Oboy...here we go https://www.insideradio.com It now seems Ford is looking to phase out AM radio options in “most new and updated models.” The company earlier said it would not include AM in its 2023 F-150 Lightning EV trucks, which resulted in a response from Pete Gaynor, the former Acting Secretary of Homeland Security and administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

“Experts at The Federal Emergency Management Agency — the agency I used to oversee — have been clear: eliminating the AM radio will put public safety at risk,” he wrote in an opinion piece published by the Detroit News.

Seven former FEMA officials have asked the federal government to help keep AM radios in electric vehicles. In a letter to U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, the group petitioned the government to seek assurances from automakers to maintain AM radios in EVs, arguing that the band is vital to the federal National Public Warning System. In a separate letter, FCC Commissioner Nathan Simington expressed his support of the former FEMA directors.

Upon the news that Ford was dropping AM from its Mustang models, ARS Technica asked the automaker for clarification. A Ford spokesperson told the publication, "A majority of U.S. AM stations, as well as a number of countries and automakers globally, are modernizing radio by offering internet streaming through mobile apps, FM, digital and satellite radio options,” the statement read. “Ford will continue to offer these alternatives for customers to hear their favorite AM radio music, news, and podcasts as we remove amplitude modulation—the definition of AM in this case—from most new and updated models we bring to market."

In reaction to the latest development on the discontinuation of AM radio in Ford vehicles, NAB Senior VP of Communications Alex Siciliano tells Inside Radio, “There’s no question that AM radio plays a critical role in informing Americans and keeping them safe; it is the backbone of the Emergency Alert System,” he said. “This is why numerous policymakers and FEMA representatives have sounded alarm bells for automakers. We are certain that Ford does not want to alienate the nearly 48 million Americans who listen to AM radio, and we’ll continue working closely with the Alliance for Automotive Innovation and individual manufacturers to keep this important service in cars.”

LOL.

Yeah, it's such a bother to not turn it on... laugh
Had nothing to do with conservative talk radio. Actually more Demonrat sports radio and Urban News radio will be impacted more if you look at the issue that way.

Wouldn't shock me if this isn't coming from Ford's radio supplier more than Ford. They're saying they don't want to bother with it but if Ford wants - they will. For a price....
I listen to AM all the time. Mainly because the FM music stations play the same damn songs over and over and over and over and over and over......

I agree with the above sentiments. We're in a civil war.

Sorry to rain on this schit show, but you do all have a cell phone. And if you have a cell phone you can access all your AM stations there and usually if you have an auto radio with wifi or a jack you can play all your AM radio stations through your auto's stereo speakers.

Every several months I switch to AM radio out of the weird blend of curiosity and nostalgia that drives some of my decisions. I can usually last between 2 1/2 and 3 minutes. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems the ratio of advertising to content is about 4:1 and the “personalities” are raving lunatics. I have little or no interest in talk radio so, correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t all that content just as available on FM radio?

I like my satellite radio. I can go on a thousand mile trip and never lose a station I like or have to locate something exceptable while dealing with interstate traffic several hundred miles from home.

If you don't listen to it, why are you glad?
Isnt it as simple as not turning it on?

Oh yeah, thats so much simpler than just turning on the radio.

Bought one last year. Nice truck, except for the sealed transmission bs, and the lack of gauges, nothing good about the pushbutton to start it, and dont mention the radar in the grill.
It is a nice truck though.

Conspiracy to silence the right - tho the left as has many if not more of a voice on AM than the right....
Bought a F-150 new back in the fall of 2016 when they were clearing them out for the 2017. Over 25% off the sticker price. Was a good deal and the nicest truck I ever have owned ,ride , comfort, reliable, fuel economy, power and torque when you need it. The 5.0 l v-8 with steel cyl sleeves then they fugged that up in 18 or 19 by eliminating the sleeves. 10 spd tyranny what was wrong with the 6 spd besides it being sealed.? Not to mention electronic everything which means it costs a pile to maintain it if you keep it longer than 5-6 years. All. In the name of progress. 5 to 6 times a week I have some asswipe trying to sell me an extended warranty. Ford has it in their business model that they only need to pay attn. to customers who have more money than sense. Fug the rest of us..The defrost function quit working while back. The actuator to switch from heat to defrost went bad $ 140.oo+ to replace it, luckily for me my truck has a column shift and no counsel to have to remove for that repair, would have been over $600 then. The f-150 sits alot in the drive while I drive my 95 tacoma or my 2003 Bonneville they run cheap. Only really need the f-150 to pull my travel trailer or boat trailers. I like driving it but will never buy another one, I hope. Buying a new vehicle has been fugged ever since Reagan pushed accelerated depreciation rules on vehicles for business use. Screwed the private buyer with no write off into forever. ELIMINATING the AM band just another decision in a long line of dumbfockitude of Ford decisions..mb

Lumping all of Ford's F series trucks together makes them the best selling vehicle in the US.
It will save about $5 on the cost of a truck and cost the consumer ~$25/month to replace with a subscription service.

If I were ordering a new pickup, I would get the no radio option, or the base radio option, then replace it with an aftermarket sound/navigation system of my choosing.
no matter what they say, it's always about control
Fugg.

How I'm gonna get the farm report now?!

On a serious note, they can sh.it can the FM too while we're making cuts. Nothing worth a sh.it on either on.
Oh my

Gonna miss those Hog Futures at 5am, Swap n Shop, and the obits.
FM has all that debble music and stuff.
I dont care if they have it or not , cd player and XM can go as well. I would welcome an option with just a way to play and listen off the internet or bluetooth. It ain't a deal breaker either way for me.

My first Ford only had AM. Was an 84 bullnose. The cheapest Ford you could get in 84 and still have 4x4.

Regular cab, vinyl seats/floor, 300 I6, 4 speed where 1st was granny. Manual everything (windows/hubs/transferase). Was a PEACH but the motor wasn't great and the 6mpg wasn't great as a HS kid. I paid 3k for it in 94.

NEVER should have sold it but traded it in on an 88 Toyota. Got 3k for it on trade in 96.

Possibly one of the most bullet proof 1/2 ton trucks made. Had a 2wd myself, 86 or 87 model.

These are the same crowd that thought the end of VHS cassettes was a government plot to end the production of home made porn movies.

People want us to believe they'd rise up and take back the government from ner-do-well's also complain about extra steps (maybe) to listen to the radio.

Committed to the cause they are. So long as they don't have to do anything.

Not sure where you live Walt, but sometimes I can't even get a signal to make or receive a phone call on my cell phone...............and that's without being out in the woods around here.

We don't have towers every 5 miles.

And what am I supposed to do when I see the flashing lights on the road info signs telling me to go to AM 950 for info to see if the road ahead is open? Stop the car and turn my phone on, find the station, and play it through the car radio?

From a sales point of view you and those in your situation are so insignificant as to be ignored.

And really, when was the last time you actually stopped and tuned to AM 950 to see if the road was closed? I never have, always just go slow and inspect things closely when I’m doubt.

This whole thing will be a big nothing whichever way it turns out. Either they do away with AM in cars, and if Ford does so will GM and Dodge, or the government makes them keep it and nobody listens to it. At the end of the day, 99 percent of people’s lives won’t be changed.

Actually, it's only been a couple of years at the most when I saw the flashing lights on and switched from FM to AM and I didn't have to stop the truck to do it. Signs in our area are a good fifteen miles or so from passes and other areas where the roads might be closed due to snow or mud slides and such. Much better to not have to drive all the way to where they're making one turn around, just go the 10 miles or so home instead of starting out on a 100 mile plus trip.

And yeah, we get screwed out here about the being insignificant/ignored. The cell providers, as sort of "public utilities", are supposed to provide service to rural, under-served communities like ours. But, seeing as how the definition of rural in some cases includes Redding and Chico, each of which has a population of 80k-100k, the providers put new towers over the hill from us and leave our county of 10k souls trying to find service.

I'll take it though, as we don't have many homeless, our sheriff understands "rural", and I have mostly nice neighbors on one side of our property and NO neighbors on the other three sides.
Somebody in design needs a time out.
What's the problem... Spend a hundred grand on a new rig, but bring your own radio.

No service or minimal where the new house is going. Will have a landlines and very few will.have the number, at least until scammers find it.

Cousin says get a cell booster, I said wtf for?

AM radio = Antiquated Modulation

The target demographic age group = 60 to dead
Bout the only thing on AM Radio around here is a bunch of fuggin wetback Mariachi Bullschitt.

I mostly listen to CD’s and music on my ITunes playlist.

Haven’t listened to talk radio since Rush died.
The electric motors and such can interfere with AM reception. Our pug in pacifica gets interference over the am. It's a whinning noise that changes with acceleration.

Although the first thing I thought of was this is an attempted to stop conservative radio.

I wish the radios and such weren't all integrated with everything else. I miss being able to put a good high quality aftermarket head unit in. I still have an old pioneer premier with burr brown converters that sounded so good I've though about buying an older car just so I have something to run it in.

Do modern car radios still use a magnet wrapped in a copper coil as the AM antenna?

F u c k!

I bet your supper/breakfast sucked.
All AM here is black revival stations.
I don’t even listen to FM any more. Mostly pandora with some XM thrown in at times. Watch 50/50 cable and streaming services. Haven’t used a landline in years.
On a $75k pickup truck, how much money is saved by deleting AM functionality from the radio?? Three dollars???

how am I going to get KAFF-930?
I've never listened to AM radio, the reception and fidelity is awful.
Will Electric Cars Kill AM Radio?

There’s an interference problem from EV motors that’s bumping AM bands off of electric vehicle dashboards. Radio over 5G may offer a solution.

The AM band in particular is subject to electromagnetic interference from electric motors, which generate frequencies comparable in wavelength to AM radio signals.

Many EVs have abandoned the radio band, while others—like the Ford F-150 Lightning—did include it but will soon cease to.

A global radio aggregator and streaming service called TuneIn offers a solution, by delivering feeds from some 100,000 stations over a vehicle’s 5G wireless network access.

A proper Ford doesn't need a radio, you won't be able to hear it:

I listen to 1520 AM radio every day. It’s my favorite old country music radio station.
