I am building a trailer to haul a couple atvs when I don’t take the toyhauler.
Toyhauler has 15 inch six lug wheels. I have several sets because I try to keep the tires relatively new on the rv.
Atv trailer will have tandem 1400lb axles so fairly light.
Trying to decide on using spare 6 lug wheels and tires or just go new separate 5 lug that can be lighter than the toy hauler wheels.
You got "several sets" Stay with what you have.
Why so light with the axles? 2800 lbs. less the weight of the trailer itself for load capacity? What are you making the frame out of?
Is it going to be tricky in finding a 1400# axle with 6 lug hubs? Rare to see any 6 lug hubs on anything less than a 5200. And, wondering about the length of the trailer with you wanting to go with dual axles?
Not trying to say what you should or shouldn't do, but I have a 6x12 with a single 3500# torflex axle that tows like a dream.
15 years ago, I built a 6x10. I wanted it to track with my pickup but I also wanted it to not have inside wheel wells. So, I used 2000lb tandem axles with 12" tires. The bed is flat and only 22" high with the tires underneath. I can haul 3000lb on it and it pulls like a dream. I'll take tandems any day over a single axle. They just ride smoother with less bouncing. The 12" tires don't last as long as larger ones but they've worked very well.
Axles of this size or smaller will likely have 7" brakes. I've only seen those with 4 or 5 lugs, never 6. You'll need 10" brakes to get 6 lugs. I don't think 10" brakes will fit on a light axle because the spindles are too small. You'll probably have to go to an axle of 3000lb or more to get 6 lugs.
I could go to 3500 lb axles to get six lug hubs or Six robblees would put 6 lug on 2k spindles last time I had saved up for project.
I have a 18 ft frame made from 4 boxed steel my neighbor gave me some years ago.
Our two quads weigh about 1300 lbs total. I plan to deck with aluminum. And side load the quads.
Looking to make a light 2 place quad trailer.
Axles will be torsion 1/2 axles.
