Wifey and I argue about this sometimes. I say Foreigner, she says Styx. I like them both, but Foreigner had more hits!!!

I never could get into them either.

Unfortunately, most of your "country" today is Nashville's Hair Band phase.

I’d agree with that. You have to listen to Red Dirt music to hear anything that resembles old country
Music critics of the day ripped Styx to shreds.

But, they were the first group to ever have 4 platinum albums.

Yeah, and Bud Light used to sell a lot of beer . . .
Styx has my vote, especially their early stuff. This is a great one from their second album most have never heard.

I'll go with Styx. Tommy Shaw is a helluva singer.
FFDP
Have never crossed the river, and my contact with those from other countries is quite limited. I have had friendly experiences with Canadians.
I think they both had good songs in the old days but overall I would have preferred Foreigner... haven't listened to any such music in 30 years or more
Course this is a great one too...
probably better suited for TheFire.

In my mind they were referring to a 19-3

Foreigner, but I don't like anything they did after 79-80.
Foreigner for Lou Gramms voice alone!

I will say I saw foreigner with their new singer, he is really good, great voice similar to Gramms, but foreigner is just a cover band now. I think Mick Jones only plays with them if its a real big and important show. He doesnt do the tours.

LOL
Foreigner

My two favs

Tommy Shaw was better with the Damn Yankees
As both suck extremely heavy, quite indifferently cleaned azz, I'll go with Fer'ner 'cause last song on the Sopranos.

That was Journey.

Styx was probably the better band but I liked Foreigner better. Saw them both in concert a zillion years ago. Journey was better yet. Those were pretty wild times for a small town boy. I just gave away all the old vinyl albums from the 70's. It was quite a stack and brought back some memories.

FULLY agree! One of my most hoped for reunions.
I wouldn't go see either for free. The radio was plastered with both back in the day. That did it for me.

You know you're right.
Easy, Styx had Tommy Shaw, Foreigner didn't.

Tommy Shaw is a hell of a musican.

Don't get me wrong Foreigner is a great group but nobody in it approaches Shaws talent.
Here's a great documentary on Styx. Behind the Music. 43 minutes.

https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x28z7ee

Tommy and the gang wanted to rock out and they didn't like "Babe" and some of the other Dennis DeYoung soft stuff.
Styx.....before Dennis De Young flipped his lid and leaned Techno anyway.
Foreigner on last tour….allegedly
They both suck.

Got to visit with both Mick Jones and Tommy Shaw at different times. Both were real nice fellas that didn't act or put on airs. Both bands were really good in my opinion. Too bad there's so much crap being put out now. Interesting fact is that alot of 20's kids are listening to bands from the 70's, 80's and 90's.

both were/are horrid. Almost as irritating to listen to as heavy metal. Almost
Toto vs Survivor... Go!

LOL.

Agreed, Styx only had a few hits with my favorite being Come Sail Away, but Foreigner had many more.

Hot. 92 Sat. 80's today
I thought both Styx & Foreigner were great in their best years. Styx lost my interest as they started moving toward POP & I don't remember about Foreigner but think they just faded away at the time.

Both had great songs IMO. As said, Foreigner likely had more. Gosh, so much rock to listen to at the time!!!

We had mid 80's the other day.

Rain, sleet, and snow this morning.

Must be Spring on the Modoc.

Good to see you still around.

Yeah, my daughter had snow in Sparks this morning.

I actually saw Styx at the Silver Legacy in Reno with her a few years ago.
It was damn good. Tommy still has it. I like Foreigner too.
Big thumbs up.

Wife is driving down to Reno this weekend. Some choir gig her sister is in. Fortunately just rain predicted, or a three + hour drive in the snow would have probably kept her home.

Now the whippets and I can do cool scheidt! ANd hopefully not get caught.
Tough call for me.

Liked them both.

Agreed Geno ! Boston & Steely Dan we’re both much better IMO. Hard to top Boston’s 1st big album, “Boston”, released in 1976.

Between Foreigner & Styx, I’ll take Foreigner. Saw them live in 1979. Hell of a show.

Honestly chlin,

I'm not a giant fan of any of them. Don't believe I ever bought any of their music. I did listen too it on the radio most times, not too objectionable. Each of them had a song or three I could relate to. And I got to listen to them without paying for their music because friends of mine bought their albums and CDs and such!

I think Foreigner was on a playbill for a large gig I attended, but weren't the reason I went. Can't remember if Styx was. I do know I never saw Boston or Steely Dan.

I do know I had a couple of lady friends that liked those bands, so I was at least smart enough to keep my mouth shut if they played a song I didn't like. wink

I still listen to them when they come on the radio, even given the fact the stations about wore them out when they were popular.

Neither

I like more of Foreigner's stuff.

Bad Companies stuff as well.
Styx is gay.

No brainer….Journey. Foreigner and STYX didn’t have their own video game on Atari 2600.

Don't get me wrong I like Foreigner a lot. I bought a CD of theirs a couple of years ago that had their demo tape at the end. They sucked on the demo they sounded like that Lame band Bread or something. Very mildly done versions of their songs on the first album. I guess when they got in the studio to record maybe the producer got them to convert their soft rock songs to real rock
Styx more talented. Foreigner some great songs.

Cv540,you are right, never heard that Styx song,I can dig it, thanks! My Styx albums start with Equinox.

I had that. Kinda like Frogger...you had to get the band from the arena, past the groupies and into the scarab spaceship.

LGBT's had to have someone to look up to.........
I like Styx, but in this choice, Foreigner all day, everyday.

However, if Journey was a choice, it would be Journey.

If the Eagles were a choice, it would be the Eagles.
I never cared for either, no, not at all...
Seen both in concert in Baton Rouge back in the 70's both were good. I go with Foreigner like their music better.
Foreigner for me
I have seen them both in the last few years. Both put on a good show. I think Styx is better. Everyone leaves their show with a big smile on their face. Styx has very good musicians. Foreigner was good though.
Two of the most-popular 70s-80s bands I can't stand are ZZTop and Foreigner. They're on the satellite Classic music station all the time. I always turn the channel to anything else when those songs hit. I think the Styx album "Pieces of Eight" was really good. "Come Sail Away" also is better than any Foreigner song by far.

Sorry, but Journey sucks.
Slayer ....
Far better than either of those
