Pistachios. Bumper crop this year. They are a lot of work, I can see why you pay $10 a pound.
Husk 'em, let 'em dry for a day or two, then salt and roast.

When they are raw they taste a bit like edamame (soy beans).
The flavor really ramps up when you salt and roast them.

After husking probably about 15lb. of nuts in the shell.
I keep the tree pruned back pretty good or I would get a lot more.

Pistachios are sexual buggers, they come male and female. When I bought this place it had one male and three females. I took out two of the bearing females. Too many nuts!

Question for you:

Do blueberries naturally 'tree' if allowed to, or is it a specific variety that does so????

Pistachios are a bit too warm blooded for here. We seldom get down to 0 but 10 is too cold and we often get that.
Blueberries are another one that I'd like to grow but our soil and irrigation water are too alkaline.

Honestly not sure... we have blueberry operations down here that have been around for decades... I dig suckers and try to make plants... it is hard and maybe 20% successful (I do 100 to get 20 and only 1/2 of those actually thrive).

As for a specific variety... we tried a Rekas ... I was impressed with growth over 2-3 years (not really height, but a hearty plant. IIRC https://ediblelandscaping.com/ sells 23 different varieties. The tour we took was a bit liberal gay, but an older woman off doing labor work by herself steered me toward the Rekas... best advice from workers vs. PHDs kinda thing.

FYI... figs are SUPER EASY... I do about 250 in an hour or two... 200+ make it. Unusually 2' plus on height by fall. some get to 3'... I give them all away. Been doing it for years.

Posted By: Pappy348 Re: NUTS! - 10/17/21
I’m too old to futz with starting any nut trees. I did plant a couple native hazelnuts for the critters. No idea about their suitability for humans.

The Virginia State Arboretum is near here, and they have some other pistachio varieties that are used commercially in other countries, but not here. Those get pretty dang big.

I have heard farmers- wife's tails that after very hard years pecans. for instance, produce like crazy. If acorns are an indication then my yard is telling me this is gospel. In your experiences does the stress of a winter like we had here in Texas produce a bumper crops of all nuts?

I had 2 Pecan trees Young as the farmers would call them.
A year and a half ago I had to cut one down because it got infested with termites.
The Pecans I get are a small verity and my one dog loves to bring them into the house crack um and eat the nut leaving the shells for us to walk on. I have had 3 dogs now that love the things.

Our Local Parrots seem to get the majority of them.

I would love to try and grow other stuff but the heat here kills everything off.
Sucks not being able to grow stuff for our selves.

Cash tell me about your kiwis. I have a lot I bought that I’ve been thinking of planting some on. We have fairly mild winters here, maybe down in the teens for a day or two once a decade but mostly 40’s for an average temp. Summers are hot and humid but I assume they’ll stand the heat.

Do the kiwi berries taste similar to store bought kiwi fruit? All the hearty varieties I’ve read up on have been the berry type.

Cash, I don't think the nut seeds would do much for you. With all of the nuts that fall to the ground under the tree I've never seen one start a new plant. Starting from seed would also not give you any indication of the tree's sex and you need to have both male and female to produce nuts. If you're serious about trying pistachios I would look into buying them from an orchard supply that can guarantee what you're getting.

I'm sure weather patterns play a part. Also with the pistachios as the tree matures you get more production. When we moved here the trees were probably 5 years old and still very little production. Now the trees are about 20 years old and they really put out the nuts.
These also get to be very big trees if you don't prune them back, the male is about 1/3rd bigger than the female.
It has been interesting having something of a novelty tree for my area.

Rancher buddy farmed pecans for a few years. A serious crapshoot. If you could spray to keep the parasites off in time, and make sure everything around every trees was cleared of any debris (fallen limbs) you still had to pray you would have good nuts to fall. Shake the trees. Harvest pecans, run them through the cleaner which is very much like the I love Lucy episode with Lucy and Ethel on the chocolate candy assembly line. I was free labor. One year he did pretty good. At least we hauled and sold a good number of those 1500 pound bags - that you had to make sure didn't mold. Made more than enough to cover expense but not sure how much that equated to time and level of effort. The next year we could haul the entire load in the back of a pickup. Did give us a reason to shoot squirrels at his place.
Posted By: NVhntr Re: NUTS! - 10/19/21
I've got squirrels here too that clean things up after the harvest. They're ground squirrels thank goodness so I haven't seen them in the trees.

Thanks for the opinion...

That makes a whole lot of sense (same here with pecans... almost never see a tree from a seed).

Thanks also for the Pistachio tree propagation.

Looks like I have a 0% chance of success.

Regardless, very cool.
