I bought a Millett or some such rest that you could put on your window and place a sandbag over to shoot gophers from the truck. I lost one and haven't been able to find another one, so I decided to try and build one. By the time I had a couple made, I only had about $16.00 in materials and $150.00 in labor. It was cheaper to just buy the original, but when you can't find them, you make them.

I started with 2 inch PVC pipe and cut a slot the fuill length of the pipe...

[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

Then I cut some thin pine lath to put in the top of the pipe for a window stop...

[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

Then I filled the pipe with spray foam to make it solid to put a groove in it to slide on to the window and hold it in place...

[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

Then I cut the foam with a knife to put a slot in the mount to go on the window.

[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

Then I rolled the pipe insulation out and pinned it in a box to keep it open to apply some spray adhesive...

[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

Then I wrapped the PVC with the insulation...

[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

Then to the field to test it and it worked perfectly.

0 experience with road hunting.
If it's legal... whatever....

Have shot out of vehicles or from riding on top of vehicles under other circumstances.
No need for a rest....
Posted By: CCCC Re: Window Rest For Pickup - 03/06/23
Nice work, and quite a bit of it. There were times/circumstances where I would be prepared to shoot from the cab. I simply made an adjustable sling and hung it from a little hook arrangement screwed into the area above the window.

Serious question (from the east coast).

Why would one ever need to shoot from inside a truck?
Posted By: Buck52 Re: Window Rest For Pickup - 03/06/23
I made window rest by cutting a 5” piece of 2x4 off. Then it it twice across the bottom it’s a skill saw 3 1/2” deep to fit down over window. I then glued https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1019549984?pid=329075 to 2x4 and used it since the lat 70’s. The rest was a leather one Like in you pic. Takes about 15 minutes to build and worked great.

I've always thought a shooting range should have F250 doors and bench seats for stations, to make practice and annual sight-in more closely resemble field conditions.
Posted By: TRnCO Re: Window Rest For Pickup - 03/06/23
Why would one ever need to shoot from inside a truck? Because it's very effective. Lot of times the rodents won't dive down their holes when the truck gets close. Works really well if the driver is right handed and the guy in the passenger side is a lefty.
Not that I'd do anything like that;)

A cut and split foam swimming pool noodle works ok, on a window.
Cheap and can be made with a pocket knife in a couple of minutes

A noodle cut into thirds and then taped together to form a triangle makes a quick lightweight rest for across the pickup toolbox

Decent question. There are circumstances, at least in the big west, where terrain, position, timing, weather, etc. make for an impromptu shooting situation.

Prairie dogs seem to be on the menu. Drive around a 20-30k acre ranch and shoot em as you come upon em.

Won't work anywhere near what the PVC pipe rest will. Keep trying.

You will find out that that noodle won't last an afternoon in the gopher fields...

It's a Montana thing. We used to shoot all of our Cottontails from the vehicle. Usually from the road !!

Posted By: kennymauser Re: Window Rest For Pickup - 03/06/23
When I used to have a gun shop I sold a lot of rests that mounted on the window. A local guy made them (kind of like Shrapnels) and I sold them for him! They were quite popular with the out of state customers laugh laugh

I know of several guys that shot Coyotes from the Interstate 90 while commuting back and forth to work in Billings! Now I 90 is too busy.

Probably 90% of the Antelope have been shot from a vehicle. (Usually over the hood).

Not wanting to start a pissing contest, but shrapnel is correct as far as WY goes. I have had to use such a style of shooting since 72. If it hadn’t been legal I’d have been denied a very effective way for me to shoot.

Went around the world to make something simple! Just go to your local ass hardware and pick up some foam pipe wrap; same s hit you use to keep water lines from freezing! Its already split for fitting over vehicle windows!

It’s obvious you’ve never tried that because that the foam pipe insulation won’t take the abuse of sitting on top of a window and the rifle being rested on it before it comes completely apart.

None of this works well that I've seen, because the vehicle keeps moving around on its suspension. Except for Elk, which doesn't require all that much precision.

Nope again, that was my first attempt. That insulation doesn't withstand the rigors of resting a rifle on the foam.

If I recall correctly, these were all "window kills". Precision was not needed though, as the targets were not gopher-sized.

Precision can be had from the truck window. I have shot too many sub 1" groups while my rifle rested on the drivers side mirror. If one has not tried it they would be very surprised at how steady you can get with an elbow stuffed in the steering wheel and a rifle over a jacket or towel on the mirror.

A 6000# truck doesn't wiggle much unless it's windy.

Right? Why they all gotta spin the window cranks and shove their barrels out? Suburban looks like a porky pine.

For those that have never spent any of their youth in a vehicle in the spring time assisting farmers with ground squirrels or puttering through mountain meadows plinking you missed out.

Either with a buddy in an old farm truck, curling the edge of pastures, competing for the greatest lift, the most in a row with a single bullet or any of a number of trick shots… you missed out.

Or with a load of the family in an old landcruser shifted into granny low crawling through the mountains plinking heads and hazing any one unfortunate enough to miss. Definitely not a safe space- you missed out.

For those that denounce the unsportsmanship, tout your high morals after you run empty defending a trophy kill from his cannibal buddies.

Farmed used to pay .10 a tail which almost paid for the bullets.

I have shot hundreds and hundreds of prairie dogs from the window of my truck, my hunting companion has probably shot an equal amount from the window on HIS side of the truck. If I get tired of that, might get a little fancier:

Not on public roads but out on your own private dirt roads in the field it is widely accepted.

E-M-P-T-Y!

Not sure that action open is required, but no ammo in the gun at all.
We don't have to case guns, some states do.

I'm told loaded a loaded magazine is a loaded gun if both are in a car in Maryland.
Rumor is a buttstock ammo holder is verboten there.
Don't know for certain about MD.

It's a tricky topic.

Open, or not,
Cased or not,
Fully loaded, loaded mag, shoot from car.....
Sure easy to see how one could get in trouble.
Especially a Good Old Boy not experienced in different states.
