HeeeHaaaw !



Well folks, progress is being made at the Beaver Compound as I worked steadily through the night getting the Ol Duck Boat, it’s real name is the “Scooby Sled” ready for the duck hunting opener this coming Saturday.

Those of you who have been following the historic endeavors of Beave getting back into the duck hunting business after a very long hiatus, know that I had the sled stuck in boat purgatory at the repair shop for 3 weeks. That’s 3 weeks of lost preparation time for me...Alas, one must push forward, adapt, and overcome...And that’s how I ended up with a gallon of oil based metal paint, a paint brush, roller, and 6 cans of spray paint in my paws, instead of a professionally done, camo vinyl wrap....HeeHaaw !

First things first...I needed a removable blind built on the sled. That’s where super duck and goose slayer member, JeffP came in. He txt’d me pictures of his duck boat with it’s blind frame that he fab’d out of aluminum conduit tubing and accessories...Beaver, following the road more traveled, I built a doppelgänger of Jeff’s frame....Actually, I recruited the talent of a retired builder and machinist, who are my neighbors to build it while I fetched beers, measured, and smashed conduit in the vise.

Time to throw some paint on the platform of duck death ~ I almost wish the boat was a brand new, $40k sled, just to listen to you all screaming about how I wrecked the looks of a new boat.

Prep work ? Yeah, whatever....I washed it with a Joy dishwashing soap, towel and air dry....Let’s paint the bitch !







I do have painters tape, and masking paper on hand. I don’t know why I didn’t use any of it. Well, yeah, I actually do. I didn’t want to take the 2 hours to mask it off, since I wasn’t going to shoot it with the sprayer. Free balling with a brush and roller, felt so right for my duck boat.

Looks good so far. I live on a bay on the south side of Lake Ontario. Lotsa marshes & various wetlands around and every year I get to see some of the latest in duck boat "decor". Everything from some first class stuff that looks like something out of an outdoor magazine to the little boat that was so overloaded with guys, gear, and the blind they built on top of it that they sank it in 8 ft. of water. Friend of mine that scuba dives went in after their shotguns and gear. They got everything back including the boat which then got nicknamed "The Submarine".

I'm looking for, and used to seeing around here, a 16' and they usually have 25-40 HP motors on them.
I would love to find one with the older 2-stroke 3-cyl 25 or 30 HP Yamaha.

Drew last choice of 5 units applied for.
Country was dry as a popcorn fart.
Hunted hard for 5 days.
Drank whiskey and smoked cigars with some great guys.
Fugged my truck up pretty good on some horrible roads.
Saw total of 12 deer, of which one was a shooter at 560 yards; passed.
Having memory backstrap for dinner.

That hunting ground looks pretty dry. But, everywhere looks dry to me compared to the Coast.

Once he’s done painting it they probably won’t. The brown is most likely a base coat with foliage to follow. Pretty typical in the boats I have seen done.

Back to reality....

I cut out two stencils from card board. I’m warming up the rattle cans of paint in the house. In a couple hours, it’s go time.

Footnote: This stencil work is the hardest part for Beav...If you recall the two rifle stocks I tried to spray out in camo? Both were a massive failure!

I’ll dig those pictures up later. I’m a little apprehensive about this ~ Time for a couple shots of Fireball Whiskey to calm the jitters.

PS. it's a fuggin duck boat, not a rifle stock. First trip it's getting mud and slime all over it, hopefully duck feathers and blood.

I'll sell you my 40 F with jet unit. Been to the dealer 2X, for a total of 1 month down time and missed moose season/ trip to remote cabin. Computer says it's fine. Actually driving says it isn't - chokes out. Computers don't lie, right- If the foggers can't fix the things, they should not be selling them...I may just go back to 2 strokes and probably not Yamaha. They should stick to snow machines and ATV.

I'm currently waiting for the dealer to call me to bring it in again "after they finish winterizing all the guide boats".

Probably never, I'm thinking.- boat's filling uo with leaves as we speak....I'm rethinking this "Yamaha is good" hype....

Or forget to take the boat off when launching.

I’m about done with this project...Got a few more stencils to lay on the floor, do some touch up with brown paint where my rattle can dripped.

I still need to get some grass. Been looking for something that is like grass mats instead of bundled strands.

It’s a good start, it should hunt ok for the mostly local birds on Saturday.

The inaugural voyage happened this morning...I played it a smidge safe by boating into the island right a shooting light. I hadn’t boated into the island in 22 years.

A lot was the same, somethings had changed, such as logs deposited in the channel after bad storms and mega high tides which gave them a new home. I found the area we used to hunt...Started dumping out decoys ~ I decided last night to only toss 24 ducks and 4 goose floaters. I knew that would be enough for the opener.

Drove the boat into a spot and anchored bow and stern, snugged up to the shore, squared away gear, loaded the Benelli, took a seat and made ducky sounds with the calls....Nothing ! Laffin

It’s 7:45AM and I don’t see any wings, and I’m not hearing anyone shooting. At 8AM the island behind me erupted with volleys of gunfire. Sounded like a small skirmishes popping off.

Then the birds started coming into my area...each time the birds would give me a hard look, they’d spin off, not going to a full commit. They’re seeing me!

Without a partial top, I was pretty exposed and getting busted easily, if the birds were swinging wide, which they were doing at first.

Couldn’t correct the problem out there...I just said “Today, it is, what it is”

I shot a limit consisting of teal, mallards, and a Scaups, I believe it was a Scaups . Unfortunately, I lost 2 drakes and a teal hen to the island brush. Now, I need a hunting dog....Really hard to locate downed birds in thick knee and higher brush of the island.

Here’s the only two pictures I took today, I guess for proof for Ren50. Plus a couple after finishing the blind last night.

That’s a good day. If you can find some fake grass they used to sell it will cover the boat a little better. Especially the edges. Hell it’s all trial and error. Ducks go where they want to go.

Most def need to break up them straight lines horizontal and verticle.
Even some dried branches and sticks stuck up in the bow till you get out their will work.
Zip tie em at angles to break up them straight lines above and on sides
Bale of hay in the boat, grab some and throw randomly on the branches like tinsel, it will help break those lines and give depth and shadow also.

Used to duck hunt 79 80 81 82.
We just built up a little speed and ran it 15 20ft into the catails on the inlet side of pushaw pond.
Other guys had netting rigs like your setup.
They used pre hunt harvested catails to break up the straight lines.


Glad my dog Sonya didnt work out well for duck hunting in 95 down here.

It's probably been about 5 years since I last went after the ducks. Southern Nevada isn't exactly a hot spot for waterfowl hunting, it's kind of hot and dry here for marshes.
I really got into it back in the late '70s through the '80s when I lived in SLC; there was fantastic duck hunting on the marshes surrounding the Great Salt Lake.
Occasionally when I look at the pile of waterfowling paraphernalia in the garage I wonder if I should pass it on to someone who would get more use out of it.

Remind me to relate to you the details of the tale of the wounded eider and the post-mortem. After a merry chase and deep diving evasion game that bull common eider somehow transformed into an arctic loon. Two of us on board just started out with 'NOOOOOOOOOOOO!' as with horror we witnessed the fellow who recently wounded the original bird shouldering his gun and cutting loose on the AL just as it surfaced in front of the bow. BTW, ALs are *super* rare in these parts.

The "rules" say prime with Zinc Cromate on bare aluminum... fugg that... I sling left over latex house paint on aluminum on a regular basis.

Blend my own camo colors with a bit of this and that... a 12 pack of the PBR brings out a really keen eye on mixing and blending...
