For me, it would have been some swank place in Toma, Wisconsin, in 1968.

They had a fancy fountain in the lobby. We waited at least a half hour.

The cheapest thing on the menu was a Chef's salad for five dollars.

We left. laugh
i'm more of a western sizzlin guy but i ate at a ruths chris one time in shreveport in 83 or so. if i remember correctly, it was all ala cart. i think i spent about 75 bucks and came away unimpressed. friggen tater was like 10 bucks.

Wifey works for a oilfield service company. I have to escort her to team building dinners a couple of times a year. They go to places like Vic and Anthony’s, Potente, Da Marco, B&B Butchers restaurant. The bill will be over 10,000 for the meal, drinks, etc. Ain’t all that for the price, can cook better steak on my pit. Drinks are 30.00 apiece at those places. I drive so Wifey can have a good time, her company makes money out the ass. If they don’t make 40% off a job, they call it a bad job. They pay people right out of college 90,000, starting engineers 120,000.

Most managers are ex military, Wifey about the only exception. I’m about the only uneducated person there.
Oh wait, I drank a cocktail or 7 at Harry's Bar, Venice, Italy. No idea how much I dropped in there. this was '95?

It's a long story but I spent some time in Italy. Navy sent us to Aviano Air Base, I think pugs was there at some point too.

some fine eating at hole in the wall back country Italian restaurants. But Harry's is where Humphrey Bogart hung out.

Trying to impress a woman, I took her to the Edgewater in Seattle...what a fiasco, never again, my embarrassing ignorance of manners and protocol for fine dining, snooty waiters, overpriced food. A good life lesson, I never tried to be something I wasn't again.

Ruths Chris is crazy expensive and drowns steaks in butter.

Ferraro's in Vegas is outstanding. Osso buco.

Gallagher's not so much.

Back in the sales days, with a corporate expense account, of all the cc slips I signed by the must "push" place was when hosting the luxury suites at a NBA arenas.

I find fine dining to be absolutely miserable.
If the OP means POSH instead of what he wrote...

Lappi Ravintola in Helsinki Finland- reindeer steak

Dinner with relatives when I was a kid. Not a fancy joint. With both families, it was nine people. They didn't even have enough cash for their own meal. Mom and dad covered the bill with money they could ill afford to spend.

No offer to repay...no apology...nothing. It was tight...real tight for a few weeks at home. Us kids didn't know the exact dollar amount, but we did know the amount of stress if put on our family.

Same relatives wanted to get together a few years later. Mom told them we were "busy". They never called except when they needed something. Mom told them not to call anymore.

IHOP or Hardees.
Some fancy steak house in downtown Nashville.

Had my daughter and her friend at a national convention down there and we were just looking for something to eat real quick because they had to get back to the convention.

They got mac an cheese and I ordered stuffed mushrooms thinking they were $11 on the menu. Turns out they were $38 and let me tell you they were worth every penny!
Waffle House.
The Maisonette, downtown Cincinnati. Longest running Mobil 5 star awards ever. Had a friend take me there for lunch as a send off when I transferred to a new gig. Stuff appeared and disappeared off the table without noticing anyone ever coming close to us. Glasses were magically refilled when they neared the halfway mark. A simple lunch for two, no alcohol, was north of $100 in 1988. Plus a generous gratuity...

Emerial's place down in New Orleans.

It was darn good but i was glad i had a loan when the bill came.

Also the place had a jacket and tie rule but they had a rack that you could use.

Goat cheese salad was another first.
Some place called Christopher’s in SLC. Went after some teacher training. Friggin tip for 10 of us was $120! Waiter had never heard of iced tea!!!

There was some swank place, Doctor Gauger took our Explorer Troop on the way to Phillmount Scour Camp. in New Mexico.

There was a waiter that filled gasses up when they got half empty.

I had Walleye, Doc had a Chef's salad, he ate light, and lost a lot of weight on the trip.

Thanks again Doc!!

Daniel NYC for my wife's 50th. It was the swankiest, but not the best. Several places in Zone G in Bogota near the Hilton. Damn fine food and really good Colombian beer, and with the exchange rate it was a great deal. I have been lucky to travel the world on somebody else's nickel.

Probably one of those if 45 years ago.

Went to August a few weeks ago down there. Fantastic meal.

There used to be a small French restaurant near the quarter, fancy as all get out, hard to get into. It no longer exists. Wish I could remember the name. Closed down 8 or 10 years ago.
I don't know about that. If the ox is good, I can polish off a plate or two even if we all hate each other. So long as everyone isn't stabbing each other, I'll take the ox.
Did anyone mention Golden Coral?

Forgot about Galatoires or Gabrielle's. Both of those in the running.

The tie mandate largely gone now. But the jacket mandate remains. No shame in using a common coat with bourbon, turtle soup and cigar smoke staining it.
August in New Orleans. I felt like a turd in a punchbowl in there. My son was dating a girl who worked there and they wanted to take me some place special. I remember we had an appetizer called foie gras three ways. Actually I loved the place and the food and service was excellent. https://www.restaurantaugust.com/
Just for contrast, the next day we went to get a poboy at the Parkway Bakery & Tavern. https://parkwaypoorboys.com/ More my style.
That same son is getting married (different girl) in June and I have a feeling we will out-do August for the reception dinner.
President Hotel, Kowloon early 1969.

First evening we did not know the extent of their buffet. As we were leaving, we realized we had only made it through the salad bar. Conditioned for a couple days and came back to get into the main courses. First and only time I ever saw a whole 300 lb tuna as the center piece.

In my experience, anyway, limited menu is a good thing. Do what you do well. Don’t try to be all things to all people.

Here in Charleston, dining is almost a religion. There are great meals to be had of every type cuisine and a lot is world class. There are a few fine dining places we go to occasionally, where we end up dropping a couple of hundred bucks per person and it’s worth every penny.
https://www.langdonhall.ca/
Posh is subjective. Expensive? Had a sales meeting in Miami. 8 of us had dinner at some place on South Beach. An even 4 grand with tip. Had some 100 yr old Louis XIII at $150 a pop. Cocktails, apps, main, dessert, after dinner drinks, the works. Sort of pushed it to excess because the Boss said sky's the limit. Can't even remember what I ate. Sad.

One of the restaurants in the Fairmont Hotel in Banff Springs had a 7 course dinner that had a different wine with each course - that was around $500 for the wife and I. Nice, but not very memorable. Probably because I was pretty well geezed.

Had some good meals in NYC at Tavern on the Green, 21 Club, Rainbow Room, Le Cirque and others less known. The best was a small joint in Little Italy. I would crawl over broken glass to go there again. Lots of Wiseguys because I'm assuming they "know" where the best food is. Chicago has some nice places too. Ate Sunday brunch at Antoine's in NOLA. Flambé tableside, turtle soup, crepes, good stuff. Pricey though. Good food there - Emeril's and Commander's Palace should be on everyone's list.

Don't do much of this anymore except for special occasions with the missus. I prefer to find out of the way dives that have great tasting food. Ask the locals, better yet, ask a cop - they usually know. The key is to get the same recommendation from two different people.
6 of us went to some place in Milwaukee, be about '98?. 1700 bill.

Hostess was the one and only that caught me when I gave my name. I ALWAYS use "Abe Froman". She looked at me and goes "The sausage king of Chicago?"

That's me!

More recently, local place here in GB. 2 steaks, 4 drinks, 150.00

Not horrible but above my norm.

It went on the business credit card at the time and the tip was 25% so $625ish. Hey it was Vegas baby👍
I’ve been disappointed by the push dinning places I’ve been to, as well as the posh dining joints as well. 😂

My in-laws are coo coo for Cocoa Puffs over Ruth’s Chris’. They seek that out when they travel.

I went to one and left me notably unimpressed. Probably the last one I’ll go to. For steak, I’ve had better in folding chairs over an open fire in camp.

Did go to a place in Birmingham, AL that was reco’d here a few years ago. A bit snooty, but very good food. That was the first time I had sweet breads. Just wonderful.
Alfredo in Rome, Italy.Have had better food in Oakland mills Iowa.
Metropolitan Grill in Seattle or the Intercontinental Hotel in Frankfurt.
Won a sales contest and the company sent each of the top agents in their district to Italy for two weeks. We stayed at the Excelsior Hotel which was pretty plush but the highlight of the trip was meal at a mansion built on the grounds of one of Emperor Nero’s castles. I have no idea what the meal may have cost, but it was black tie and tails all the way. Each person was served by their own waiter or waitress, and you dare not set your fork down or the plate and silverware was whisked away and another dish replaced it. A different wine with each course and there were seven courses. The pastas all tasted like Chef-Boy-R-Dee. My mother wouldn’t have served the roasted veal main dish to the dogs. Had some good brandy and somebody gave me a Cuban cigar...which was good.

ironbender;
Good evening to you my friend, I hope the day was a good one for you and your fine family.

It's interesting to read what you and our fellow 'Fire compatriots have experienced in terms of memorable meals.

As far as high end eating, I recall dimly eating at what had to be one of the if not the most expensive place in Nairobi very early in January 1976. It had marble floors and several wait staff for each table - that I recall.

I was nervous about the flight home and a few other things, so being wired that way for much of my life, I ended up tossing supper into the immaculately clean toilet there before leaving.

It's ironic too that when we spent a couple days in San Antonio a couple springs back, one evening on the River Walk we spent somewhere around $250 for 4 of us - two vegetarians too so no big steak dinners all around. The next night we found a place across the river where we all ate what everyone said was a much better meal for less than $40. Funny how that goes sometimes, isn't it?

By far and away the best steak I've had was from an 18 month old steer that I'd personally branded for my rancher buddy. He had a way of finishing with not much grain somehow and between that and the folks who cut and aged it - well it was memorable ironbender - let's just say after a lifetime of being a diverse carnivore those steaks stand out. grin

All the very best to you all.

Dwayne
L'Auberge du Pont de Collonges in Lyon France.
Paul Bocuse was the chef and it was 3 Michelin star rated.
The sea bass with white sauce was excellent.

Honestly though if you want good food go to Crete, the Greek island. Almost every taverna just kills it. And it’s reasonably priced.
The Hall of Great Battles, Versailles Palace, France.

Multi course meal served by uniformed waiters wearing wigs.

French horns blaring as our busses pulled up.

Gov. of LA chartered two 747's to take a few friends over for a celebration.

I told my wife not to expect an encore.

But, I do take her to Paris every year. We stay over in Paris, TX on the way to Wichita to visit her folks.

And yep, those Texicans do have an Eiffel tower, theirs wtih a gaudy red hat on top. Pure class... grin

31 years ago last month at the Crystal Palace Casino in Nassau on our Honeymoon . Can’t remember the name but it was the first time my bride and I had flown , much less out of the USA for both of of us country kids.
Tie and jacket required and my new wife in a smoking hot dress I still remember....we asked someone to take a picture of us outside and still have it. $140 with tip . She was 21 and I was 26 .
About 10 years ago I was leading a team to procure some cutting edge (at the time) LTE location technology.

We found ourselves in Stockholm, Sweden for a week. The company we were checking out took us on a private, five hour, 5-star dinner cruise through the Stockholm inner archipelago. The VP of the company we were doing due diligence on is a die hard hockey fan. He was pointing out various retired NHL greats' mansions on the hilltops overlooking the archipelago.

The food was amazing, the views and weather were even MORE amazing.

And, don't bother with the sorry, worn our coffee replies. After dinner drinks were top shelf aquavit, the defacto national spirit in those parts.

Richard and Judy's place in Wabigoon, Ontario. Food was good, and we got to take the left overs home. The shelty wasn't overly impressed with our visit. smile
Thanks Keith!!! We need to do that again some day!!!

Your place warn't so bead neither!!!!!!!!
French Laundry. Before and after. First time was in the early 80's when it was just local joint. Several times in the 90's after Keller bought it. Never after 2000 the prices just got stupid.
It was a good day indeed, Dwayne. Highest temps since August! We topped out around 73*.
That kind of heat is intolerable! 😆
The Riverview Lodge in Dryden, and The Golden Ox in Kansas City are both nice places.
Mama's Fish House on Maui, first meal there back in 05 run us $375 for 2, which is a lot of bank for us but it was worth every penny.
The Fior D'Italia in San Francisco. I took my prom date there. Full dinner for two, $250.00 plus tip. That was back in 1957. I wonder if that place is still in business. Prom dates were usually taken to Bimbo's 365 Club. Prices were a little more reasonable. Food was good in both places. My favorite place to take a date back the was a little hole in the wall Italian place called Pete's. It was kind of like the place where Micheal Corleone whacked two guys, then split for parts unknown. It had small booths with candle light and curtains for privacy. A really neat place to take a date and the food was outstanding with very reasonable prices. I left San Francisco in 1968 never to return. I wonder if those places even exist anymore?
I liked the Golden OX in KC but the last time I was there I heard it had closed down. That's a shame as they served one hell of a fine steak. These days if I want a decent steak at a reasonable price I go to Cattle Town here in Tucson. Nice place to take a date should I get lucky.

Never been to anywhere nice enough to have to wear a coat and tie.

I’m too cheap i guess.

I’m happy with a Tx roadhouse steak.

Damnation, that is nearly 2400 bucks in today's money. I hope you got laid like a porn star! grin
I've had some incredible meals in some fantastic places but nothing that would be considered "posh".

Bucket list meal would be a perfectly cooked steak at The Oak Room in NYC. If I don't make it, it's going in my will that some of my ashes be spread at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island by my kids to be followed by that meal for them.
Posh being subjective, the most posh was Lawry's in Chicago.
It was housed in the old McCormick mansion.

Used to be many posh restaurants, unfortunately few passed the test of time.
Back in the 50's, some speaker at a commencement, spent a lot, of time predicting the future would be, "Fine Dinning."

Chrystal goblets, fine china, linen tablecloths, and napkins.

I wonder if he ever went to McDonalds? laugh

Fior d'Italia is long gone, sadly. Bimbo's is still there.

A lot of the old Italian restaurants have closed in the North Beach area. They were usually a good value for the $$$. But that traditional dining style went out of fashion.
Lots of very good restaurants have taken their place.

It was a very busy place on a Thanksgiving weekend Sunday Mike.

He was literally pushing, and shoving people into the bar to wait, so more people could get in the main door.

We should have left, telling him what we thought on our way out.
Gaido's Seafood Restaurant in Galveston TX. It’s been YEARS since I’ve been there, though.

And the Frisco Country Club in Frisco, TX. Saw Ross Perot jr in their while we were eating.
My career brought a lot of great food in a number of places but the best is the dinner my youngest son and I have when we attend the Dallas Safari Club show. It's at Bob's Steak and Chop House right there near the show. The food and drinks are always great. We missed 2021 due to COVID cancellation but will be there in 2022 which will mark seven years I believe.

Thank you ! This thread just shows I am right about most people.

I wood rather sit around a fire with good friends drinking Labatt Blue and cooking some walleye , than ever pretend that I'm a rich and have the class of an ass that's paying for dinner. I will stick to good friends with a six pack and a bird dog, over all of the over priced arrogantly assed folks the those big cities so wholly deserve.

Wearing a tie and tails, to eat snails has no place in my world, I would much rather kill it ,clean it and grill it over a fire with a few good friends that love the life we live, than to pretend I need anything more.

My level of classlessness, is limited to not drinking beer that comes in cans, unless of course, that's all the cold beer we have !
Went to a conference at the Greenbriar in WV. Old boy giving a talk warned everyone it was the only place he'd eaten, where the waiter told him he was using the wrong fork.

I remember asking my grand pap when I was young about such etiquette. He said, "I figure if I'm paying for it, I'll eat it however I want."

My family used to go there a long time ago (40+ years) and it was really nice. In the 1990's a friend (who grew up in Galveston) told me it just wasn't the same any more. Of course that report is over twenty years old so it may be great again.
Of course, i skipped the, "L', I meant ,"Plush".

That's funny right there.

My family used to go there a long time ago (40+ years) and it was really nice. In the 1990's a friend (who grew up in Galveston) told me it just wasn't the same any more. Of course that report is over twenty years old so it may be great again.

Yep. Probably 40 years since I’ve been there. On my first honeymoon at age 21.
The post about having individual servers reminded me of another one.
Our oldest son went to the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY. They have 5 restaurants on campus which are run by the students. We went to the French restaurant, Escoffier (sp?) one time and it was great. The 5 of us each had our own server. The girl serving my wife was almost begging someone to order a flambe' for dessert so she could make it. It turned out great. Those kids are really hard workers.
When we were kids, my folks took us to a place in Minneapolis called "Boston Sea Party". It was an upscale seafood restaurant that had just about everything that comes out of the ocean --- shrimp, scallops, several different kinds of crab legs, oysters, mussels, clams, all kinds of fish, and a few different seafood chowders. They had several buffet lines, with the seafood items cooked in a wide variety of ways...deep fried, pan-fried, broiled, steamed, seared, chilled, and even raw. Everything was really nice...think Fogo de Chao, but with seafood.

Along with the buffet, my mom ordered a whole lobster. She kept trying to get us kids to try it, but I wasn't going to be distracted from the king crab legs, and my brother and sister were working on their own plates. After a few of my mother's unanswered requests to try the lobster, Dad leaned over and said, "It's all right, Dear. For $20 a pound, they don't have to like it."
Don't know the name but there was a restaurant beside the Sinclar truck stop in Flagstaff. 3/4 way across the country. Busting our asses to meet
delivery in a 55mph gutless truck, we stopped there for fuel. Hadnt showered in a couple days, and we walked over for a bite.

Classical music, fancy tablecloths, nice silver.....
They seated our grungy asses in the back....corner.
While it's probably not the poshest place, it at least has a good story.

La Maisonette in downtown Cincinnati was a 5-star French restaurant. I was in there every once in a while. It was . . . okay by my tastes. They had a downstairs rathskeller called La Normandie that was far more to my liking.

I buddy John and I had a mutual friend that was a high-end consultant to Procter and Gamble. The corporate HQ was just down the street. When he would come into town he was an expense account, so he ate at La Maisonette every night. He told us after one particularly hard day he showed up to dinner. The maitre d' asked him how things were going.

"Right now, " he replied. "I'd just be happy to hit McDonalds and go to bed."

A little while later, the waiter came out with a Big Mac and fries on a plate. They charged him $45 for "bœuf haché à la maison ."
An even tie between The Salt at Ritz Carlton , Amelia island and The Inn at Biltmore, Ashville NC.
My wife and I newly married just out of college accepted teaching jobs in Miami.(1982) Both of us from tiny towns. Other than rent/utilities we had no bills. Our hobby...eating out. Some friends told us to go eat at the Fountain Bleau/Doral on Miami Beach. First red flag no visible place to park. Valet. Walk in Lobby is stunning.Met just inside by a person offering assistance.told him the restaurant. He said 5th floor. The elevator opened directly into the restaurant. People dressed richly. My senses were starting heat up. Sat us, handed us a menu with no prices. When the waiter came back I asked about prices...He said $85 no matter what you ordered. My wife/I maid $13,000 each a year as 1st year teachers. I told him teacher friends had eaten here and recommended it. He said go to the 3rd floor coffee shop. Same kitchen for both/food the same and prices less. We went to the 3rd floor looked similar to a Dennys/Shoneys. Food good. Prices in line.

Spent a Christmas in Miami with a long lost relative and a girlfriend many years ago. Through a connection, ended up at Doral club for Christmas day buffet. It was one of those Miami late 80's cocaine and Medicare fraud-fueled excess things. Lots of Ferrari and Lamborghinis parked out front. Over the top from one end to the other. I was particularly found of the selection of oysters on the half shell and the bloody Mary bar. The 3-4 lamb selections were also delicious.
Villa d'Este (spelling?) on Lake Como in northern Italy. Lunch for two 320 Euros (about $400) without any liquor. Delicious.
Do not believe there is a place in the world that can rival my Mamma's kitchen.
As a kid, many decades ago, the Friendship House in Gulfport was a treat. Right there on the Gulf with some of the best seafood.

But, it's no longer there, Too many hurricanes; much has changed and not for the better.

Back in the '50's, that was a high end area with mansions lining Beach Boulevard for miles..

Not now...

You know I would have to check in just to see what push dinning was...
Wabigoon dgaf about spelling. grin
I think it was called The Maxwell House in Mexico city. Perty fancy for a Texas cowboy in 1976.

I noticed that.

If spelling Nazis were real he would have been in the gas chamber a long time ago...
My brother-in-law had a joke about a traveling salesman, that could not spell, and had horrible grammar.

His first letter back to the office drew great derision. Something like, I don wentan sod x number of units.

After many such letters, the boss put out a memo to all.

Yus poplo go ut ad do kek he doon. laugh
White Castle in Indianapolis, yum!
I avoid those places like the plague.

It’s been years since I went to Gaidos in Galveston. Great food. I had forgotten about that place.

The Wild Game Room in the Pierre Hotel, NYC. The old Petroleum Club in Houston was pretty cool as well.
