Our newbie at Deer Camp showed up with a Hunter Orange Stormy Kromer last year and Angus heard me being effusive about it. He decided I needed one of my own. That's what he got me for Christmas:
I couldn't be happier! I immediately overheated in it sitting indoors.
I've been wearing one for years. It's not as warm as the hood on my down jacket but it's enough unless the wind's blowing and the chill factor is way down.

If that photo ain’t made for Dateline NBC, I don’t know what is.

Is there a threaded stud up there for the propeller ? 😃
I have one stand where I'm usually facing into the sun. It's been a productive location, and even though success there results in a long hike out, I'm there a lot.
The brim helps with the sun. Wearing a winter sticking cap sucks in that stand.
I could wear a knit cap over a baseball cap, but where's the fun in that????
That's a problem I have with most hats - too much space between the hat and the top of my ears. On most hats the ear flaps don't cover them. The Kromer does.

Neighbors say he was a quiet man that kept mostly to himself. They assumed all the digging was just gardening. No one noticed anything was wrong until his mother's social security checks stopped getting cashed in person....

I tried one a couple of years ago. A TINY little beanie cap, and the "ear flap" , when pulled down, just BARELY caught the tops of my ears. Pretty useless. Expensive and useless.
I have been told that several years ago, they redesigned the cap and thoroughly hipsterized it, and it was a much more practical piece of headgear long ago..

They're pretty great, aren't they? Mine is the plain dark green with the ear covering that folds up inside. I think I may have gotten it in the Classifieds here.
Ya know...I'm a "Hat Guy" so I had to look these up. Turns out, I already have a nice heavy wool brimmed cap with fold-down earflaps - except mine has the earflaps tucked inside. Much nicer design, I think. Lots cheaper, too. So I'm gonna pass on ordering a Stormy.
Anything of the general type is thoroughly practical, though. Warm, water resistant, windproof, can be worn several ways.

A few years ago I stopped at Shipton's Big R in Lewiston Mt and bought a Stormy Kromer Rancher's hat and a silk kerchief scarf. When I got home in Wisconsin my wife said "I can see you were hanging out with your drug store cowboy cousins". I continue to wear a "radar" cap in real cold weather.
As to it uses, shortly after I took that picture, I wandered into the family room and sat down. I was enjoying a plate of venison goetta in front of the TV when the screen got really dark around the margins. It has been slowly degrading since summer. It reminded me that it high time to replace the darn thing. I went back into my office and looked up who had the best deal on a 52" or better screen.
Long story short: I was at Best Buy when it opened up. I had bought a 70-incher on sale. It was one of those in-store pickup gigs, where you show the fellow your receipt and he goes in the back and wheels out the purchase. The counter monkey I talked to told me to bring the truck around front, and he would bring it out to me. I complied.
Here's the odd part. I got my truck up to the front and got out. It was then I realized I was behind 2 other trucks ( a Ford and a GMC), and they were piloted by over-weight middle-aged men conforming to my general affect. What are the odds? What's more, we were all three going after the 70" Samsungs that were on sale.
Me? I definitely had them on hats. My Stormy Kromer was the king of the lot.
The epilog: By Noon, the old set was out, the new set was in, and I was able to watch absolutely the best afternoon of football, a Cincinnati Bengals fan could imagine: back to back to back Green Bay beating the Browns, the Bengals beating the snot out of the Ravens and the Chiefs laying waste to the Steelers.
I got my first one for Christmas in 2003. I'm not sure when I got my orange one, but the brim and the pull down ear flap are way smaller. The older ones were better
Used to do work from time to time for my great grandfather.
No kidding? Let me guess: "really good worker but a bit strange"...
No kidding.
I don't remember my great grandfather too much. My grandfather told me about it as we drove past Ed's property on the way to ours in Plaifield. I was 14 or so.
