I hear folk using the term “Porch Monkey” without understanding its origins.

The term is correctly “Poarch Monkey” referring to the Poarch Creek Indian tribe most specifically in the Delta areas of Lower Alabama.

It came about with the cross breeding of the Africans and French with the tribe. Its a unique “Creole” breed of peoples.

My next education will be with the term “Raising Cain”

When the little apes get too fat and lazy to run around the yard, they become porch monkeys- - - -it's an evolution thing! When it gets too hot and humid out on the porch, they go inside, turn on the air conditioner and the computer, and spend all day trolling internet chat rooms.

The Poarch Tribe still exists. They have a reservation with a very nice truck stop on I65 there in south Alabam. Also, of course, a shiny new 20-story casino.

Over many thousands of miles of road, that was my favorite truck stop. Spent the night there hundreds of times.

I go there for lunch sometimes, I have a spread just west of there (65) on the Little River. When at my other spread north of there on the Burnt Corn I eat at the Shrimp Basket by Evergreen.

And you like to eat at the Shrimp Basket in Evergreen. Small world that is my second favorite truck stop, right across the interstate there at exit 96, Spirit Truck Stop.

I call those two "mom and pop" truck stops. All the drivers want to stay at the big chain places, Flying J and Pilot etc. I might pull in to that huge Loves at exit 93, and it is full, but I can go 3 miles to exit 96 and get a place to park at the mom n pop. I never ate at the Shrimp Basket, but they had pretty good food at the Spirit Truck Stop. Black mammies in there at 6am cooking sausage and scrambled eggs and grits. Southern cuisine, ya know.

Still doesn't explain where the monkey comes in the picture.

I always thought when it was too hot for sittin' on da porch, they went in and ate chilled watermelon and drank grape soda. WTF?

Yeah, I don’t believe that for a minute. On the other hand the commonly misunderstood term “jungle bunny” was originally about a family named Jingle who raised prize black rabbits for Florida state fair. When an especially nice specimen of black rabbit was spotted people would say, “There goes a nice jingle bunny.” Over time, “jingle” somehow became “jungle” and they started applying it to black people instead of just black rabbits.
