About 3:00 AM Monday morning, Dec 13, my wife of 18 years and my best friend in the world went into sudden cardiac arrest. I was in bed, asleep. Heard her yelling for me, jumped up, called 911. She lost consciousness and I administered CPR for nearly 10 minutes before the EMTs arrived (I'm certified). They got her heart started and put her on oxygen, but she was already gone. All day Monday in the ICU on a ventilator, the DNR questions, etc. Her answer was no in that situation, in writing, years ago. I went home at 7:00 PM, our dogs to look after. They wouldn't pull the breathing tube until I left, although I asked them to so I could be there at the final moment.
They called at 1:56 AM Tuesday to inform me she had passed.
Blood clots in her lungs caused it, they said. Covid negative, non-vaxxed. She had a history of clots though, since her last pregnancy in '89. Plus stage IV cancer in 2015, and 4 rounds of chemo. Any one of those could have been the culprit.
She is with God now.
Victoria was the best person I have ever known, bar none. Honest to a fault with the utmost integrity. She would punch you in the mouth if you deserved it, friend or foe, but would give you the shirt off her back if she thought it would help. She always did the right thing, even when it hurt her to do so. She never lied to me in the 19 years we were together, and not only made me want to be a better man but helped me to be. I'm proud to have known and loved her, and doubt I'll ever meet her like again.
I'll miss her every minute of every day, always.
Sorry for your loss. I can’t begin to imagine

It’s a tough road. I was a widower at 43 - since remarried. Lost my first wife to Leukemia in 2013. She had been sick on and off since age 35. Left me and three kids. With her medical history, there was always that heightened expectation, but it never makes it easier when it finally happens.
Be sure and take good care of yourself. Eat well, get the proper amount of sleep. Get up and get going like you normally would. Get help if you need it. It’s expected that you will be mourning but watch for depression. My wife passed mid-October and the Holidays were the worst thing to get through that first year. We had lots of family & friends around throughout that time, but afterwards they naturally went back to their lives while you are now having to figure out your new normal. Even after nearly eight years, there’s not a single day I don’t think about her. I don’t tell my new wife that though.
Happy to listen if you need a sympathetic ear. PM anytime.
God bless!
Sorry for your loss, my condolences.

Sincerest and deepest condolences. That is a tough thing to deal with.... and then you will feel her being gone every day in your future.
May the Good Lord be with you thru this difficult time.
Just this past Friday, I had to attend a wake of a friends wife, who I've known for 15 years or so... she was 54.... Covid, and unvaxed.
The hardest thing about it, was to watch her three boys stand there and trying to deal with it.... 35, 30 and 27 years old...
May God Bless your loving wife... and God Bless Susie, who's wake I attended Friday evening...
Life just hangs by a hair most of the time and we don't realize it until something like this happens. May the Good Lord bring you peace and pleasant memories.

So sorry to hear this...way too early...don't know what to say
Having gone through similar circumstances, I extend my sincerest sympathies for the loss of your soulmate. If I may suggest, search out a grief counselor - I was at the state of simply imploding when a close friend more or less said that if I didn't go, he and couple of big goons would come get me and make me go. It was the only way I survived. You have a lot of living left, and your wife would want you to make the best of all the opportunities that come your way. But you have to grieve before you can go on, and then you get the point when you begin celebrating her life instead of mourning her passing. Some of the strongest guys I know, never could get past this step and only grief counseling made it possible for them to go forward. I hope that time brings healing to you and your family.
Most respectfully,
Py

Dang man I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. Prayers for the comfort of the Holy Spirit I can’t imagine being in your shoes.
I lost my wife of 42 years to Covid this past September. My deepest condolences to you and your family.
While you often read obits that say the family was at their side, more often than not they were gathered but not physically in the room. It's very common for a family to be sitting around waiting for a person to die but they don't until the family for some reason isn't actually in the room. In my brother's case, we'd been there for several hours after he was taken off life support but he didn't die until 30 minutes after we all went to lunch. From what I've heard and read, this is very common. It's like the person really doesn't want anyone there and they keep hanging on until they're alone.
My wife died of cancer. We had her in a hospital bed in the living room. I heard her coughing at 3am but when I got up at 6, she was gone, sitting in a chair. I think she'd been to the bathroom and couldn't make it back to bed so she just sat down there. My 92 yo dad was in a hospital. The nurse had been there checking him out and joking with him. She left for 20 min and he died in that time.
So, don't feel bad about not being there at the last breath. You aren't alone.
Nothing I can say will make you feel better, but I am truly sorry for your loss. Now she is in a place where none of the petty earthly things matter.A much better place than here.Huntz
Prayers for you and your family. I can't imagine.
I'm sorry for your loss. Prayers for comforting and strength.

Jim

I'll add my condolences and prayers for you and your family. I'm extremely sorry that you had to go through this and I know it won't be easy for you for a long while. As others have said, take care of yourself now and do what you can to move on, but not forget your love and the love you two shared. I pray that the healing takes place in your heart as quickly as possible.
I am very sorry for your loss, Shaun. I can't imagine what you are going through. Take care of yourself.
Mark
Glad you got to be there for it.
Nobody could have done a better or more caring job.
Condolences and best to you and your family.
I'm sorry to hear this. Nothing I or anyone else says can provide the comfort you need. Counseling is a solid recommendation. Remember the good times.
My sincere condolences Shaun.
Thank you all for taking the time to offer condolences and prayers, especially those who have suffered a similar loss. It means a lot that so many would reach out, even if just to type a few words offered in kindness.
It's been a rough month. The holidays weren't easy.
I believed myself prepared for the eventuality. The cancer thing in 2015 was bad, thought I was going to lose her then. But she beat it for damn near 7 years, which is unheard of with stage IV cancer. Those years were a blessing, and we had many conversations about her leaving this world before me. She figured the cancer would come back and wanted me to be ready for it.
I wasn't.
Yesterday, I got up before sunrise so I could drop our new puppy off at the vet to get spayed. We were going to breed her with our red tri-color male, but there's no way I can look after a litter of puppies now. The dogs are home alone for 11-12 hours while I'm working. Those two took to each other like peas and carrots, as Forest would say, and that makes me smile every time I see them together. Puppies or no, they're mates now. I came home and got the red beans and sausage cooking. Went back to town and picked her up in the afternoon. She was a little groggy, and didn't eat much, slept with me last night. She's outside with the others now, back to normal.
We drove to Fort Cobb, OK to buy this pup on 9/27. 1056 mile round trip. It was our last adventure together. We got one more camping/woodcutting trip to our mountain property after that then settled in for winter.
Anyway, I'm rambling. I don't really know why I posted about my situation here. I'm a private guy, usually keep myself to myself. Something prompted me to. Maybe it was Victoria.
Again, thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.
Shaun
You have lived my worse fear. I am humbled
I’m praying for you brother.
Im sorry Im so late to this thread. Im also deeply sorry for your loss. I don't want to even imagine what its like but the older we get, the more we think about it. Id be lost without my wife, she has helped make me the man I am today and I shudder in fear of what I may have became without her by my side for the last 40 years.
PS: I pray no Russians John Wick your dog. Added for humor.
Thanks for sharing Shaun.
My biggest fear, I am sorry you had to go though this and wish you nothing but the best.
Thank you all for taking the time to offer condolences and prayers, especially those who have suffered a similar loss. It means a lot that so many would reach out, even if just to type a few words offered in kindness.

This place feels like family after awhile! I told my wife when I go, make sure and come on here and tell everyone. Everyone I've met from this board in person has been a jam up guy or gal.
Mike
No words could help ease the pain , but prayers for you and your family at this time.. Joe
You have lived my worse fear. I am humbled
This. Sorry Shaun.
No words...only condolences and a prayer.
🦫
Shaun, saying sorry for your loss seems so inadequate, but it's all I have to offer. God bless you.
Bob
Some people don't believe it, but I definitely *do*. This life we live here is a burden. It doesn't seem like such a burden because we have nothing to reference it against.
But your wife has escaped the burden. She knows more than she's ever known. She feels better than she's ever felt, and she's more than she's ever been.
Someday you will be there too.
My condolences Shaun. Godspeed to your wife.
I’m so sorry for you and your family OP. Sounds like she was a wonderful woman. May she rest in peace.
Shaun,
We’ve never met or spoken but having read your post I almost feel like I know you. I’m just a couple years older than you but I’ve known my wife since I was 16 and can’t imagine life without her. I would imagine that during Victoria’s bout with cancer you had to let your mind wander to where you are now but it isn’t something you can really prepare for. You just have to look back on all the time you had together as a gift. Those pups will be valuable company in the time ahead and will probably even get a little spoiled! Hopefully the posts here can provide some nuggets of hope and a ray of light in this dark time for you.
Prayers and condolences,
Stros
Oh Shaun, It breaks my heart to hear this news even though I don't know you. It is a loss you can't recover.
I have had some near misses with mine the last couple of years. It is hell and crushes your world. I can feel the agony of your loss and hope you have family and friends that buck you up. Stay strong and don't forget you have purpose. I am so sorry.
Nick

Thank you for sharing.

The one thing for sure... is that you Loved your wife with great conviction.
Not everyone has that... nor can understand it. There is great Honor and Pride in deep Love.
Those pups will be valuable company in the time ahead and will probably even get a little spoiled!
Ha! They're already spoiled.
The young'n will be riding shotgun with me at work for a few days while she heals from the surgery. She's doing well but I don't want her rough-housing with the other dogs while I'm gone. And I can make sure she doesn't fuss with the incision.
Our fuzzy children . . .

Same age here. Can not imagine what you’re going through, but hope you can find peace at some point.
You had a wonderful gift, and were smart enough to treasure every single day. Your wife knew how much you loved her. Now you just have to be patient until you are with her again.
I am so sorry for your loss.
I’m so very sorry Shaun. I couldn’t imagine the loss.
God takes the best ones first.
You have my deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences.
I raise a glass to your Victoria tonight.
My sincere condolences on your great loss. Your wife left you and your family a wonderful legacy of integrity and love. God's peace and Godspeed.
Peace, Strength and the Grace of God be with you and yours in this time of sorrow.
It will be 7 years ago in May that my wife passed away at age 52. I've walked the same path you are on now. It's a tough one but you can travel it. Back a few pages, someone suggested a grief counselor. My church sponsored a grief group. I attended and eventually became one of group leaders. I would have survived without attending but it certainly helped.

That kind of pain is greater than can be described. I'm praying for you.
"Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need."
All the above. Respect to you. And other good mates.
The rest of us should make sure every day our wife knows we love them, our turn will come.
