Renegade50: Judas Priest - 17 inches of rain in one day? I can't believe that! And I too, sincerely, hope that Slumlord will be safe and his family as well. I can't imagine - 17" of rain??? Its been a tough couple of years around here. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy
They are like 35 miles south. Waverly has alot of creek valleys and ridge areas.
We really didnt get much rain to speak of here. Been raining on and off . Lot of the flooding around might be out in the county in hill and ridge terrian. People build homes and put up trailers in some iffy areas.

We had 10+ inches on the Cumberland plateau about a decade ago. Lots of drainages going into the river.
Bad floods down river from that one.
COE had worries about Wolf Creek dam IIRC letting go and really flooding Nashville and areas down river.
Opry mills mall was under water. All the fish at the bass pro shop aquarium got away. Thats how deep the water was. 🥴🥴🥴🥴
Grand daughter and family coming back from Smyrna today had to sit and wait for water to go down on I 40 to get back to Bells (volleyball tournament) 10 dead over 30 missing...
We were caught in it this afternoon kinda. I-40 was shutdown where a river was running across it at the 155 mile marker, 13 miles east of the Waverly exit. Once we got to our lease there wasn’t any flooding at all in Cherry Bottoms. 5 miles to our north is completely devastated. I have heard of 2 small children dying and 2 more are missing. I also heard where people said it was like a wall of water that came up in under a minute through town.
most rain i've seen here in a day was about 6 inches. the ground here is solid clay so my yard was like a river. couldn't imagine 17 inches. (thats what she said)

Welcome to our world. We dont get that kind of rain often, but it happens once in a while. Hurricanes dump that kind of rain on the east side quite often, but like this incident, it is a small area that gets the most rain. The difference is that where this incident was localized (17" in a small area and almost none around it), in the hurricanes, you usually have a large area (maybe a 100 miles across) getting a lot of rain also. Not as much as the small localized area, but still 6"-10" is common.
Gristle: Thank you for that update - that is indeed terrible news. I hope the missing folks can be found. And again hoping Slumlord and his family are safe and at high ground. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy
The geography around here between the Cumberland and Tennessee river system is kinda unique in ways. Goes up thru land between the lakes as high ground between the 2 rivers and kinda defines the watersheds down thru the state. And that storm front yesterday kinda tracked from NNW to SSE along the watershed slope side of the Tn river it seems.
I was watching the radar driving SE on 1 24 to that gun show in Manchester starting around 915 am. Rain storms along my route but 40 to 60 west along the track of that storm system it looked real bad.
Wasnt that bad along the cumberland side around here.
The EBS system was having alerts on TV late afternoon and thru the evening when I got back home. Was hearing distant long rolling thunder to the Wsw thruout the afternoon when I got back. People somewhere getting hit hard.
Me and slumlord will call each other at times during storms Bout 18 miles between us and talk track a storm so to speak. Image it off radar as its going down.
It is sad people lost their lives and property damage from it all.
I was in Montgomery County back in 2010 when the Cumberland River flooded , the worst flood in 80 years . It came up really high in Clarksville , flooded Riverside Drive and downtown .

It was epic here in Clarkvegas. Had to do alot of alternate routes to get around town. Same flood that hit nashville and the BPS fish tank.
I can only imagine what people have dealt with along the Mississippi River system over the ages. Waaaay worse than around here.
glad to hear the lords tomatoes didnt get washed away... anything good at the show?
Just the 7.62x39 ammo I traded 9mm and M855 for. Couldnt even find a AK sling. Only 150 tables , was hoping to see a different areas selection. Basically not much outta the norm and probably 65 70% same dudes selling their also out of the ones I normally see.
A show out of the normal ones I go too. I wont attend this one again.
Crazy, was at Smyrna this week, requested my travel even knowing I was leaving for vacation. Flew back Wed after weather delays flying into storm on PA side. I’m limited service since camping but seems I dodged a bullet. Probably would’ve been grounded in Smyrna if nothing else. Prayers for those with missing family. I can’t imagine that.
Creek did kiss the bank top here, it takes 10” of rain in 2-3 hours to cause me probs. We got about 8” here.
I have corrected the creek channel several times last few years here. Tripled the width of the channel and levied up the edge on our yard side. It’s helped.
All the loss of life was just west of us about 25 miles as the crow flies.
Last count 22 dead 50+ still missing
Babies ripped from parent’s arms, people in vehicles trying escape washed away.
That’s terrible stuff, NC got hit 5 years back and through a series of calamities I drove into it blind. Even took BILs family out to eat. Road was out in a low spot and he tried driving through then back tracked. College girl died the same spot just after, washed away in vehicle. I hadn’t heard of that before. Gotta be a rough way out.
Farm I hunted in NC we did the same with a creek. Took a few years but it was straightened through the property and cut in 8’. State frowns on it but waters gotta flow somehow. Dried creek most of the time. Place in PA was built on edge of cliffs with systems designed for extreme water issues, probably a few $100k. Crazy stuff like gutters running behind stone siding into central collection system below floating driveways. Aging out now 50 years later. Replacing more every year and it’s adding up.
Glad I’m not downhill though. Far side, the creek runs under the houses before emerging at confluence with gorge. No clue how that works when we get floods. Know there’s access doors in cellars and big stocked trout swim under. Bunch of tiered I beams hold trees back somewhat.
My neighbors griping about me giving away 8 cord of wood to another needy neighbor. Said it was stopping water or something. Gutter system ran out on far side of property. Turns out he bought lots from the estate. Either he didn’t know the drain daylighted there or he’s the one that collapsed them causing me to have to cut black top and change drains.
He wanted me to put blocks in too. My brother said the same about using a backhoe, even mini Excavator wouldn’t set them he didn’t think. I redirected all across my yard first in swales, regraded yard with tractor trailers of fill, screened compost top soil, 100 lbs of seed, etc. F ‘em, neighborhood peace cost me enough this year. I’m not putting big block walls on property line. Probably have to look at Pick and Carry chart to figure out how heavy you’d need to set. I’ve seen them set but big ones with massive cranes or at least 1-200 ton cranes. May have been overkill though.
Slumlord: Well thank goodness you are alive and dry! The pictures on TV this morning were very disturbing. Hope they find the missing folks alive. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

Going to be bad for a while there. Now it’s sweltering hot on top of the misery. No power or cell service still
Mrs slumlord is heading down there now with 1000 tooth brushes, 1000 mini tubes of Crest and some other toiletries. Suppose to meet up with some other relief orgs.
I’d love to haul my grill down there and cook hotdogs and burgers. Got two big Dr appts this week. I’ll find out what my church group is doing.
Slummy I was feeling for you. I have had difficulties all my life. But if you are eating that meat raw and not even cooked rare ...... POOOOOEY! I lost my compassion down to a more proper level. It would suck for me to even eat bologna. I can't even eat the deer summer sausage in my freezer. Son eats it but I don't know how. God Bless ya anyway. I feel for anyone with gut problems. Had mine since 1951. Be Well, RZ.
