We call them hummingbird moths, a lot of people think they are hummingbirds.
Posted By: slumlord Re: What bug is this? - 09/20/22
Not sure if it is a sphinx moth. I’ll look dome more
Posted By: Caplock Re: What bug is this? - 09/20/22
Sphinx moth, hawkmoth, hummingbird moth are all correct. It is likely a Whitelined Sphinx but the picture is too fuzzy to be more specific.
Posted By: rainshot Re: What bug is this? - 09/20/22
I don’t know but when one of them runs into your chest on a motorcycle going 70mph at near dark you’ll have a hell of a time getting composed again.

Sphinx moth is what I would say too. A pic without the wings moving would make it easier.

Hummingbird moth or hawk moth , what tomato worms turn into.
Posted By: Caplock Re: What bug is this? - 09/20/22
Pictures really fuzzy but appears to be a White Lined Sphinx moth.
Posted By: BeanMan Re: What bug is this? - 09/20/22
Hyles lineata, White Lined Sphinx moth. Oneof of the hornworm but not a pest of tomato.
Posted By: MtnBoomer Re: What bug is this? - 09/20/22
Good luck.

Ask an Entomologist and He’ll say it is definitely a white lined sphinx moth Hyles lineata.

It’s a sphinx moth no question, the Family is Sphingidae, common names include hawk moth, hummingbird moth. There are as many as 75 species in North America. I’m sure this one is the white lined sphinx.
Posted By: 1minute Re: What bug is this? - 09/20/22
We too call them humming bird moths, but that's not the proper name

[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]

Hyles lineata, also known as the white-lined sphinx
Posted By: Birdwatcher Re: What bug is this? - 09/20/22
Seems late in the year. Sphinx moths overwinter as pupae and there’s nothing in the literature about them migrating south.

Doesn’t seem like there’s much chance of late-summer emerging ones like this to reproduce.

I've seen 'em here in coastal AK. Got pics and video. I definitely did a double-take, thinking it was a baby hummer . . . until I saw the proboscis.

Yep hummingbird moth, saw my first last year, pretty cool to watch and have to tell people coming around not to swat it with their hats.
Posted By: Rock Chuck Re: What bug is this? - 09/20/22
No doubt that it's a White Lined Sphinx moth. They're 1 of many sphinxes, probably the most common. Those arm sized tomato worms are the larvae of another sphinx that's much larger, also called a hornworm moth. All of them are called Hummingbird or Hawk moths.

Tomato worm moth, as wide as your hand:

I'm not sure what they're called around here but they're huge and sound exactly like a hummingbird. Real cool insect. You definitely notice them.

I’m not an Ento, but I’ve had to learn thousands of bugs for several exams and certifications for WDO and GRC licensing.

The wife is a master license holder/pest control operator.

We have to not only identify insects, but also their turds, their frass, their drill holes, their nests, etc, etc.

We rarely get hummingbirds here, but most years a bunch of these are mistaken for birds...

Now that is truly disgusting. Don't they make an industrial grade pesticide that kills everything on the planet so you don't have to know all this schist? (side effects include peeling skin, hair loss, vomiting, diarrhea, etc)

Speaking of excrement, maybe an honorary degree in Scatology?
