I have a buffalo horn scoop that has been passed down in my family and I would like someone who knows their stuff to tell me what it's for and what tribe etc.

We believe this is where the native blood comes from in my family tree and things are a little fuzzy with the details.

I have some pics i can send if that helps.

Thanks
I watched Thunderheart on Netflix a few months ago. PM me and I'll try to answer your questions.
I nominate jackmountain for the most kind and helpful Beaver Award.
I’ve lost some money in a Choctaw casino.....
Oh lawd...

Him and Sharpsman are running neck in neck.
Must be à full moon lol
It is for eating or serving food, stewed type food. Can't tell which tribe without seeing how it is decorated and it likely isn't decorated if it was a daily use item and not for ceremonial use.
Puppy stew probably.

What no museums in Ohio? Surely some institution of higher learning in Ohio has a knowledgeable person. Here in Nebraska we can use the Indian reservations or State Historical Society.
So, an ancestor had sex with a buffalo, and the horn is from a great, great, great grandfather...or mother. And you want to know the name of the tribe the buffalo was from?

Do your ancestry DNA before you pursue any further. There is an epidemic of white folk wishing or thinking they are native only to find out they are native to Scotland.
How.

Already did ancestry. Says I am Scottish and Irish. Which I sort of knew. But ancestry also says if you have native blood they wouldn't know since the tribes denied them samples. So back to square one.

Never understood the attraction. No offense to NA’s, but they were victims to a superior race of people, technologically advanced and superior on every level.
The romantic notion of the Native American and his spiritual connection to the land is just Hollywood hype. White Europeans rolled in, kicked ass, took their land and made history. Trail of “tears” sums it up nicely.
No argument there. Just thought it would be cool to know more about my history.

Family lore is usually a lot better than the truth. Be careful what you wish for.

Nice job.
I ruined a family legend that we had “Cherokee” in us. Great great great grandma Robinson….. English. Northern European. Scottish. Irish. Germanic. Welsh. Scandinavian. Comes to a 100%. No unknown markers reported. 4-5 generations back would show up as something.

No NA in our line in spite of the family legend. My dads first cousins weren’t happy about it. They felt it important to be part NA. We’re all just really really white.

I don’t think any tribe of any color is gonna claim that one.
I don't care if I find out I am not native. Just curious. And if there is anything more important than the truth I sure dunno what it would be.

We have the horn scoop and a story that a relative was a missionary who married an Indian girl on a reservation.

Likely no NA blood in me as I believe she passed before any kids could be had.

They have plenty of NA DNA in there databases. They even have DNA from NA skeletons that are thousands of years old. Their DNA comes from the same ancestral source population so wether you are an Alaskan or Peruvian NA it will be picked up. But they may not be able to narrow down the tribe. Plus a lot of NA tribes are mixed since they stuffed a lot of the reservations with different tribes from different places.
Maybe that's what they were saying...I could have misunderstood what they meant.

I forgot about how NA’s and other indigenous retards conquered Europe and spread their beliefs through out….colonization was a gift to the Inferior cultures that we aided. Be thankful for our glorious presence.
Was told by my grandmother that her mother was half Blackfoot. My kids got me a DNA test a couple years back and I came back like 99% European. I did test in the high 90’s of those in the database for Neanderthal blood.

Was told that the markers for NA weren’t as defined as others but who the hell knows.
Yes. Thanks for your glorious presence.

The Corps of Discovery would likely agree.

I wonder how those Injuns felt about they and their lands being discovered? I mean, seeing as how they had been there for ages already. It's not like penicillin or Planet X after all.

I believe a good deal of them ended up in business with the white man.

The rest of them probably were pissed about the out of control property values.
There goes the neighborhood, eh?
I think the DNA tests for ancestral race are basically a con. I saw where they did tests with five different companies and they all came back different. It is all in their interpretation, not so much the science.

Look in the mirror, that will tell you most of what is relevant.
Credit where due, I'd like to toss an 'arigato' to JackMt., JC (the *other* JC), Geno, Morewood and Beav'. You boys evoked a few actual giggles.

BTW, I'm reasonably well-versed in first hand, historical First Nation cultural norms. Not surprising, since I've spent a fair amount of time (like 5 days) with these folks. OP, fire off any specific questions and I'll try to help. A little proof of my credentials:

Me too, at least one.

Wife was in the grocery store years ago when she had hair down past her waist. Long dark hair.

Old Mexican lady behind her points to her and says "la India, la India"

Even though her Mexican side has a bunch of Spanish in it, apparently there's enough Native in there some folks notice.
WTF is that contraption on that pistola? Sure looks to have ruined the lines and screwed up the balance.

And glad to be of service providing a chuckle or so. De Nada.

PS, I lived on a Rez once for well over a year. Didn't see no horn spoons though. Ate acorn stew, made a pair of their moccasins, and worked with a bunch of Wild Apaches though. Even learned a bit of their lingo.

This is true of so much scientific data now days. Either they interpret the data to support a foregone conclusion or they only record data that supports their foregone conclusion. Especially things like climate change and Wuhan Flu.

You know, maybe there is some suppression going on for political reasons. I don’t know. My sister has a different mother that is supposed to be native. I’ve met her maternal grandmother and others on her maternal side so I assumed it was true. They look like they could be. They have a darker complexion. Her grandmother had skin that looked like a white person who had a dark sun tan. Her test came back with no NA DNA at all and about 1% Pakistani.

My wife is supposed to have Lakota on her mother’s side. My wife’s grandmother was half. They know the ancestor. There are old photos of him and they have newspaper and other media he is in when he travelled in Old West shows. Despite the fact that he is clearly a documented relative, her cousins who have gotten DNA tests that share the same NA great grandfather have returned no NA DNA. They should be roughly 10-15% NA.

So it’s possible I guess that they are missing NA markers. They don’t pull your whole genome just look for certain markers. Or my wife had some shenanigans happen in her lineage resulting in her biological ancestors being different than the written family tree.
Yeah I think something doesn't add up. Possible if course that my NA ancestor (if she existed) did not contribute any DNA. As I understand it, just because you are related to someone it does not mean that your body used that particular DNA while forming.

Or something along those lines. I are not a scientist lol
No, but I do have Inuit carnal knowledge. It was a nice finish to a muskox hunt.
Haha!
How do you compliment an Inuit girl?……..

Kinda like the wetback situation, now, heh?? People and places have always been invaded by those they deem undesirables.
Just remember, Fauxcahantas had her mama's certification that she was a certifiable Cherokee!

All typical of S Texas Hispanics IIRC.

The flip side is the amount of American Indian ancestry correlates with the odds of type 2 adult-onset diabetes.
DNA won’t tell you a tribe so their submission or not makes no difference. The DNA doesn’t lie.

It's a good thing too.

You folks eat whales. Imagine how many buffalo it takes to make a whale.

You folks would have had access to them, they'd have been wiped out before ol' Bill Cody had a chance to get at 'em
Its hard to get them to run off a cliff when you are chasing them in a canoe.

Is that the world famous McD’s built over the interstate?
Yes, stay out of Walmart around the first of the month. Don’t borrow them anything. Assume their vehicles are uninsured.
Your horn scoop came from a mid-western tribe. It was probably used to scoop things. GD

No, it was a McDonalds on Sheridan Rd. And it's a true story. God damn van reminded me of a circus clown car, the number of people spilling out of it.

If you are a citizen of the United States the Seminoles are still at war with you. But I don't mind too much. Have you ever had fresh pumpkin fry bread and black coffee?
