I used to see one of these every now and then, but havent seen one in awhile. I always figured they were the most accurate rifle to buy, but never owned one. Do any of you guys own any of these? Any input?

.22 rimfire 40x .. only part of the original 40x left though is the action and part of the bolt...

I have my grandfathers 40x in .222 rem…. It has the original Unertyl 10x scope on it….. it’s fired probably 4-6k rounds and still keeps 5 in a half inch at 100.

I had two 40-XB for work rifles when I was shooting roo's for a living and to be frank they were no more accurate that the Tikka M55's I used. The main advantages were the (superb) Jewell triggers and the extra weight, being single shot made absolutely no difference at all.

I figure that using them for fifteen years for a livelihood gives me some small experience.





For interest sake...the scope pictured was a Leupold 24BRD that Premier reticles modded for me.

I have a 40XB in 223. Shoots very good.

I have owned two 40x rifles over the years. One was a 22-250 stainless with wood. The second in 22 BR, stainless with a composite stock. They both shot reasonably well, consistently hovering around .5 inch at 100 yards. I really expected more out of the 22 BR, However, the disappointment could very well have been self induced.

Occasionally, I would run across a production rifle that would match or exceed the level of accuracy produced by the 40X rifles for a couple of 5 shot strings. But in my experience, the custom shop 40X excelled when I shot beyond one or two groups.

I owned a 40X in .308. I used it in 600 yard matches. It was slightly less accurate (just barely) than my Model 70 30-06 with a heavy barrel and the marksman stock.

I saw one this weekend in 22 LR and the bolt sure looked like a 722.

Some of the 40X rifles used bolts like the 722, others like the 700.

The early 40X rimfires were built on 722 actions and had a round bolt knob. The later versions were dubbed the 40XB versions and have the Remington 700 style bolt handle. They are distinguished by the B at the end of the serial number. Both are great shooters .

I've watched the 40X market for a while now since I got into shooting them and I found the rimfires are going up substantially in value but the centerfire models don't seem to bring much more than standard Remington 700s or nice 722s in most cases, judging by prices I saw on gunbroker , gunsinternational, etc.... last year. Of course, now that I said that the prices have probably jumped up and made a liar out of me...

I have several rimfire versions including military rifles through CMP and one civilian rifle, both standard barrel and heavy barrels. My centerfires range from 222 Magnum to 300 H&H. One of them is a 7 Mag in a Brown Precision stock that I like to take if I intend to hunt overlooking a cutover.

All of my centerfire target types I bought used off of G/broker or Guns Int’l and there are a bunch available now. Like most everything else, prices seem to have jumped over the last couple of years. I keep watching the different sites for the 22 that I shot in NROTC.

I finally found, and bought an unfired Rimfire Sporter at a decent price a few months ago. I’ve just begun to figure out what it likes. It’s a single shot and I think I smile every time I work the bolt home. 😊

I have one with Kevlar stock. Single shot 22.250. 27 1\4 inch stainless heavy barrel.

Had an early one in 222 built on the 722 action. Very accurate.

Did the 40 X have a screw in the forend that put tension on the barrel ?

Mines far from OG…22LR with a cut bbl and sits in a McMillan. But I do love it so

I had one as well. Watched the prices keep going up, and got to the point I was scared to take it out of the safe, so I sold it.

Built a custom with the funds, Stiller, Rock Creek, McMillan, Jewel, etc.....

You won't find one much nicer than this if you're itching for a unique 40-X rimfire......

I have a 40X .308W. Very accurate with IMR 4064 and heavy Hornady BTHP and SST.

Yes, I had same problem and was scared it would get damaged in shipment if I sold it. A collector contacted me wanting to buy it. He had original soft case and box for one. He offered to ship it to me to use and agreed to FOB Origin terms; meaning when I handed it to FedEx he owned it. I pocketed some big $$$ and we were both happy. Though it was an amazing piece go gun art to own.

My cousin had a 40x in 22 lr.

He shot at least a case of ammo through it every year on gophers up here.

Yes, they did. From what I’ve read they worked but needed to be readjusted any time the wood of the forearm moved. We didn’t worry about the bedding screws when I shot one in competition in college. I think that pretty much became the SOP for most shooters.

I’ve read that some folks used a volt meter to find “contact” when the screw first touched the barrel and then adjusted tension from that point.
