I don't think that even the people that play it understand it.

It is a very simple game.

There are two teams. They toss to see who'll go in first. The side that is in first sits out, while two batsmen go out. They stay in until one of them gets out, and so he comes in and another goes out, until he gets out and of course, comes in, so the next bloke can go out, until all but the last bloke is out. That is the end of the innings. They then go out and the other side is in, until they are all out, and then the process is repeated.

You score by making runs. You don't always have to run to get a run. In fact you can get runs without even hitting the ball, let alone running. There are about 11 different ways that you can get out, including retiring.

A test match can go for five days, and still not have a result.

That is fairly much it really.

Sounds to me like getting runs in cricket is about like getting a participation trophy.

Sounds like you know jack about cricket...that said, I find the test series as boring as watching grass grow. One day matches can be interesting though...but only if it is on when when I wander past the TV as I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it.

Bit like golf really.

added. it is a child's game, not a sport.

Nah, any match that is over in a single day, or a day/nighter, is just a bit too, well, hectic for mine. That steady build, the ebb and flow, the edge of the seat suspense drawn out over five days, never really knowing whether there'll be a result, that is the only way to watch it.

I thought the Inventor of Cricket did so after a week of drinking Absinthe and smoking Opium? May be I'm wrong......:)

Really pretty straight-forward after all. Thanks for the clarification.

Do they wear gloves that they can drop before they fight? ....or is there no formalities before they fight?

I prefer the darts version of cricket.

Quite the opposite. Fighting would be considered extreme and outrageous behavior in cricket.

Back when I played (looooong time ago) you'd even cheer (well, clap) for the other team when they executed a good move of some type.

Yelling was verboten, unless it was for the fielders to shout in excitement ("hows that?" or better put: "HUZZATT?") to the umpire for a decision when they thought they had put a batsman out.

Mebbe the manners are different now, but probably only a matter of degree.

One of the people considered to be an all time great athlete was a cricket player.

Donald Bradman.

You are correct, I dont know a thing about cricket. But if you can score runs a half a dozen ways, it sure sounds as if they give out participation trophies.

Oh another thing... I'm not interested in learning anything about cricket, either.
