Hardy plank lap, same color. Primer in the paint or no? Thanks
I have had good luck with Behr Premium

Sherwin-Williams Duration

Judman;
Good afternoon, I hope it's cooled off a bit in your part of the world and you and your fine family are well.

The hardy plank we used up here was always primed when it came from the factory.

Usually you should not have to prime a quality paint again, but a light sanding after a good wash can't hurt anything as it'll loosen off any residual scale and give a wee bit more surface.

As far as paint types available south of the medicine line, sorry, I'm not sure what is available.

Ours up here has pretty much all gone to latex based, but the better stuff - which means $50-$60/4 liters - applies nicely, sticks well and seems to last quite well in the Okanagan sun.

I've used Behr, Sico and Olympic in the last few years up here and been happy with the result, but again am not sure what you folks have down there.

Hope that was useful to you or someone out there.

Good luck with the project and all the best.

Dwayne
Used Sherwin williams duration on my Fiber cement when I added on/renovated in 2010. Probably repaint this year but it really doesn’t look bad yet. We use either Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore 99% of the time on our projects, mostly because of availability in our area.

IMHO, make sure it’s an acrylic latex. Sherwin williams Superpaint is their top of the line I believe and would be a great choice. I’m a GC though, not a painting contractor specifically.
Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams here also.
Painted the house 11yrs ago, still looks good.

Duration is a “higher grade” than Superpaint, and I think “Emerald” is SW’s highest.

Lotsa painters like the Superpaint better than Duration, though, because the Duration is like painting with pancake batter.

I put some Duration on a deer stand about 7 years ago (out in full sun). It has held up pretty well, but don’t know that it’s THAT much better than Superpaint.

If you’re doing a LARGE job (not just eaves/fascia board), “ease of application” CAN be a big deal...

Bud
Sherwin Williams Duration is where I would go. If the existing paint is solid should be no reason to prime. A good wash and your good to go.
If you want to step up Sherwin Williams Emerald Rain is probably the best you can buy right now. Good luck with your project.

There's a reason they can make a living just selling paint.....

Duration in darker colors does not hold up as well as it does in lighter colors despite their vinyl safe pigment system, particularly on southern exposures.

Mine is a darker green, and funny enough the south facing wall wore much faster than the rest of the house. Main reason I’m debating painting this year.
Tin.
We went with SW Emerald last time. Best stuff we’ve ever used.

In my experience the darker colors tend to oxidize (they get chalky and lose their sheen) with UV exposure. Once the coating begins to oxidize, it will no longer stand up to even gentle washing. While once a great proponent of Duration, I'm no longer convinced the juice is worth the squeeze. It's a difficult product to apply and expensive.
We don’t have a lot of choices here so we use Sherwin-Williams paints. It’s either that or Valspar from Lowe’s so it’s Sherwin-Williams.
For exterior, we generally use the Superpaint and I’ve grown to like it. It’s pretty good stuff. Painted some today as a matter of fact.
Another lumber yard in town carries Porter but they won’t cut us any deals.
I really like Porter paints though. Always had good luck with them. Their old Silken Touch line was some of the best paint I’ve ever painted and some of the most expensive too.
Used porter on interiors years ago and was always a fan. We used Devoe waterborne for years but the shop that carried it closed.
how does duration compare to A100
My Brother is a paint Contractor
I asked him this question about a year ago.
He told me to get the solid covering stains
it is about the only thing he uses any more.

In 36 years of my having a driver’s license I might have seen one stabbin cabin parked at the Sherwin Williams store here in town. I don’t know how they stay open.

I get my paint mixed at the walmart or Lowes

If it’s something serious for my personal home, I go to Home Depot and get the Behr brands

There’s another place where the black guy painters go, it’s the Porter Paints. lol

Solid stain was invented for the applicator.

Seen lots of guys use A100 for the INTERIOR. It’s a decent paint for that. For EXTERIOR, there are plenty of other paints that blow it out of the water.

It’s pretty easy to get by with cheap/mid-grade INSIDE (assuming you stick with light colors and satin/eggshell). You do cheap paint with DARK colors and FLAT, and the cheap stuff looks “cheap”. For EXTERIOR, spend an extra $10-$15 a gallon, and at least get Superpaint...

Also, based on my experience with Duration, I wouldn’t use it on trim. It’s hard to apply, thick (kills detail), and feels “rubbery” (never seems to get “hard”)....
