One of the more interesting things about volunteering at the Alamo is meeting people from all over. Spoke to an older Russian gentleman today.

He expects Russia to eventually lose out in the Ukraine. He said the Russian Army was heavily recruiting from among the poorer regions offering substantial cash incentives. He also said these new recruits simply didn’t understand how deadly the modern battlefield has become to infantry, not just tanks, due to smart weapons and drones.

We got to talking about carriers and my belief that the era of the aircraft carrier could be coming to an end.

He referenced a background in aviation, said he thought that was not likely, and said that most people did not appreciate the enormous projection of power an aircraft carrier represents.

I said if anyone’s gonna have that power, there’s a lot worse candidates than the US, he did not disagree.

I dunno enough about that war to have an opinion either way.
TY for sharing BW
What I found interesting was his comments on the survivability or lack thereof of individual infantrymen on the modern battlefield.
Most of the Russian soliders in Ukraine now are not ethnic Russians.

But from the poorer, far eastern provinces, with heavy influence of asian/mongol heritage.

The white soldiers are primarily used for parades and decorations.
I find the best military analysis usually comes from random strangers at national landmarks. Ymmv.
Not just infantry, but battlefields are changing for tanks as well.
Cheap drones carrying high explosive are becoming a threat to armor as well.
Battle and tactics have been constantly changing from the first fight where a caveman beaned his foe with a rock or club.
Recognizing this, and staying on top of it, are as important as the causes of war itself.
When I served, we constantly trained for a confrontation with Warsaw Pact nation’s and equipment, but that was almost 40 years ago.
It’s sorta sobering now to consider a missile traveling thousands of miles carrying enough stuff to take out a floating city like a carrier. We need to recognize this and counter that threat if we’re serious about protecting our country and her people.

We don't need to worry about threats to aircraft carriers. Some Russian dude at the Alamo said they're too powerful. And he knows a thing or two about aviation.
Survivability of infantrymen has a lot to do with training.. And the strategy of field commanders..Russia and China have a history of throwing a lit of infantry at a problem but they do not have a shortage of Military aged Males.. Our supply lines and training programs, in addition to having top of the line equipment, have taught our past field commanders to preserve soldiers.. But diversity training and/or reducing fitness requirements does nothing to impove infanty survivability..

Hence “FWIW” <“shrug”>

Actually, I dunno about this guy but San Antonio is a major military town that gets more than its share of overseas Military personnel.

I had a long conversation one time with a South Korean Senior Officer, visiting with an escort. I spoke with that guy for a least asid hour about Texas history, his escort was getting upset that he was getting off schedule.
Follow up with him when the ground freezes.

It is my understanding that China has several million surplus males thanks to the since-abandoned one child policy.

Russia, not so much, some commentators have suggested Putin was acting now while he still had the manpower to do it.

Here’s another take along those lines.

Even if things didn't go nuclear, I think a lot of people would be shocked by the carnage that todays technology would dish out in a no holds barred war between major powers these days.

It was bad enough 75 years ago.
Read RED STORM RISING
It's all "Wag the dog". Watch the movie.
Oh, yawn.
Most conventional war materials that we have are to hide the existence of waaayyy next level chit. The world would cry foul if this stuff is exposed.

I believe your statement is far more true than most of us know. If we were to find out about this stuff then we can assume that everything has gone to sh.it and war has come to the World again. “Rods from God” is child’s play compared to some of the top secret things that they’re improving on constantly.
He sounds like he knows too much.

Some of these armchair generals and admirals get testy. Their meds might need adjusting.

And you needed some Russian slob bouncing around San Antonio to explain that aircraft carriers are important.

LOL

Hey did you know aircraft carriers are important and that Russia won't gain anything in Ukraine?

A guy in San Antonio told me so.

LOL
