Minnesota DNR and Legislature dragging their feet on establishing a Wolf season. This will give the anti-hunters time to take this up in the court system.

Minnesota DNR: No wolf season until 2022 at soonest

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said Wednesday it won’t consider holding a wolf hunting or trapping season until 2022 at the earliest.

The agency said in a statement that it’s taking longer than expected to update its 20-year-old wolf management plan, and it’s now expected to be done by March.

“We will use our updated plan as we determine whether and how to use various management tools to ensure continuation of a healthy and sustainable wolf population in Minnesota,” the statement said. “Consideration of whether to hold hunting or trapping seasons will be guided by the updated plan.”

Then-President Donald Trump’s administration in November ended Endangered Species Act protections for gray wolves in most of the United States, leaving states and tribes in charge of overseeing the animals. Minnesota held wolf seasons from 2012-14 until courts blocked them.

Some states moved quickly to liberalize hunting and trapping rules. In Wisconsin, a weeklong season was quickly implemented and then cut short early after hunters and trappers killed nearly double the number of wolves the state had allotted. Bills introduced this year in the Minnesota Legislature would have directed the DNR to hold a wolf season in 2021, but they weren’t included in a final environment funding bill.

The Center for Biological Diversity praised Minnesota for moving deliberately. Collette Adkins, the Arizona-based group’s carnivore conservation director, said the state had “wisely prioritized first updating the management plan to reflect new science and the values of all Minnesotans.”

Carnivore conservation director? Sadly, that's a job with a paycheck. Psht.

The liberal, treehuggers in Minnesota will no doubt continue to fight the pro management plan.

DNR has been dragging its feet since the last two seasons we had years ago. It won’t happen.
The wolves have eaten themselves out of house and home. Moose are gone and deer herd so depleted the wolf pack sizes are dropping.
Coyotes are moving back in which is another indicator that the wolves are thinning down. This natural depletion of wolves is what the state is stalling for so they do not have to deal with the PR of a wolf hunt.
Deer herd depleted also works well for the state and DNR by way of fewer hunters, fewer guns.

It's amazing that states are reeling from the bad decision to introduce wolves, and now colorado is introducing wolves.

We've been told for years that the woofie number stays steady at roughly 3000 to 3200 wolves. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that the number suddenly drops if not plummets to allow the woofies to continue to do their thing, which as stated above is to wipe out everything living. The real numbers are pegged at somewhere between 6 to 10 thousand. No one really knows for sure. Regardless, there ain't no shortage.

We'll never have another moose season, and we may see the day when there are no moose in the state. Wildlife biologists/MN DNR blame the moose decline on everything but the woofies. Typical of this state. We ain't got no woofie problem. S S S.

You hit the nail on the head. How often have we heard guns are for hunting only?

Not sure what part of MN you are referring to, but the Arrowhead and North Central are chucked full of both Whitetails and Wolves, yes the moose are low, but I manage to see a couple every Deer Season.

The Whitetail population is indeed harmed by the wolves, but by no means is it even close to being depleted.

Just taking a drive in Greater MN and you will see dozens of dead Whitetails all over the side of the roads. In some areas they are so plentiful, the DNR offers early season hunts and "Bonus" tags sometime up to as many as 5.

Depleted, NO, Damaged, For Sure.

Just remember if you are in the MN Whitetail woods, the Timber Wolfe is no longer Federally Protected, I'm just sayin.

6-10 might even be on the low side. I know people that monitor the Packs.

We have been lied to by our Government regarding the actual numbers since the first day the Wolf was listed as "endangered".

I'm not sure why, but the tribes have been very supportive of the woofs; even spending some of their casino money to lobby for them in the past. The DNR usually runs scared whenever the tribes get involved because they know the legal system will back the tribes.

The moose situation is almost comical. They have recently moved some wolves to Isle Royal to keep the moose population in check.
