No. Prince was the musical genius, tenfold. He played 27+ instruments. Wrote the music, lyrics, and ran all of the equipment. Chances are, there a several songs you enjoy and have no idea he had a role in their creation. He was a vault full of unreleased material as well. Shame really.

Want a taste, check out this video of Prince, Petty, Winwood, Lynne, and George Harrison's son, paying tribute with My Guitar Gently Weeps. Some showmanship by Prince, but that was his style and his smile shows his lack of arrogance. You can't argue the skill and it doesn't even touch the pinnacle of his ability. Other musicians would visit him in the studio, hoping to jam, figuring they'd play "his music". Prince sat down and started ripping Led Zepplin, or whatever music the guest might be associated with. Just a cool cat really.

The story here, as Petty tells it, is that the adhoc band of greats met to practice for the awards show. As they played guitar gently weeps, Prince was to have a bit of a solo, but another guitarist played through and Prince just laid back. Afterwards, the producer was stressing, saying they had to do it again, so Prince could rehearse. Prince just shook it off and said, "it'll be fine". Indeed it was. If you don't watch the entire video, jump in around 3:11. Petty and Prince are polar opposites, one mellow, the other a showman, but Tom clearly appreciated what he was witnessing. Harrison Jr probably became a bus drive after watching Prince. George was probably looking down saying, "ok, that's enough of that!"

Count me in as a fool then.

I’m convinced his music is generational. The 80’s sucked musically. Against that backdrop, I guess maybe I can see why people like his music.
Posted By: Teal Re: Michael Jackson - 02/05/23
He was an entertainer and could put on a show. Some of his songs are the nostalgia soundtrack for a lot of people, not me as he wasn't my thing.

I bet he looks just like he did in Thriller right now.

MJ’s music is definitely not generational. Bring up Spotify and you’ll see two of his top five most popular tunes you’ve never heard of. Tik Tok has made them popular. Madonna has the same thing going on.

The Prince While My Guitar vid is kinda funny. The solo itself is just mediocre. It’s Prince’s showmanship that sells it 100%.

I beg to differ. I've been a fan of Quincy Jones since his Walking in Space album from 1969. Now there's a musical genius.

As far as Michael Jackson goes, King of pop music, for what that's worth. Fantastic dancer and incredibly inventive. I saw the documentary, This Is It, about preparing for the show at the O2 stadium in London that never happened. He was 50 years old and still dances in every number, putting in more dancing than backup dancers less than half his age.

As far as his personal life goes, he was weirder than a wagonload of weasels.

He was so rich, he could afford to hire his own private doctor to come to his mansion, and give him a shot of Propofol.
Posted By: simonkenton7 Re: Michael Jackson - 02/08/23
Along those lines, I was getting a colonoscopy, it happened to be a month after Michael died. The anesthetist asked me if I wanted anesthetic, or wanted to do it straight with no drugs. Of course, the medical community was abuzz with the fact that an MD had administered this drug in a private residence, as it is supposed to be given only in an Operating Room. In fact the doc was later brought up on criminal charges.

I replied "I want the stuff Michael Jackson had. I want the Propofol."

Little medical joke.

The anesthetist laughed her ass off.

This seems quite interesting. Were there any singular pieces of wisdom or extraordinarily intelligent ideas or actions originating in his mind? Please describe some of those.

Kindly name the 27+ instruments you cited. Thanks.
Posted By: Higginez Re: Michael Jackson - 02/09/23
Having actually seen Prince play live (on a whim I might add), I can attest to the genius thing. His guitar playing and showmanship blew me away and it was six months later that I realized the true genius of the man. His album Musicology was the number one selling record of the year. We received a copy when we walked into the show as he included its sale with the purchase of a ticket and toured until he had sold enough to beat out even McCartney and Dave Mathews!

John Blackwell on the drums was fugging CRAZY to watch. RIP

You are quite literally asking for someone to describe thoughts and ideas originating in someone elses mind.

Too funny.

MJ did pop. That’s the whole story. Being an opinionated knuckle dragger I reserve the right to detest pop. Nothing going for it. Spell it backwards it’s still pop. If you played it backward it’d probably sound the same.

You may be trying way to hard to to find your "too funny" crack. Or, it may only be funny to you because you do not have the intellectual capacity to fathom what was being stated, and then asked.

Throughout history normal people have been able to understand and describe thoughts and ideas originating in the minds of others because they have read and heard and seen and touched those things that originated in the minds of others. How could you possibly claim that a person has a genius tenfold mind if you had no understanding of the products of that mind? If you still don't get it, try the example.

Poster stated: "musical genius tenfold".
Commonly in our culture, the term "genius" is used to describe superior/extraordinary intellectual power (in the mind of a person) that produces extraordinary outcomes - creative/inventive/analytical/descriptive - as revelations that break new ground, open new understandings, create things very important where previously there was none, etc.
Those outcomes are palpable - perceptible/understandable/touchable- by other human beings. Those recognition encounters transmit the evidence of genius. Real Stuff, not simply some opinion !
So, the responder requested to receive: "pieces of wisdom or extraordinarily intelligent ideas or actions originating in his mind". Examples were requested - some specific outcomes/products of that "genius tenfold" mind - some revelations, some new understandings, some newly created actions/objects. Examples - hard evidence - as if you were reading Einstein's own writing on his Theory of Relativity - which originated in his mind.

Not too funny at all! Not your "quite literally" phony mind-reading thought - but asking for examples of the outputs of the "genius tenfold" mind.

Kindly hear this - written above is an effort to respond knowledgeably and possibly helpfully to your post - even with the suspicion that your post was merely intended to be snarky and insincere. You got the benefit of the doubt, this time. If low- witted snark is your game, that can be engaged as well.

OK - you opt for more snark - you lose. You have zero knowledge about what I really am and yet you are stupid enough to keep trying your meaningless jabs, one after another. For a while, it seemed best to not stoop to your level and to let your silly personal posts go by, with the thought that you might just give it up. It appears as if you cannot resist eventually trying another personal shot. This time, you pushed that very weak jab and have made the mistake of dropping it as you backed out. Now you get to eat the straight right.

I do not know, and have no interest in knowing, what you really are. Here, you are recognized only by the content and style of what you post. So, at this place, you are simply one of the small number of apparently life-empty attention whores who provide little or nothing of useful substance or thought, but spout your very narrow and biased opinions/observations. However, rarely if ever do you provide actual knowledge or hard experience to back them up. Your ego-serving ramblings paint you as a pretender.

If you really want to take this topic on and eat some evidence, go ahead and ask for comment and expansion on the glowing examples that live in your past posts. Easy ammo supply. There is no joy to be taken in such a task, for it would not be a fun enterprise. Then again, there could be some satisfaction in the results. Your choice - smart or snark?

So, what is that? Eight paragraphs of word salad?

Music is hard to understand for book learned folks but it truly is funny to sit back and watch them try and make sense of it.

Keep Googling.
Posted By: Dutch Re: Michael Jackson - 02/09/23
If you look at Prince for technical innovation, a PARTICULAR kind of technical innovation, as defined by academic standards, that might be a way to deny his genius.

If you take a broader look at aspects of genius, interpretation, technical ability, social support of fellow artists, innovative use of existing techniques and giving expression to emotions and anxieties drifting through society, there isn’t a need for debate.

Like Micheal Jackson, and many artists, almost by definition, his personal life was a bit of a disaster, as was a good part of his professional life. Yet he still contributed positively to many, many lives.

Just keep snarking and faking - seems like that is all you have left in your quiver - and then you pose a fake diversionary question? Fake because you know exactly what that post is.
Don't try to deflect the issue to understanding music. That will not work - that post has zero to do with music. It is a reasoned and constructed fist to your kisser with some facts - instigated by your incessant jumping into various topics/posts with vapid personal wisecracks, like some schoolyard bully. My inquiries regarding Prince were not directed to you, but to the poster who talked about genius tenfold and 27+ instruments. That poster has not responded with the info.

But, you grabbed that as another opportunity to go ad hominem. Now, we are on that topic - you and your penchant. Once you have fully dropped your psychological pants here - for any observer who perchance might be interested - the effort could go into exploring and comparing knowledge and understanding in music, acoustics, or other actually worthwhile topics. But, at the moment, the faker has been confronted.

What will it be - more of your snarky jabs, or will you go to your room? Choose your tune.

Back when Dale Earnhardt Sr. was trying to catch that phag Jeff Gordon (and failing frequently) the joke around all the NASCAR tracks went something like this- - - - - -"What's the difference in Dale Earnhardt and Michael Jackson? They both chase little boys, but, Michael catches them!"

Some very good observations there - in the personal tastes of some folks, the guy played a significant role for a while. The earlier inquiry is not intended to deny anything - it is an attempt to understand why one or more posters would claim as they have.

Snark basket nearing empty - but still dodging the reality.

While in college with very little $$, I worked the 11pm to 7am shift at a private mental hospital. There we observed that some inmates were stimulated to hilarity by very strange events in their heads, and that their aberrant sense of self-entertainment had no relevance to the normal world. Feel free to laugh on, fool - and maybe explain hilarious music as well. Meanwhile, why not just go to your room?

Are you still flailing around trying to find just one more weak false snark? Fail !!! You have reduced yourself to repeating one irrelevant reference - like a frustrated little 9 year-old girl.

Do we need a test to ascertain that you are not running drunk or doped?

Here goes (now, be fair to your self-test - you are not allowed to Google for the answer): Within three minutes of this post, reply with your brief explanation of acoustical reverberation and also cite the factor that most commonly leads to degradation. If you even come close (on your own - no searching out the answer), I will then help you stick your nose into some false reverb.

Your not even close to understanding what a Leslie speaker is and you're gonna give me a lesson on reverb?

Keep Googling.

Well Dumbell - you took at least 10 minutes, managed to post only two repetitive snarks - and answered nothing about reverberation.

You simply push out silly personal jabs that amount to zero. You have made it clear that you know zero about acoustical reverberation. Or, you haven't yet searched out a source you can understand - or you are drunk/doped. Never mind - done with that. Now, to dispense with this mess.

History: You opened your smelly bag of personal attack way back there with your derogatory reply - to my posting that I had failed to notice that an organist was playing through a Leslie. Get that again - my post stating something I had missed while listening to a recording. You were greedy to be a snark even then - tried to claim that I know nothing about a Leslie. That history is clear in previous posts on some music thread.

What a jerk !

Finale: As my grand dad might have put it: "I was listening to, playing alongside, helping transport, and helping repair Leslie (originally Vibratone) units before you started picking your nose." And, I was. Because you do not understand the facts of acoustical reverberation in a live space, the aspects of decay and particularly as those affect reverb time, and some other related factors - you have no way to fathom why someone might refer to something by saying "like a false reverb". I will make it quick for you. The "reverb" emanating from a Leslie setup is not a natural live acoustical reverberation. The inventor used his previously gained knowledge/experience to create a doppler effect with spinning components - a simulation of natural reverberation that could be created mechanically. "False Reverb".

By now you have fully exposed your ignorance as well as greed to be noticed. In some ways I am embarrassed to have cooperated in dragging your crass carcass this far. No doubt, some folks on here have been bored by, or even decried, this mess - if even they took the time to read it. For my part in the silly encounter, to others I say "sorry". Done with this.

Suggestion: decide what you want for the future here.
