My son (21) and I are going to the mountains in the morning to see if we can drop a deer or two, and maybe snag some trout, before it gets too much warmer (it is well into spring here). We're only going for a few days, yet the truck is packed literally to the roof: fridge, chairs, stove, enough food to keep us going for a month, water, sleeping bags, sleeping mats, tent, gazebo, lamps, table, and all sorts of other bits and pieces. And that is not counting bangsticks and fishing gear.

Time was, I could go for a week with no more than I could carry on me. Now I have taken out the third row of seats in the 4x4 and even so I literally couldn't cram in another thing. I'm almost tempted to tear everything out and go through it a bit more ruthlessly, but I'm a bit knackered after packing it all, and I guess it is better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. I'll be several hours from home after all, so a bit far to duck back for something I need.

Anyone else face the same problem?

Enjoy the time. Practicing suffering doesn't add enjoyment.

When you return, cross it off your list if it

Yes, I suspect that is the guiding philosophy that I've been tending toward here. A nice fire, a comfy chair, all the trimmings.

Translates into a lot of trips to the truck to pack it all in though :-)

Gotta agree with Dave here. Enjoy the basic comforts you’re carrying with you. The time spent with your son will be even better.

Regardless of how much I bring, I always forget something.
