For those of us who were around in those days,

This is my vote above all others, for the most Iconic Song of the 1960s. I graduated High School in 1970.
From when it came out in 1964, right up thru 1970 when I graduated from High School this was played at ever school dance
and was ALWAYS the last dance of the night.

The band could be really good, but if they didn't do a good job on this song, they usually weren't asked to come back..
or the band could be not really that good, but if they did a darn good job on this song, they were ALWAYS asked back...

Enjoy the blast from our pass.

From 1964, Erick Burden and the Animals.:

As far as iconic goes, this would be my choice.

Genre?

Country - many will say Ring of Fire but I love this one as a 1b

1963 Louie Louie by the Kingsman. First R&R song to be investigated by the FBI as a threat to morality.

In the winter of 1963, a team of FBI agents spent their days hunched over portable record players, struggling to decode a message that threatened the morality of America’s youth.

It wasn’t from the Russians or Castro, but a band of Portland teenagers called The Kingsmen. And the song was Louie Louie.

“J. Edgar Hoover felt we were corrupting the moral fiber of America’s youth,” Mike Mitchell, guitarist and founding member of The Kingsmen, told me in 2016. “The FBI guys came to our shows, and they’d stand next to the speakers to see if we were singing anything off-colour. It was a different time.”
I submit "Blowin' in the Wind" by Dylan.
Lotsa iconic songs came out of the 1960's, but I'm gonna vote for Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth". It's like a prophetic prediction that is sadly coming true.

How can it be a threat to morality, when no one knows what the lyrics are or even know what the song is about.

Satisfaction!

Great version of a great song. I always knew that the House of the Rising Sun is a whorehouse. My brother was just telling me yesterday that this song is supposed to be sung from a female perspective, ie a gal who has thrown away her life as a whore.

Dude,

teenagers have secret codes and stuff the adults have to investigate to figure out what they talkin' about.

Now, it's emojis on the cell phones.

If you don't know, look up what an eggplant means to kids today.
Very very surprised by you folks.

No mention (that I've seen) of a song/artist that changed the sound of "rock and roll" forever:

good one!
Then there's this:

I'd guess these guys were pretty iconic for the times:

Graduated in 63, this was always the last song. Never had bands, just a good DJ
Last dance usually meant who you'd take home.

For the flower children it was:

For the lovers it was:

For the puzzy grabbers it was

For the dopers it was White Rabbit.

For the dreamers it was

Heard of that, never had to resort to it.

Yer damn right, it was not a very good song music wise, but if your mailing address was APO San Francisco...it pretty well summed up the situation.

My roommate Jim, had a draft notice, and so joined the Navy when in college doing a 6 year tour. In 1974 at age 29 he returned to finish out his senior year. He knew I liked Alice's Restaurant, and some of Arlo's other stuff. When it was Thanksgiving, the campus was closed for the week, and I had no where locally to go. My folks were living in Hawaii, the old man stationed at Hickham, closest relatives were back home in Virginia, so he invited me out to the Berkshires for the week.

Day after Thanksgiving, he took me by an old church about a mile from his place, and asked me if it looked familiar. It did but I couldn't place it...
It was the church from Alice's Restaurant. Then he said, we were going over to visit an old friend from school. Old New England House, built in the late 1700s, and old vintage Mercedes and a couple of older eclectic type cars.. and the lawn needed mowing. Knocked on the door and there is this old Black Butler. He knew Jim real well, spoke of being happy to see him, then he said he would check with "the master" to see if he was accepting guests.

He comes back, opens the front door to let us in, and I hear "Heeeeyyyyy Jimmie!!!" IN comes Arlo Guthrie stoned out of his mind. Jim introduces me, as his roommate at college, Arlo grabs my hand and shakes it profusely with "HHHHeeeyyy Johnnie! Glad to meet ya!"

Offered us the chance to hit the bong, but Jim and I passed... Arlo didn't. He was a cool host tho... but definitely needed a bath and a clean set of clothes...
At one time, I had the whole +/- 19 minutes of Alice's Restaurant committed to memory.

Due to a change in lifestyle, I did not do any 'concerts' between 1976 and when I saw Arlo Guthrie in 2015 at his 50th Anniversary "Alice's Restaurant' Tour at the 1894 Grand Theater in Galveston, Tx. A venue that holds 800 or so folk IIRC.

He pretty much told the story of his life from 1965 to at that time the present day. I came away with an different view and an new appreciation of the man. But it's late and that is a story for another time.
