It is very good.

There are several memoirs like this in audio book form. All of the eastern front. Great reads.

If I recall there was an event where the German soldiers were marching after having been in heavy combat in the crimea and one soldier lost his grip and bolted from the ranks and started raping a a local girl. The German officer went over and shot him on the spot.

The book is well worth reading.

I knew a couple of men who fought on the Eastern front. One on each side. It was not a place for the faint of heart.

Nice bit of history but the flowery language it is translated to spoils it

Back in 1981 I commuted into NYC from my town in northeast New Jersey. I got on the bus one rainy day and sat down next to a small older man. Out of the blue he started talking to me about how he had been a corporal in Paulus' Sixth Army in Stalingrad. He was one of the four or five thousand of 100,000 captured who survived. He didn't get home until 1955. I should have gotten his name and phone number. His story would have made a good book.

Along those lines, try reading Red Road from Stalingrad, a Siberian soldier's account of his time on the eastern front during the Great Patriotic War, as the Russians called it. Four out of five Germans killed were killed on the eastern front. I think it is also available on YouTube.

I hate to think what would've happened if Hitler had invaded Britton and not invaded Russia.

Visited the war museum in Moscow. Quite an eye opener and insight from the Russian point of view. Ironically reference or mention of Stalin was no where to be seen. They finally figured him out .

If this is the same episode in the war I read the account that the girl, by accounts very pretty, had waved to some in the column and wished them good luck. It was right after that the attempted rape occurred. They left him by the side of the rode with his pants down as a reminder to others.
