I encouraged him to read the gospel of John and realized that the seed of the Word that was watered would need more time in another conversation before he would perhaps repent of his false view of God and His gospel. Before we went our separate ways, I prayed that the Lord would enlighten this man and His Spirit would make known what he needed to believe on the Son.
Hence,

..."Repent ye, and believe the gospel," was my attempt to help this gentleman.

The bible from front to back tells us repentance is necessary to salvation. Jonah illustrated it.Jonah wasn't put in there as an interesting story. It was a clear message that even the enemy city of Nineveh accepted God's word repented and was saved. Nebuchadnezzar repented. John the Baptist told the Pharisees to show fruits of repentance. The story of the prodigal son was God's message delivered through his messenger Jesus that salvation through repentance was available to the worst of us. Jesus near the end lamented that God's chosen people refused to repent pointedly telling them that if the miracles they witnessed had been done in Sodom it would have repented. He said judgement day would be more tolerable for Sodom than for them. He lamented that Nineveh had repented at the preaching of Jonah but they were visited by a greater than Jonah and would not repent.

In Acts 26:20 Paul even slipped up and admitted the importance of good WORKS meet with repentance.
