We haven't been able to match up our schedules lately, but he did a solo backpack hunt in the Trinity Alps Wilderness and shot this nice Blacktail.
He posted this photo and text on his Facebook page and it made his old man proud...👍
Being a back country costal blacktail hunter consist of not knowing how many miles your legs will take you from the trail head or how long the water you carry will last, food seems to be the least of your concerns after the exertion it takes to get even close to these creatures your straps work there way into your shoulders and hips until they bottom out it seems .. the sooner you realize these animals are ghost in gods country the sooner you will begin to understand them. I am so Great full for all the winters and migrations this beautiful animal survived before I made the effort to live its life style for just a few days the marble mountains will always and forever be home to the toughest.
Congratulations to your son. Yessir, that's a really nice deer.
Great Blacktail. Congratulations to your son.
Awesome. Congrats to the young man.
That's a dandy Blacktail..
The kind of hunt memories are made of
Did well and he did not wait for the rut to kick in.
Congratulations, waiting for someone to say it was a miracle he killed anything with that Leupold scope.
I’d be very proud of him too!!!
That is a dandy blacktail buck. Congrats to Son of Salmonella.
"Ghosts of God's country" is a nice turn of phrase. Well done.
Congrats to your boy on a dandy buck!
Great blacktail - congrats to him.
Congrats to your son for the beautiful buck !
Beauty. That's a nice blacktail.
I tried hunting around Happy Camp. The stuff that wasn't straight up and down was covered in poison oak. I saw some does climb like a mountain goat right in front of us. If I didn't see it with my own eyes I wouldn't believe it.
Very nice buck, congrats to you and your son.
That's a beautiful buck and great write-up. You're right to be proud and I hope you get to hunt together again soon.
Nice buck to top a great hunt off with.
Salmon,
Where did you guys hunt near? I’ve hunted in the Ruth and Mad River area in the past and loved it. I have been in the Yolla Bolly and it is incredible country in there. Absolutely beautiful. Paradise for a foot hunter. The place where time forgot.
Well, it wasn’t perfect. I ran into a few ‘fields’ out there. I was a little concerned. But I didn’t have any trouble if I just minded my own business, which I did.
Yes, definitely - congratulations to your son. I'm sure the hunt will be remembered.
Very nice buck. Hunted the Marbles a few times. Beautiful and STEEP country!
Very nice trophy. Congratulations to your son on the hunt, and you for your pride.

As usual Sal I enjoy your posts but seeing you and your son getting a chance to get back together in the woods (or on the water) is extra nice. I know how, as our boys get older, work and girls occupy a lot of their time and it’s not always easy to coordinate our life with their busy life. I believe that a hallmark of good parenting is that as they do grow older and busier they still make the effort to get together with us, that they have such great memories of days the days gone by with the “old man” afield or afloat that they want to keep doing it. 👍. You’re doing it right my friend! From one old firefighter to the younger one that you’re rightfully proud of I wish you both many more years spent together in pursuit of great memories.
Nice buck, you said Trinity alps and his story said Marble mountains. The marble mountains are out my front window and the Trinitys are over the hill out my back door.
Congrats to your son! Dandy buck.
Ghosts of God’s country. I like that. 👍🏻
Good looking California buck! I used to hunt near Hayfork which is within the same region.
