Bet you never got no rat like this in a trap though. When I took it out I saw a hole on its neck? What the heck? Maybe a fly larvae ate its way out? Gastric ulcer all the way through esophagus to the outside? Clean wound and healed all the way around. I just took pics and set it out for the birds to eat.
The hole in the neck could be from a bot fly larva, a warble. I've seen a lot of them on cattle and horses, usually on their backs. However I have caught 2 mice and a cottontail rabbit with these larva attached. After the animal dies the larva emerge and wiggle away. (Hammer usually stops them.)
We’ve had a squirrel this year that has had three or four bottfly warbles on his back and shoulders. He also had a healed sore like that just in front of the right shoulder. They look pretty gross but normally don’t cause any permanent injury. Normally by the time squirrel season comes around the larva have burrowed their way out. We nicknamed the one in our back yard Quasimodo.
