Stone point bow hunter is a Pard unto himself. We should emulate his purity and chasteness that he exhibits in his hunting craft. I'm throwing my rifle in the creek after I tape the objective lens with colorful tape.

Why do you have to puke all over this forum? Why don't you go somewhere you're wanted? Although I can't imagine where that might be.

To the OP, thanks for posting this, quite a feat.

He's right you know. The OP posted a great story. Any hunter would appreciate it, but you come along and puke on it. Why? Don't you realize that we're pretty much all sick of it? Grow up. Get some maturity.

Modern recurve or even compound, fine w me. Hell I shoot carbons from my Blackwidow.

Some purist blew me chit at a big trad shoot for that.

Purist..............proly wears goretex boots, drives a 4x4 and even has OnX.

Congrats to the hunter w the bear taken by homemade gear.

But I don't see where the "real hunter" label comes into play.

Hardcore and or traditionalist maybe better titles.
Illegal in some states

I say Congrats to the young man. He obviously spent a lot of time, effort and energy making his equipment. Not to mention the amount of research it took to be able to make his gear successfully.

That's dedication. And to end the story taking a 300lb Black Bear with his Hand made Bow and arrow is quite an accomplishment, Good job. Cool story.

To be fair the young fellow never claimed that title, Martin used it in the header and likely didn't mean it to be objectionable.

The problem with Steve Rinella and his gay ass website is that they embrace the ideals of the left when it comes to hunting.

i.e. shooting it with a rifle from 400yds is less sporting. And you're not a "real hunter."

The BHA will slowly push the same message.

Keep topics on an even keel... as it were.

WAY TOO MANY lazy comfortable fat fuggs lurking about... letting MY America slip away.

i.e. If you are not actively engaging EVERY enemy you encounter... you are allowing another to fight for you... and that is cowardice... plain and simple.

I've also hunted with a half dozen (at least) members of this site.

So there is a connection to the bigfoot incident? Do you still keep in touch or did he just use you and leave you?

The dude has a YouTube channel and from watching him there and talking to someone who knows him, he seems to be poison with his selfbow. Pretty cool as I’ve built one and shot it and it isn’t easy to master, I never did.

As far as baiting a bear is concerned. If you’ve ever hunted eastern Oklahoma where this season is you’d know that there is likely no way short of hounds or pure luck to get a shot at one otherwise. It is incredibly thick down there and the bear population isn’t huge.

I don’t know if he’s any more of “real” hunter than anyone else. But what he did certainly takes more skill and dedication or pure assed luck than smoking one with a crossbow or rifle. At a minimum he’s able to shoot his weapon of choice proficiently and he’s probably good at being still. Good on him.

And Rinella and his ilk can get fugked.

making the bow, the arrows and then killing a bear is quite an achievement. I missed the part where the article or the OP belittled the rest of us, or said other folks should ditch their rifles. What is it about the 'fire that brings out the worst in people? What was the incentive to trash an interesting thread or launch such rebarbative personal attacks?

Iron arrowheads were a huge trade item, knives and axes too. Old pots and other scrap metal would be reworked into arrowheads. For one thing iron weren’t fragile like obsidian/flint.

Same vein, by the 1770’s Iroquois leaders were saying their young men “had forgotten the use of the bow”, by then rifles were in big.

That guy didn’t ask a whole lot of that arrow in terms of range on that bear. Accounts say Comanches on a running horse could hit you or your running horse at 100 yards.

Longest recorded arrow fatality; May of 1839 where Temple TX is today, against Ranger Captain John Bird. Hit him center chest, single arrow, 200 yards. Prob’ly self bow, prob’ly iron arrowhead.

I dunno how much the arrowhead woulda weighed. IIRClots of stone points that used to be called “bird points” were actually used on big game.

The OP stated the guy that killed his bear is a "REAL hunter."

Which implies those that do not use the methods the article describes are not real hunters.

I'd think after eight decades on this earth you'd be able to comprehend this but I guess not.

However, debate raged on for generations between those who embraced the new technology and those who preferred the reliable performance they had come to appreciate from their expertly knapped flint and obsidian. Failures of steel heads which bent when they hit bone were gleefully recounted by detractors who posted about these failures*.
Regarding this story, there are several aspects not touched upon: Did he use natural bait (preferably using ingredients he harvested himself. ie, a carp caught with a handwoven net). Did he kill the copperheads, the skins of which he used for backing on his bow? There has to be more to the story. GD

*Posting, in those days, had a different meaning than today. There were tree stumps or "posts" scattered far and wide; participants would scratch their message on these posts, to be read by followers of the "sinew" (a connective tissue). Use of these posts was not without controversy with one participant who insisted on crapping on the posts. Many were disgusted by this but others found humor in it.

Articles and Government statistics, think about that.

Our wildlife department is less retarded than most other states I’ve experience with. FWIW

And while it’s probably not a really accurate count, they aren’t just thick.

My biggest complaint with ODWC is the deer seasons.
Archery - Oct 1, Jan 15.
Primitive Arms - Oct 28, Nov 5
*Deer Gun - Nov 18, Dec 3
Holiday Antlerless Gun - Dec 18-31

* I live 11 miles north of Red River. The folks across the river get to enjoy hunting season from Nov 1, Dec 31!
We get 16 days here in OK! 😖
I'm not asking ODWC to increase the bag limit (6), but the guys that have to work AND enjoy hunting, really take it on the chin!
If you don't have or can't get some vacation time, then you're basically stuck with a 6 day season.

I grew up hunting in Texas. I can remember when deer season opened on Nov 15th, regardless of the day of the week.
Then it changed to the Saturday nearest Nov 15th.
The last change was to open on Nov 1, regardless of the day of the week.
You had 2 months in which to work in some hunting time! We spent several weekends at our little 2 room shack, hunting deer, ducks, squirrels and the occasional feral hog. Not to mention the catfish out of the creek!

Here in Oklahoma, it's bust your butt to be ready by opening day, then it's a marathon to get any hunting time in before season closes. ...and T'giving, right in the middle of everything!
It may happen, but not in my lifetime!

Michigan is similar to that.

Archery runs October 1st through January 1st. Rifle season runs November 15-30. It made more sense when there were less bow hunters and archery gear and hunting techniques were primitive.

I like rifle hunting because I’m interested in firearms. Shooting a deer in MI with a modern bow or scoped Xbow out of a box blind next to a food plot isn’t all that much more difficult than shooting it with a rifle. I’d like to see an expanded rifle season.
Posted By: TheKid Re: Now here's a REAL hunter! - 10/16/23
We have twice as long a season as Texas does, you just can’t use a gun for half of it. A crossbow is an effective weapon and legal for all of archery, if gun season doesn’t work out for you then that would be your best option.

I think the Oklahoma hunting seasons are great as far as opportunity goes. Plus we have plenty of public land if a guy doesn’t have a place of his own. I think our bag limit is great as well, we can shoot a buck with archery or muzzleloader and then hold out for a bigger one with a rifle if we chose. The Christmas season is awesome for filling the freezer after most of the buck hunting is over with.

I love the long archery season, the fact that muzzleloader usually falls during the pre rut time when bucks are starting to cruise and can be rattled in, and that we get the opportunity to hunt the peak rut with a rifle.

Deer hunters in Oklahoma have it pretty good.

You think native Americans didn't take advantage of game feeding on abundance?

Back in East Texas, if you can find an overcup oak, you hunt around it! Deer LOVE those acorns.

They also drove game herds off of cliffs.

Are they real hunters?
Well, since Sonic hadn't come out with the $1.50 foot long yet, they did what they had to do to eat! 😉

The local natives also raided their neighbors, kept slaves and killed each other with impunity!

Were they real humans?

Our man deflave (Big Stick, Tarqueen) is like a train wreck in motion. You just gotta watch it. Unless of course you are standing right by the tracks. Then it's run for the hills. Stick, stones and words. You know how it goes.

I moved up here from Texas. My hunting buddy/neighbor* asked, "Where you gonna hunt in Oklahoma?"
Honestly, I had no idea! In fact, I had pretty much resigned myself to giving up hunting!!
I have killed more deer, bigger deer and better bucks since 2002 than I did the previous 50 years of hunting in Texas!

Yes sir, Okie deer hunters have a good population of deer. I just wish we had more time. Packing all your gun hunting into 2 weeks gets old!

* - when I told him about the hunting up here, he wanted in on the lease! LOL!

Sounds like you're the one that's butthurt and needs to toughen up.
a REAL HUNTER is able to kill game from 10-1000 yards with a rifle, if ya can't, then you're just another gundummy with a shi tty rifle who always needs to get close in or you'll fkn miss

see ? anybody can dream up a REAL HUNTER scenario
