You charcoal grillers out there in Campfire land.
What are your sources for your favorite lump charcoal. I've been having bad luck in our rural area, last couple of bags of mesquite lump, from Mexico of course, have not been very good. Lots of "shake" in the bottom and even some rocks.
Would like some links as it seems I can't find the good stuff locally. Kingsford and some off brand briquets mostly. I like the lump.
So, urgent request so I can get some ordered, I'm about out now and have a freezer full of goodies to cook.
I like B and B and Royal Oak.
I believe Royal Oak is made in the US.....but is harder to find.
Websturant store would be a place to order from.
Ace Hardware too.
Strictly kingsford here. Not a charcoal snob though.
Hell we use a gas grill 4 times a week.
B&B is good stuff. I get it at home depot.
Smart and final the brown bag Mexican mesquite stuff. Agree too much shake.
Geno, I am not a guru but this stuff is good.
This batch was delivered today. Used to order it ship to store to the local lumberyard but they leave it out on the pallet and don't call when it shows up. Poor tracking, etc.., that and I might not be around when they are actually open to pick it up so I just order it.
I make my own. It’s not hard.
i use regular kingsford and add wood chunks if i want a little smoke. 40 lbs for 10 bucks on sale.
Sammo,
from whom does a guru like you order it from? (don't be shy, it's OK to be a guru, especially on the internet)
crittergitter, thanks, I'll look the next time I'm in the Big Town up the road. They have one of those HD things there.
ajckmountain, I'm a charcoal snob...............what's it to you Bub?
Jim, I'll check our local Ace, but I don't think they carry snobby type charcoal. Just briquets. Which to me are like chopped, pressed, and formed meat. OK in a pinch, but I'd rather have a real hunk of meat................and charcoal.
I make my own. It’s not hard.
I'd do the same if I lived where there was some hardwoods. Not many around, have to drive aways toward the coast.
I like B and B and Royal Oak.
'Yer battin' .500 !!
Naked whiz, they’ve been reviewing for years and are spot on.

You fugkers make the simplest [bleep] hard.
Walmart carries lump Royal Oak in several different sizes...

3 clicks and 3 days later I gots 70lbs of lump at the front door.

3 dollars and 3 minutes later, I had a bag of kingsford in the Weber grilling ballparks. With Ketchup. Yes bitches, ketchup. Suck it! LOL!

100 miles away. Maybe I'll look at their website.
But, I think I have them on my version of the Official Campfire Boycott list. No humans working the front end registers up there. Must have eliminated 50 jobs, even though they were part time, someone was working.
Very sick,
Honestly, ketchup, or even catsup, on a hot dog?
That would certainly clash with the sauerkraut.
At least he didn't say the M....... W.... word.
Of all places, the DG had royal oak lump.
Bunch of smaller pieces. Didn’t burn well. But got me out a bind on a Sunday.
I get B&B at academy sports.

#Charcoallighterfluid
#GetmeaBudlight
LOL
I burn a lot of the Kingsford professional something or other.
Costco usually has a 2 bag bundle for about about 15 bucks. 30 or 40 pounds for under $20 ain't bad. I think it's noticeably better than the regular Kingsford as well.
That's actually not a terrible price.
I'll buy the Blue Bag briquettes or Royal Oak lump or briquettes, whatever is on sale.
Does not seem to make any difference to my smoker what-so-ever
I don’t think most of you know the difference between lump and briquettes

This. ^^^^

Walmart sell RO as well as another brand or two of lump.
Spend 35 bucks and get free shipping.
Go for it.
I don’t think most of you know the difference between lump and briquettes
Luddites !!!
The lot of them
😀
I get the big 2 bag set of Kingsford at Sam’s Club. I always start a good oak & sometimes pecan / hickory kindling fire on the Weber Grill. After a good coal bed I throw on the charcoal.
I like B and B and Royal Oak.

This^. If I'm at Walmart, it's Royal Oak. If at the farm store, it's usually B&B. You'll find rocks even in primo stuff, time-to-time.
There used to be a big Royal Oak factory in Branson.
That's actually not a terrible price.
And the stuffs lasts a long time. It's a hobby, not like I'm burning through 5 or 50lbs a day.
No sparks and chit flying around. Not much ash.
I tried a bag of Fogo super duper premium and that stuff pops, not to mention way more shake.

After seeds, nawgga be scrapin resin ouwt all the bowls.
Kind of like in the Bible, Elijah say, bring thee all thy vessels.
Never used the interwebs for charcoal. The local hardware store is high priced but usually has 3-4 varieties of lump. Their hours suck, but like supporting them.
Anyone tried this stuff? It's American even and has an excellent review on that website SandBilly provided.

The popping and sparking is annoying, when using a propane torch. I've been using mesquite lump from WINCO (don't recall the brand), some Cowboy stuff, and B&B. I haven't noticed a difference between those three. They all spark and pop, provide similar flavor, and suck for consistent charcoal size. Giant pieces, plus slivers and dust.
I've thought about that South American lump, and should just try the Jealous Devil. Does it provide flavor like mesquite or more neutral? I have no idea what the South American hardwoods such as eucalyptus are like for cooking.
I would say it is pretty neutral.
If I'm grilling beef I always toss on some mesquite chunks with the Jealous Devil.
Or whatever smoke flavor you want.
Back when I worked at the solder factory, the casting operation would get lump charcoal in by ton. We used it as flux in the casting of alloys. They would get Royal Oak for $9 a bag. That was good stuff. I could just load up a few bags and pay petty cash.
I've dallied with making my own. The best lump I ever made was from chunks of red oak skid runners I use to get from work.
Nowadays, I'll just stop at Krogers and pick up a bag of Kingsford lump. It ain't the best, but it'll do.
I've tried a bunch of different ones in my bge, bge brand has always been consistent and done well, really liking Fogo though, its finally showing up in my neck of the woods. It's probably the best I've ever used but its pricey

^^^ This. I cook on my BGE 3-4 nights per week (or more at times). If it’s just burgers, fish or chicken, I just use any cheap lump although I do not like B&B. But if I splurge in a nice T-bone or ribeye or a brisket, I ONLY use BGE lump. Very consistent and burns long.
I would say it is pretty neutral.

Thanks. Seems versatile, being more neutral.
That's good to know.
Judging by the shape of the briquettes, they must make a bunch of "store" brands too.
That's actually not a terrible price.
$50.00 for a bag of charcoal??
I need to start raising cattle in MT!
Sheesh

There are no trees....only buffalo chips.
We gladly pay extra.
I usually am, you said briquettes. 😆
I guess I’m a charcoal snob. 😆
Rockwood is all I buy for home and competition. Royal Oak and Cowboy are pure schit. There is a reason all the big box stores sell that crap so cheap. It's smokey, and most of it has an off-putting smell. I damn near ruined a brand new BGE with Royal Oak. There was a piece of a plastic milk jug in the bag that I didn't see and it took me about two weeks of burning out the grill to get rid of the smell. Rockwood retails for around $25.00 for 20 lbs. around here, but we buy it by the pallet for about $16.00 per 20 lb. bag. Blue's Hog is also very good, but it is more expensive. Below is a link for an in depth review of pretty much all charcoal on the market.

Might as well just boil them dogs if that’s the treatment they get.

Yes. As I understand it...Royal Oak makes BGE lump.
In addition to that, IGA store brand looks entirely like Royal Oak briquettes.
Frontier, I believe is also Royal Oak.
Royal Oak must produce a lot of charcoal, lump and briquettes, for other customers.

My bad, I didn’t know they made briquettes, I’ve never seen them here. I was talking about lump. Could be wrong about them making BGE lump, they did 10 years ago.
Can he call us charcoal guys? Isn’t that racist?

Nothings racist if you’re white.

If they have excess production capacity, you can just about bet on it.

http://www.nakedwhiz.com/lumpindexpage.htm?bag Thanks for the info,
American made is why I'm leaning toward it over the Brazilian stuff.
Nothing wrong with a gal getting a Brazilian butt wax, but I'd rather support American companies when I can. And when it makes sense to.

Expensive fire.....lol
I used Rockwood over Christmas, I wasn’t impressed. After all the hype I thought I would like it better. Lots of small pieces in the bag I got. I know a lot of competition guys like it though. May have to try it again.

What’s the benefit over kingsford?
That's actually not a terrible price.
Jim, you were squawking a while back about the price of a good pair of socks, (15 bucks and lasts for years),
But now 50 for a bag of lump?
Confusing.
Cowboy brand lump, from sticks to stones to pallet wood, ya just never know what to expect,
BGE lump, 25 a bag, decent stuff Certainly cooks the burgers and steaks here just fine,
Oklahoma Joes, briquettes, 8.50 for 18 lbs,,,,,, Makes a fine meal.
Kingsford, legendary for simply getting the job done. Always availble in multiple locations. In most years past hit the Holiday sales, 2 for 1 pricing, grab a dozen bags at least, But haven't seen that sale 'round here in over a year......
50 for that Jealous Devil, I don't know man.

I only use lump in my BGE. Never seen Kingsford lump charcoal.
