Watching shark week....

Anyone been up close to a great white??

Shark cage?

Fool enough to surf in great white waters?
I been spined by a catfish a few times.
No Great Whites, but fishing down in the Keys, out of Marathon, had a very close encounter with 3 big Bull sharks. One of them came right up out of the water, right next to the boat, following a fish I was bringing into the boat, less than an arms length away! Thing was bigger around than a 55 gallon drum and about 11 feet long. As far as I'm concerned, that was close enough!

Kayak and Abelone dive in landlord territory, but no sightings. Friends have had their boats chomped, but no injuries as yet.

Surely HotRotLincoln has had to fend off a great white attack or two…..
I was on a boat once.
We'd see sharks when surfing years ago... we did not swim/surf at dawn/dusk, in schools of menhaden, or when the water was really dirty. Cuts your risk greatly.

When I was a child, I would paddle my blow up raft into schools of menhaden... hard to believe the adults did not stop us.
When Quinn the Eskimo gets here everyone is gonna jump for joy.

Bucket list.

In a shark cage in Australia.
Use to catch sand sharks when I worked offshore. Only sharks I ever been around.
Only its close cousin, but I was in a boat. Salmon Shark
Was fishing a charter in Australia and another guy on board had a tiger shark on that was around 10 feet. Had it around the boat for a while and it went on a sizzling run and then stopped. When he reeled it back in all that was left was the head. Not sure if it was a GW or not, but it was something big and toothy.
wreck diving off Ponte Vedra Beach back in the early seventies and at about 80 feet. Swimming down a dark corridor of a WWII torpedoed ship, I ran face to face into a fairly large bull shark. I put the flare in his face, and he charged past me. I never went back down there again.

As close as I am right now
no GW but had 47 stiches from a Mako.
I had a couple of gar swim under my kayak on the lake once. Does that count?
I’d love to see them from a boat. Not going in a cage underwater though. I remember watching shark week in the late 80s. They were always saying “you just don’t see the big 16-18 foot long females anymore”. Fast forward 34-35 years and they’re everywhere. I couldn’t have 5 seconds of enjoyment surfing in California knowing those big monsters are swimming under me.

Never been around a Great White that I know of but I logged over 350 dives when I was stationed in Hawaii and was around some big Tiger Sharks. Neat critters but they can really put a hurting on you if they want to. I was never around one that was acting aggressive but saw enough of them to know you had to be on the alert. It is amazing how quickly a 12 or 13 foot shark can just pop into view.
No white sharks. In the water working/recreating a lot of my life. Largest sharks we've seen are 20+' tigers that come here to pup every summer. One big girl took a whole 5 gallon bucket we were chumming cobias up with in one bite. It was cleated to my 18' McKee and she shook the hell out of it for a while. We also see the biggest cudas I've seen in the world up here too. A pack of 10 or so 6 footers blew up all around the boat today. We had bait so thick at 20 miles out you could walk on them. First blackfin I've ever seen in that close came aboard today at the same place. 65' of water.
Does a cold hearted pawnbroker count?
Only hammerhead, reef and whale shark for me. Is a whale shark really a shark? Not to impressive.

Sure I seen more diving off of Okinawa but nothing else jumps in my head

No great whites but I have caught a few mediocre black tips and bonnet heads.
While doing a 30 mph with a tiller steering outboard motor [white knuckle], I have been passed by Dall's Porpoise doing 35 mph under my 14' boat.

I used to dive San Miguel, Shark Park, and Santa Rosa years ago. There were great whites around but never saw one. One dive I was checking out a 10” green anemone and I felt a tug on my flipper! It was a pesky harbor seal. He kept screwing around with me like he was a retriever. As long as he was around I wasn’t worried.

In the Caribbean, St Thomas, I almost bumped into a 5’ great barracuda. He was just hanging out in 10’ of water. Free diving off Anageda island I saw a 6’ bull shark close up. He just swam by me.

No, just a couple of cows and whales.
Sharks and I have an agreement-- I don't go in the water where they are,, they don't come on land where I am

I can remember swimming through the kelp beds off of Coronado in a black frigging wetsuit. Seriously thought I was going to have a short lived career. Instructors had M-14's in security boats acting like they were protecting us. At least one instructor was honest, "I am just here to shoot you in the head to save you the pain of being eaten alive".
A few big bulls and smaller blacktips and bonnet heads while wade fishing and diving the rigs. Had a quick pass by a mako that looked to be about 8' while spear fishing a weed line.Bastard damn near made me fill my shorts.
Had a hammerhead slow swim past me diving on a rig in the gulf, off Galveston,i didn't feel my heart stop, but i did feel it restart in my chest.Only time i ever saw one close up during working dives.I feed the sharks on vacation in the Bahamas once.
Now,at my age,i think i'd have a stroke.

I've been brushed by sharks while fishing in the surf. Don't know what kind or how large, but I knew the feeling of their skin against mine.
I've wade fished with Leighton and Brian on Cape Cod where they had warning signs up for Great Whites but didn't see one.

I’ve had this happen one time, many years ago. I wasn’t fishing, just out in the surf throwing football with the family. Damn creepy feeling. I’ve seen quite a few sharks in the surf over the years. Only one really spooked me.

About 1955 a 3rd grade classmate's dad got bit on the upper thigh surf fishing on Boca Chica. Bled to death before he could get to hospital.
Shark was probably going after stringer of fish.
Boca Chica is where Musk launches his rockets

Had a buddy get bit there surfing back in the 90s, probably a bull.
Some trips to the Cheaspeake Bay Bridge Tunnel all you catch are sharks. Damned Atlantic Sharpnose sharks. They are thick in the Chesapeake Bay in the summer.

good eating though.
I was close to a mud shark once. Does that count?
Two guys I knew in Biloxi, Rob & Ray, were from the Seattle area and had come to Biloxi to work in the casinos.

They were surfing down in NW Oregon with three other friends at dusk. Ray had a long board and was catching the last wave he was going to surf for the evening. As he started paddling with his arms he hit something, turned his head and was face to face with a giant great white shark. He said it shocked him so bad he was paralyzed with fear, everything went into slow motion.
The long-board he was on seemed to stay right up against the shark as he picked up speed sliding down the wave. His hand gripping the board was pressing against the side of the sharks head. He could feel the pectoral fin under the board and his fingers hanging onto the board were touching the fin too. He said it slid along beside him face to face for about 50 yards then disappeared.

He rode the wave as far as possible and could hear a couple of the friends yelling their heads off, they had seen the whole encounter with the shark.
Ray said he was glad they saw the shark because no-one would have believed his story about how big it was.
He never surfed on the west coast again.
Rob didn't see anything.

A friend of my ex-wife's brother was bit by a great white while surfing. How close is that in degrees of Bacon?

Was on a charter boat, TX coast. Another person landed a big hammerhead. I felt its weird skin.

Caught and ate sharks in the Chesapeake.
F'n dovish have ruined trips to Cape Cod. Blue sharks also.

Worst sea encounter was a blue crab as a kid.
They told me I'd get pinched, they were wrong.
It got right beside the fingernail, I jerked and it cut the corner of my finger off. Tried to act like nothing happened, the blood dripping gave me away.
Few if any shark varieties I’ve not encountered in times gone by. Biggest White was about 20’, hammerheads in the 10-12’ range, bulls, whitetip and black. They respond favorably when poked in the nose with a spear. Makos are the ones that give me pause. Rowdy they are.
I went on a shark cage dive in south africa in 2008. I saw about 6 different great whites and one that bit the cage was a 13 footer. Many of my pictures came out pretty blurry because I think I was shaking and the boat and cage was rocking.

I kind of regret doing it because I've had a fear of the ocean ever since. When I lived in Hawaii in 97 I was always in the water. Now I rarely go in very far.

Just a few lemon sharks wading the flats for bonefish.
I don't think I've ever seen a live Great White. It's 100 miles out from here to the continental shelf and that's where they like to hang.
My old man lives in Fort Bragg,CA .... about 100 mi north of San Francisco .... he and my brother are both big into Abalone diving.... well used to be anyways, been closed last few years. He has seen a 10-12 footer one time...says he wasn't worried, compared it to being in a pasture with a angus bull.... just kept his distance and it cruised on by about 30 ft away. Crazy fugger.... I tried it when I was a kid and got fugged with by a seal....knocked my mask off... if god intended us to be in the water he woulda gave us gills lol.

Fort Bragg is kind of at the northern most part of their territory but they have had a few attacks and even a death in the last few years up there....no thanks.
