I think they both had good songs in the old days but overall I would have preferred Foreigner... haven't listened to any such music in 30 years or more
I will say I saw foreigner with their new singer, he is really good, great voice similar to Gramms, but foreigner is just a cover band now. I think Mick Jones only plays with them if its a real big and important show. He doesnt do the tours.
Styx was probably the better band but I liked Foreigner better. Saw them both in concert a zillion years ago. Journey was better yet. Those were pretty wild times for a small town boy. I just gave away all the old vinyl albums from the 70's. It was quite a stack and brought back some memories.
Got to visit with both Mick Jones and Tommy Shaw at different times. Both were real nice fellas that didn't act or put on airs. Both bands were really good in my opinion. Too bad there's so much crap being put out now. Interesting fact is that alot of 20's kids are listening to bands from the 70's, 80's and 90's.
I thought both Styx & Foreigner were great in their best years. Styx lost my interest as they started moving toward POP & I don't remember about Foreigner but think they just faded away at the time.
Both had great songs IMO. As said, Foreigner likely had more. Gosh, so much rock to listen to at the time!!!
Wife is driving down to Reno this weekend. Some choir gig her sister is in. Fortunately just rain predicted, or a three + hour drive in the snow would have probably kept her home.
Now the whippets and I can do cool scheidt! ANd hopefully not get caught.
Agreed Geno ! Boston & Steely Dan we’re both much better IMO. Hard to top Boston’s 1st big album, “Boston”, released in 1976.
Between Foreigner & Styx, I’ll take Foreigner. Saw them live in 1979. Hell of a show.
Honestly chlin,
I'm not a giant fan of any of them. Don't believe I ever bought any of their music. I did listen too it on the radio most times, not too objectionable. Each of them had a song or three I could relate to. And I got to listen to them without paying for their music because friends of mine bought their albums and CDs and such!
I think Foreigner was on a playbill for a large gig I attended, but weren't the reason I went. Can't remember if Styx was. I do know I never saw Boston or Steely Dan.
I do know I had a couple of lady friends that liked those bands, so I was at least smart enough to keep my mouth shut if they played a song I didn't like.
I still listen to them when they come on the radio, even given the fact the stations about wore them out when they were popular.
We've had this comparison before on here. I believe most folks liked Foreigner more than Styx. I'm in the minority I prefer Styx because of there guitar solos are much better and elaborate.
Don't get me wrong I like Foreigner a lot. I bought a CD of theirs a couple of years ago that had their demo tape at the end. They sucked on the demo they sounded like that Lame band Bread or something. Very mildly done versions of their songs on the first album. I guess when they got in the studio to record maybe the producer got them to convert their soft rock songs to real rock
I have seen them both in the last few years. Both put on a good show. I think Styx is better. Everyone leaves their show with a big smile on their face. Styx has very good musicians. Foreigner was good though.
Two of the most-popular 70s-80s bands I can't stand are ZZTop and Foreigner. They're on the satellite Classic music station all the time. I always turn the channel to anything else when those songs hit. I think the Styx album "Pieces of Eight" was really good. "Come Sail Away" also is better than any Foreigner song by far.
