I'll probably beg out....
Hard not to smile sitting in a pile of puppies.
Just showed the woman your pics and she volunteered to puppy sit......lol

If you do come up I'd like the chance to make it worthwhile and get one for my dad.
(if it works out)

Those are good looking pups!
But they have their tails chopped off. Think dad would be able to handle that?
We could work around that issue.....lol

Either way those are happy heeler puppy dogs!
Why do you dock them Don?
So they don't look like a damn coyote.....
I didn't know.

I see a lot of cow dogs with docked tails...always wondered why.
Jimbo.....Out here in Ca they are super popular dog..... I've had 4 and been around 100's of others and I've only seen maybe 10 WITH the tail .... must be a regional thing🤔 Austrailin Shepards also get docked tails.... usually only the collies, kelpies, Mc nab's , etc keep their tails. Who knows.
Ps.... great looking pups Hunts.

Around here, we dock the tails so they so they don't hit the hot wire on the fence as the dog scoots under. Have you ever seen a heeler run with his tail low?

They will duck low and crawl under a fence, never touching their shoulders or hips. But they inevitably hook the bottom wire with their tail if it is long.
I have heelers and we don't doc the tails up here. Of course, we don't have many wired fences around here. That tail is like a rudder for them, helps them get around a lot quicker and on target. JMHO

A dog with no tail ain’t gonna slap u in the face with manure when it jumps in the pickup.

Beautiful puppies……

They are so fun as puppies….my new one is having her first heat…..

We decided not to breed her….

She gonna get spaded
Great looking pups. Always liked the look of a red heeler but I don't have a job for one. Wouldn't be real fair for them.
So it's about as critical as you wife wanting to have the boys circumcised so that everyone matches?

Got it.
Cutie.

The genetic makeup of the Aussie breed is such that the last third of the tail is brittle and delicate, making it prone to breaking or splitting, which would cause a lot more pain and trauma for the dog than the process of tail docking.

That makes sense. I was looking at two of my dogs the other day with a thermal monocular and the hound/cur mix has a thick tail that was the same temperature color as the rest of his body (except his nose). The thinner tail of the Pit mix was cold as her nose through the thermal. No meat/circulation in there.

I'll take them! laugh
updating this old thread. Finn, Loree and Dolly are doing good. The pup is sure turning into a good little dog, for just being a year old. Loves to hunt and blood trail. Got her onto a bunch of doe antelope kills this winter and she just loves finding them....

Those looks - "Get your ass in gear old man and kill some [bleep]!"
That’s quite a pack riding right behind you on the atv. Better keep them busy.
Nice looking trio.

Awesome, hunts. Sounds like a great pup. Happy to hear that wacko Finn is still hanging in there alive and well. 🤣
