The one where he was selling secrets to the Soviets was probably the first to undermine his status as a teenage sex symbol, but At Close Range (1986) is probably my favorite.

A very well-written, dark book and the movie did it justice. Another vote for Mystic River. Penn played the anguished and violent Dad very well.

Not much of a Sean Penn fan, but he's been in a few good (not really memorable) films. I think "Colors" may have been his best.

If I HAD to chose, it would be Carlito's Way and Gangster Squad.

My reasoning for picking those two movies is because I feel his portrayal of his roles in those films best reveal his true real life personality and values...

Penn was amazing in Carlito's way "Attorney David Kleinfeld".

Penn was so convincing that Alan Dershowitz threatened to sue the producer for mocking him.
