Job's been getting to be less fun and more of a job. Been talking to the wife. Talked to our financial guy just now and he says I can retire anytime and expect to get 120% of our monthly expenses in income.

So, baring a getting hit by an errant drone, looks like sometime early next year.

Got a trip planned to look for new diggs in the Utah/Arizona/Nevada region.

Best news I've had today.

If you come down through eastern OR and pass by this way, give me a holler.

Congrats, but why are you waiting that long? Once you decide to go, go. 2 weeks notice hit the road no money in letting them fug with you any longer than that....mb

We were going to drive down and hit the Alvord and Steens. Still a little ways from you.

Since I started bitching plans changed. Flying to Vegas then over to Mesquite and St. George.
Congratulations!

So, you'll make more retired than now? No-brainer on that one. You 60 yet?
Posted By: OlderGuy54 Re: Retirement, here I come - 08/11/22
You know what makes retirement even more fun? When your wife decides to go back to work. I love her and miss her, but I find I can get a lot more done when she's not here.

Just wait, you'll wonder how you ever got anything done at home when you were working.

No. I make a good amount but I save a lot. We'd be able to cover 100% of our expenses plus another 20% if we wanted with our retirement income, forever.

Will be 63 next June.

What the hell are you waiting on?

In December of 1980, my dad had over 40 years service.
"Dad, why don't you just go ahead and retire?"
"Marty, If I retire now, I pay 75% of my health insurance and the company pays 25%. If I retire at 61, the company pays 75% and I only have to pay 25%."

He would have turned 61 on August 1, 1981. He passed away in June 1981.

The day he died, I swore that the instant I could retire, I was out!
No waiting for me.
If you can retire and don't, think of the things you'll miss out on and the time you missed out with friends and family!

Don't delay!
Retire today!

Remember to do this, on your last day......when you walk out of the office/shop, for the last time....walking across the parking lot, to your rig. STOP for a moment. Look up and let the sunshine on your face, and let it start to sink in, that never again will you be doing what you don't want to be doing, or when you don't want to do it! From now on, it's all about you!

I pulled the plug 5 years ago, the only down side is......IF you think time flew by before, just wait until you retire!!!

Son lives about 30 miles from here. But he can still visit if we move. No grand kids.

I do love our little acreage though. But we could sell, move to a new spot with similar acreage, and pay for it cash. That's the plan, anyway.

Ory gone killed those about 30 years ago.
Congratulations! I'm going on 3 years retired. I tell people it's the best job I never had. I thought I would miss the money but we haven't missed a dime of it. I'll never forget driving home after my last day at work feeling like 1,000 lbs. of weight had been taken off my shoulders.

Enjoy it!

We just had an inquiry-soft offer on our primary house/land in Virginia[as in yesterday] from a local developer.

Has my head spinning to be honest.

Shutter the famdamily business after 80 years[39 for me] and walk away?
Selling would facilitate the above.

Struggling, dad worked here until 80+, grandad worked here until the day he died.

Again ENJOY!

Turning 60 next year.

Looks pretty damn green to me. Will be looking around S Ut. in a couple weeks.

My current job is writing SW for a device that makes drones do things their operators don't want. Like fly off into the sunset and crash into a hillside.

So if I move into your neighborhood, be careful where you take pictures. wink

Unlike many areas of Utah.....our winter snow pack was good to us

Newly rebuilt reservoir held 94% capacity....most it's ever held !

Having water means owning water shares with your water canal company for irrigation

Secondary outside is available in towns and paid with your regular utility bill

Available mid April till late September

Culinary water ? I pay $17.25 a month for an allotted 10K gallons......I use 3-4K at best

Southern Utah ? Depends where ya go.......St George ? crazy busy & trying to build...

They mentioned running a pipe line from Lake Powell to St George......ha LOL........Powell is D R Y

Go visit the area...Your wife might say.....'This ain't green Oregon'

pic our reservoir at 94% in June

Been kicking around making an offer on a little lot out by Douglas Lake.

Congrads BUT give your notice and leave!

Last year I waited 3 months to help out a project which was the biggest mistake I could of done!!

No thanks and it cost me time I could have been getting my place ready for deer season! I could have been back home here in PA so much sooner!

As for money it's crazy how I worried about cash but my money manager has me setup with more $$$$ a month than when I was working!

That part about leaving your hunting grounds kinda sucks. Renegade and slummy tell us there's hunting in TN at least.

Are you going to try to sell you business? Just shut it down? Seems if it's been paying your family's bills for a couple of generations, there might be a person that would like something like that?
Retirement. The best job I ever had.

Congrats Steve,

Make a plan and stick to it or you may find out the hard way you should have. It will still be a darn fine feeling when you walk away from your job and your plan is intact. I retired when I turned 65, about 4 years ago now and I love it but I can't figure out where the time keeps going....

Hope everything works out for you whereever you land. Lots of great places to live and explore but even though this state is going to hell in a handbasket, I just can't talk myself into leaving everything I enjoy here- ocean, mountains, desert, fishing, fairly decent weather most of the time, and a few other things I can't remember at the moment. wink You can always come back and visit, right?

Well smarquez I'm honest enough to say I don't know how it works where your at. Wife and I need to work things out. Also it works out better to do it on the New Year for SS reasons. It's all new info and we're trying to come up with a plan. Nice to have cash flow while doing so.

Also my employer has been nothing but good to me. And, despite those who know me personally, I really try not to be a dick. But it does come naturally.

My work is VERY technical and specialized. Getting someone up to speed would take a month or so. I wouldn't want to leave them in a bind.

Good for you. Enjoy life now. I retired 8 years ago at 49. Made it 5 years before I started going stir crazy. You can only fish, hunt, cut firewood, camp, boat ext. I had lost me sence of purpose. Trust me I do not need the money and my health benefits cover me and the wife until we are dead. Being a retired LEO of 25 years, I was offered a pert time job as a school police officer. Two of us cover the 40hr week. The guy I work w does not hunt. So I get to chase gobblers in the spring and elk/ deer in the fall.

Retirement is not what everyone thinks. Or maybe I just am different.

As ready as I am to be fully retired, I think I'll end up wanting something to do. Probably not for the first few years. I may do some volunteer work of some sort. I might get on the HOA board. That would occupy my time and give me a chance to get back at jackasses who don't want to cut their grass.

Most likely close as there really isn't much of a market anyhow, leaves me with a 7000 sq ft building sitting 4 blocks from a 10K student college to dispose of and add to retirement savings.

I do have a friend near Slum/Ren with a hunt camp that has offered to let me come hunt some.

God willing...I don't want to work anywhere "until the day I die." If you've worked somewhere for almost 40 years, I'd say you've earned it.

Entering my 9th year of retirement, it's the best job I ever had. The advice regarding physical fitness is spot on, I walk a mile every day and am in the gym M-W-F. I have better muscle tone than I've had in years, BP and blood sugar are fine. Just had my eye doctor appointment this morning and my distance vision is 20/20, been wearing the same glasses for 8 yrs. now. My vision has been stable for more than 5 yrs, the doctor was well pleased.

Why the 2 week notice? It's not like he might need to go back to work there.

Well smarquez I'm honest enough to say I don't know how it works where your at. I worked for the state of South Dakota and if you don't give them 2 weeks notice the BOP will drag their feet and make sure you get screwed out of your first retirement check even though the SDRS is a separate entity. I have friends who know make sure I knew that..mb

Los Angeles Co. so a .gov job too. I applied to the retirement board, gave them the last day I intended to work. They do the arrangements with payroll etc. I shared with people around me, union, a few other professional associations. 30 days in advance sets it up so there is no break in pay periods between your final pay check and first pension check.
I actually took a call from a guy one time.
"Hi Cap, I'm retiring".
Me: "Cool Hubert, when is your last day"?
Hubert: "Tomorrow".
Me" "Wow, good for you".
He was down at the retirement board, they showed him the numbers if he retired today, 6 months, 1 year. He did well with savings, def comp etc. so he pulled then plug right then. He wasn't going to be hurt by a 1 month delay of his pension check. It's not unusual but not real common. Nobody took offense.

3482 days for me aside from a short stint at Bass Pro for a get out of the house job. I don't know what the hell I was thinking.

Haven't 'not worked' since I was in High School. Only took one week of unemployment during all those years and that was just a company shutdown. Hell, had non-family paying jobs since picking strawberries at nine years old.

Trying to get my head wrapped around actually pulling the trigger.

You earned it Steve. You will enjoy your life of retirement,I know I have. It's time to close the old book of your life and start another book of Steve's life.I worked a job I loved for 32.5yrs.When I retired six years ago I never looked back. Now I feel like I never worked at that job for 32.5yrs of the best years of my life.I live for today and tomorrow, not yesterday.Enjoy!!!

Posted By: jbmi Re: Retirement, here I come - 08/13/22
You will enjoy it, never go back to see how things are running or to see old friends. See them other places than work.
Leave all work matters at work when you leave, bring nothing with you, they say "we'll miss you" it's BS, maybe they'll miss you for about a day, then you become stranger and all the good things you did for the company, will be changed by your replacement.
I've been retired now for 21 years, I enjoyed my job that I had for 31 years, but honestly would not go back for a million dollar salary.
Retirement has been heaven, good wife, no payments, more $$ than needed and still in good health, can't ask for much more.
Someone described every day of retirement as being like " A teenager on a Saturday with $20 in his pocket"
Being a child of the sixties, I know exactly what that means.

Cedar is nice but it’s growing too much. I absolutely love that area though as that is where my dad’s side of the family is from and I lived there as a kid. Make sure you visit in January/February before you pull the trigger because it does get cold there.

Hey, Cedar City doesn't sound to bad, especially compared to Yamhill County and Environs. If that's really where you end up settling, I wish you the best. Not really much snow there compared to some places, and unlike back east once they plow the roads they usually dry out quickly.

Steve, very happy for you! We are still setting up housekeeping at our new retirement digs here in TN. I’m very glad we went when we did, not so thrilled that the economy (FJB!) decided to really tank as hard as it is now. This house in TN will be fully paid for in another 10 months, and that will increase our income stream by 19k a year, and I’ll hit the age to draw SSA about half a year after that. We’ll be more than fine then, but we are trying to live totally on my retired Navy Chiefs pension without dipping into our tanking 401s and IRAs, this is the first time in a long time we are having to watch every penny, but I do think we can slip past this tight spot in the road. Hopefully things will settle down soon, but who knows? I know at least that you and your money guy have seen this landscape and figured all this crap in (all this crap so far, anyway.) Enjoy this new chapter!

Posted By: Steve Re: Retirement, here I come - 09/22/22
Lisa's was a graphic artist in her professional life. So their art museum and college art program is really appealing to her. That's making up for the cold weather.

I like that it's more rural (besides being a college town) and outdoor (hunting/hiking) activities are easier.

Lisa likes to snow shoe so that's nice for her, too,

Better options for property there too. You'd think getting a 1+ acre lot would be easier in Mesquite or St. George, but their pretty scarce and expensive.

Got to work the numbers but it's looking promising.
Posted By: lvmiker Re: Retirement, here I come - 09/22/22
Steve, I too would choose CC over St. George and Mesquite. It will take you a long time to just explore the cool places w/in an 100 mile radius. Utah claims to have the world's best snow! Enjoygrin

Retirement has been the absolute best, most enjoyable, most stress free, most rewarding 25+ years of my life!
I am tempted to say you are doing something wrong - but that does NOT begin to cover it.
YOU are doing a LOT of things wrong if you are not thrilled and fulfilled to be retired!

After 38 years of all the twists and turns in my career I'm finally retiring on September 30th, 2022. Mixed emotions for sure. But I have to say its been good overall and I'm looking forward to a new beginning. Can't wait to get to the range mid-week and have the place to myself. Going fishing for sure; just don't know where yet. Going to do some travel and see old friends all over the USA. Going to do some hunting; don't know where yet but its going to be a fun project planning trips, etc. Can't wait to concentrate more and more on my reloading and cranking out even better and more ammo. That is, of course, if I can find more primers. LOL!!! Notwithstanding everything, I look with great anticipation to be free to do what I want to do when I want to do it without worrying about Monday morning coming around. Peace. Out....

To those that are retired, what is your exepnses ? Is your spouse retired too. I ask cause I am 59 1/2 now and my dividend income is only a little over $20,000 in my Fidelity retirement portfolio. I will , or should have another $8,500 from my carpenters union , and in 2 1/2 yrs I will get S.S. and that should be about 17,000 ? per yr. This leaves me with $45, 000 per yr. My wife will likely work till she is 63? and then hang it up. Is $45,000 per yr. enough for you ? My wife is only 57 but she needs to wait till 65 for S.S. I am not sure how we will ever make ends meet.

Well, that depends on what your expenses are. Do you have a mortgage? Credit card debt? Car payments?
Also, where you live plays a factor.

Thanks for all the advise. I dont have any debt and own my own house . I have a few 7 ac. properties with river frontage I could sell for about 100K each if I had to. The properties should hold their value real well cause of location and it's river frontage. One is very good , deep frontage and the other is just ok river frontage. One is 45 mi. west of Green Bay, Wis. One is in NW Wisconsin . I sometimes wish to sell both and move . I told my wife I am moving to Upper Michigan. She said she will miss me.

Only you can answer that question.
Posted By: Steve Re: Retirement, here I come - 09/26/22
Ihookem,

You should talk with a financial guy. Our Credit Union has one that's free. You might find one as part of your banking or as part of your job (HR Dept).

He is going to have tools that allow you to check what your expenses and income will be. Not that you can't do it yourself, but it's nice to have someone objective to help you out.

We have most of our money with Ameriprise. He's done an outstanding job at managing things and getting us set up. This of course costs us, and we COULD do it ourselves. But I know, even with his ~1% commission he's done better than I could have done. I have a problem knowing when to get out of an investment.

Anyway look for some professional advice is, er..., my advise.
Posted By: ihookem Re: Retirement, here I come - 09/29/22
I had 3 of them and they were so bad I lost money on all 3 in the biggest bull run in history. If you get a good one you are ok. By the time you find out they suck they have a LOT of your money and its too late.

I'm done 1 week from today, after 44 years with the same company.

Retired after 39 great years with a great company, 11 years ago. Best thing I ever did.
Posted By: Bobmar Re: Retirement, here I come - 11/25/22
I retired May 6th. It was a decision that I made practically overnight. My wife had suggested it for a couple years. Anyway, that was the first day in 44 years that I didn’t have at least one job. I just finished my first 6 months of retirement and have no doubt that it was one of the best decisions I ever made! I’m busier than ever but I’m doing things that I want to do. If I don’t finish a project today, it’s OK because tomorrow is Saturday. And so is the next day! Enjoy!

My day is coming. December 16th is my last shift. My wife retires December 30th. She has been cutting hair for over 50 years.

Not sure if Congratulations or Condolences are in order……retirement can go either direction!
Make the best of it whichever way it goes! memtb

Just got back from taking a load down to the temporary rental in St George.

Once we left the portland area didn't see a single homeless camp or any graffiti to speak of.

House closes today.

My current job has mentioned some contract work. Will probably do some.

After informing my boss a couple few months ago that I was leaving, told him yesterday that Friday was going to be my effective last day (PTO). They still haven't hired my replacement. <head-shaking>

Was in the office in the industrial area of NW Portland yesterday. Went out to leave at the end of the day and Portlandia gave me a lovely parting gift of having my truck broken into. All they got of significance was my Go-Bag (GTF Back Home Bag) and a hunting knife. F'ing homeless tweekers. Man I wish I would have caught the [bleep] in the act, but I'd probably end up as a guest of Oregon for longer than I'd like.

Everything that has happened since we made the decision to retire and get out of Oregon has only reinforced it.

Moving van showing up on the 27th. Weather permitting we are out of here on the 28th. Supposed to have the window replaced on Monday. Crossing fingers...

Sorry to hear about the truck, but the pending retirement sounds good. Remind me where you are headed?

Enjoy some down time!
We closed on one section of our land sale last week, but it wasn't a large enough chunk to fully walk away from work.....just yet!

I hoped you dropped a present on the sidewalk as a parting gift to that chithole.

That's a great area to be in.

NW Portland, including 22/23 and the Pearl, has sure gone downhill in the last decade or so. I'm sure it's a concern to all of the rich people who bought into the Pearl over the years. We have friends in old NW who have been in their place for 40 years and they are planning to leave Portland.

They will probably try to make that your problem.

Your truck getting broken into, at work, during your last days seems like an omen. An omen for retiring & moving.

Wishing you the greatest.

f you enjoy retirement half as much as I do you're winning big time.

They're going to contract me back for a bit of time. I wish them no ill. What I was working on is something I'm most proud of in my career. Something that could really make a difference.

Steve: Sorry to hear about the break-in and minor losses!
YOU... (everyone!) only lives once and your decision to get the flock out of portland will enhance your life and extend your longevity (stress kills!).
Best wishes, again, for your retirement and relocation.
Good work.

That is really cool! What portion do you work on? Hardware, software, electronics?
Posted By: Steve Re: Retirement, here I come - 12/14/22
I designed and wrote all the SW on the first rev. Also did most of the development of the GPS techniques. Since the first rev another eng wrote a serial interface and I did more SW work. It's a small team. Was just two HW Eng, SW eng (me), Mech Eng, and Lead Eng. Since then another SW eng was added.

Lol, A drone fugger upper, that's pretty cool! I want one of those thing to screw with the kids at the park......

Is what I meant by that was I suspect that by their lack of planning they will try to make it an "emergency" on your part.

Huge money there depending if you are interest in side work/money.

Copy that...

That Drone Interrupter is quite impressive...

Make big coin as a Contractor IMHO... and maybe work in a "Clause" where you are doing traveling demonstrations... Get paid to travels some with your family... Demo the product... Travel some more...

Hike, hunt, fish, site-see... drink some wine... Demo the Drone Interrupter at local PDs etc. Repeat

Paid Gig Vacation... maybe.

Even if the travel is a lower paying gig... who cares... 100% of your expenses are paid/tax write off.

It would be a great way to travel with your family some... keep a very light schedule.

I could probably set you up with some PDs and the DNR here in Virginia/WV... Kinda thing.
