Wifey and son enjoy it they can have it they told me it can be kept refrigerated for years
We do.
They are actually called Christmas Cakes...and are good with a brandy icing.
Wife said that if you use the proper amount of booze, you don't need to refrigerate it.
LOVE IT
I start adding brandy and rum about now, then a little every day.
I do! Collin Street Bakery in Texas makes the best!
My wife makes her family recipe Stollenbrot every year around this time. Similar to fruit cake but lighter weight bread.
Collin Street's is the only fruit cake that I have tried that is palatable. They have a version that is heavy on the pecans that I like.
About 20 or 30 seconds in the micro wave, then smear some peanut butter on.
I like it.
Not a pinky in the air Grey poupon finicky eater.
DGAF about what others consider good.
Go eat a old school mre menu # 22 shrimp jambalaya...
🤣🤣🤣
Fruit cake.
Roaches
Twinkies
Nuclear war proof....
As long as it's not bone dry and hard as a rock, I like it. Better if it's got plenty of brandy in it!
Delicious.
Alone, with Ice Cream, or with Coffee.
When I can find a good one, or make my own.
Good homemade fruitcake is great soaking in brandy. That chit you get mail order is inedible.
I like German Stollen, someone gave us a winternacht brand last year, it was pretty good.
Christmas here is Rum cake time and the wife makes a killer one.

They are fairly wonderful.
Collin Street Bakery in Corsicana, Texas, since 1896. I don’t normally like fruit cake but really like the ones from Collin Street.
I am probably one of the least picky eaters here and I hate fruit cake. Each to his own but my opinion is that it is a terrible waste of money. I ate fruitcake when I was a kid because I was hungry. Back then I ate anything I could find.
I eat it as well as Christmas pudding with hard sauce.

Gonna secretly try peanut butter on it now.
And won't say a word of "thanks holy schit that was excellent" to the homie...
🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️😔😔😄😄😄
I like worchestershire sauce on mine
Never as good as it sounds like it should be.

I'm with you, it is terrible stuff. It ranks right in there with lutefisk, torsk, and gefilte fish.

Yep. They don’t put that fake candied “fruit” in them. Real deal.
Not often, but I do like a well made fruit cake occasionally.
I make it in quantity ... I make the best. It's fricking God's food in my family.
What holds it together curious question

You forgot, banana nut - raisin bread with pecans. Yep. Horrible stuff.

Listen to these 2 gents. Excellent fare.
I just shipped 3 to friends.
Always had Claxton as a kid, so that’s what I get now.

One thing that sock puppet, eyeball, Jag doesn’t have to worry about is that the indians won’t bother anyone that’s touched.
Nope but panettone was always in the house growing up. It sucked as well but Pop's loved it.

I see what you did their.
My grandmother made fruitcake with brandy, she made it in a bundt pan. Kept it in a tin container with a shotglass full of brandy in the center. It was always moist and had a great brandy infused taste and aroma.

My wife’s aunt did the same thing, that stuff was good!!!!
My grandmother always soaked hers wi5h homemade wine , y the middle of Jan. A slice of it would give you a buzz, loved it!!!
I would paddle hundreds of miles for a Herter's fruitcake.
Excellent stuff. Redcliff Bakery makes a killer good one.
Just finished the last one I hoarded from last year while out hunting.
Chaw done on a chunk of it around the campfire while sipping Glenfiddich!
Wonder if you could sub out the brandy for Scotch.....
Jeff
Love it. I love having it around during hunting season. I'd wrap a big chunk up and take it to the woods with me (or fishing).
Great snack
It’s pretty good. Collin Street Bakery has samples in little cups for people to try while you’re standing in line. They also make an apricot pecan cake that’s good.
I can't stand candied fruit. Cakes that are made with natural sweeteners can be pretty good but that candied fruit is pot hole filler.
LOL For some reason tonight was the night I cut into one of my small Claxton Darks I purchased 11/19.
A bit buzzy on the tongue. Maybe fermented? I've had a few thin slices so far a pronounce it most excellent. These have real fruit. MAGA
I'd backstroke up a river of schidt for a slice of my mother-in-law's fruitcake. BUT............it's a recipe that does NOT include that candied fruit garbage. It's heavy on Brazil nuts and dates some other stuff.
Fruit + water + sugar = bliss
I don’t eat the organs out of the animals I kill, I give them to those that do though, and I don’t eat fruitcake…..like rattlesnake and other assorted vermin it is relegated to the “I’m starving and I need to survive the apocalypse” category of food hierarchy. 😁
It's schit. Absolute schit.
It's schit. Absolute schit.
Seriously how many of you fruit cake lovers buy them in ... let's say June?
Nobody? Yeah well, that's because they're schit...and everybody knows it.
The cooked fruitcake, not so much…
Ice box fruitcake? Ohhh yeaahhhh.
GamGam used to make it each Christmas.
Mix it up and put in back in the Nilla wafer box. Wrap in foil and put the whole brick in the freezer.
Pic i snagged off the interwebs.
Only ever seen it at TG&Y and that was in 19 and 78
I made 9 small ones last week, good recipe from a black woman in Little Rock Ark....
most fruit cakes would make good door stops..
I pour about a shot glass of Rye whiskey on top of a small loaf pan size cake, sounds like a lot but it's just about perfect.

Big Dave's got it right...... we call it 'Unbaked Fruitcake'.
Love fruitcake. The Grandma's brand (Beatrice?), sold through Cabelas has always been my favorite....until last month. Got the urge for one last month...dry as a brick. I imagine sales dropped during the plaque, and they sold me last years inventory. They should have written it off their taxes as a loss instead of selling it to repeat customers...good way to go out of business.
I'm not big on raisons, or dates.
I do! Collin Street Bakery in Texas makes the best!
I like Collin Street Bakery fruit cakes, but everybody in the family makes fun of me for liking them. Somebody gave us a Hostess fruit cake, probably the worst fruit cake that I've ever eaten. I can see where someone who had only eaten inferior fruit cake wouldn't like it if the Hostess brand was representative of inferior fruit cakes.
I'd rather eat grass.....
Used to have to sell claxtons as a Christmas fund raising project for a children's home........
In order to sell it, one needed to really stress how the proceeds went to the children's home.......
I always wound up having to buy a good bit and just give it away.......
I'm not big on raisons, or dates.
I agree with you for once.
Well I'll admit, I love it...
bet in my life, I've had more alcohol consumption from Fruitcake, than from anything down at the liquor store.
Just ate about a pound slice of it for breakfast. The old lady soaks it in Rum.
II like fruitcake.
When I lived in deep snow country I kept one stashed in the truck with my "stranded" gear. Loads of calories, long long shelf life. In the spring, I would eat it when trout fishing.
I recall seeing a piece about some monks someplace that make what is supposed to be an amazing fruitcake. Can't remember where the Monastery was.
Can't remember where the Monastery was.
Washington state, I believe? Bought one. It wasn't that great.
Fruit cake!
Hell no! Not since Eilenberger's in Palestine, Texas quit making fruitcakes!

^^^^THIS!!!^^^^
The "Deluxe Pecan Cake" was a staple in my home on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's when I was a kid.
Absolutely delicious if you're into that sort of thing.
There may be other regional favorites that are just as good, but none BETTER! Collin Street pecan cakes are shipped all over the world!

That would be their "Deluxe" Pecan Cake!
None other graced our table during holidays.

I like stollen bread. There's a local bakery that makes it, but it is pretty pricey.
Fruit cake a pretty good, not my first choice for dessert but I'm not a dessert kinda person.
Never seen or heard of proper fruitcake in the US.
1. Should be dark
2. Fruit soaked in booze, usually OP Rum for a month or so before baking
3. Mother knows best, store bought is a very long second.
Process begins late Sept or Oct and cake is ready for Christmas though it is not a seasonal cake and can be had any time.
I love fruit cake but couldn't stomach what is sold here as it is anything but.
The fruitcake from Southern Supreme is really good but it's more of a nut cake than fruit... It's good!
Went back to Cabela's to check on the "one star" review I left for on the Grandma's fruitcake I bought a month ago...IMAGINE my surprise, my review doesn't show up in the review section. There's a four star reviews from twelve days ago...but the newest one star review is four years old. I guess Cabela's doesn't publish poor reviews newer than 4 years...I'm shocked!
I love fruit cake. Homemade or the claxton brand, does not matter.
Yes I love fruitcake. Some are excellent, and some are unfit for human consumption.
My wife makes fruit cake cookies which are a variation of the classic cake.
They are very good, quite heavy and never get thrown out. I ate the whole batch one year while watching the World Juniors. She was ticked so I had to make another batch myself. I ate them too.
Wait, am I to be referencing my wife?
Mmmm, boy!
To the original question, my Mom would always get a Claxton fruitcake or two at Christmas, never cared for it until I got older. Can't say I've ever had a really bad fruitcake (even the military issue ones) but it's not high on my list of favorite foods.
Have a good recipe for Scottish shortbread which is mostly a big pile of butter and flour with minimal sugar. It literally melts in your mount so will eat that or give some out as a Christmas present.
Mmmm, boy!
I had to eat c-rats all the time in the Army.hated the efruit cake .chocolate nut cake and pound cake was great

My MIL made those and now my wife. They called them "Melting Moments".
A classic at our Christmas table.
I pan fried (toasted) a few slices of my 3 yo Claxton this morning, slathered on some butter and then some maple syrup. Nice compliment to the pancakes. Yes, the fruit was still real fruit! OMG.
We do.

No one in my family has ever eaten one nor will they ever..............period
Do yourself a favor and order from
Southern Supreme. You can thank me later.
growing up in West Virginia in the 70's . for Christmas ,mom would always make what she called a one month cake . she would add a few ingredients then put it in the fridge for a few days or week ,then add some more ,back to the fridge , on and on .it was a dark, moist ,rich fruit cake love it ,store bought fruit cakes are terrible compared to it
There are so many variations on fruit cake that it runs the gamut from garbage to delicious. As a kid my maternal grandmother bought some kind of fruit cake from a German bakery that was delicious.
