Early (rheumatoid) arthritis in the hands and right knee. Who's got the best non-prescription home remedy for the working man who has to take a pizz test consistently? Temporary relief obviously.
Isn’t rheumatoid arthritis a auto-immune disease? That is a whole different animal than typical arthritis. I believe much of the treatment is geared towards knocking down the immune system to restrict the progression of the arthritis. The even use chemotherapy for this at times.

Doxy helps with my Lyme induced arthritis when it kicks up...
Rheumatoid arthritis is a completely different animal than osteoarthritis. If allowed to progress RA can do serious damage to the joints and a painkiller won’t stop that process. Do a search for RA symptoms and you’ll find a list of about ten questions that can point you in the right direction. That’s what I did with my wife and when I went through the symptoms, I got our doc to run a test and sure as shootin’ it was RA.
Go to a rheumatologist and get formally diagnosed. They will generally start with methotrexate and if that doesn’t work they can put you on a biologic or both.
I've had Rheumatoid Arthritis for more than 20 years. Up until just recently, I was taking 20mg of Methotrexate weekly until it started effecting my liver ( a common problem with many medications). These days I get two infusions of Rituximab two weeks apart twice a year and it works very well. I doubt there are any home remedys capable of relieving the symptons and progression of RA. Disease modifying drugs are really your only option.
I had / have juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, It has and will make a mess of me. I am 58 years old, thus far my hands and neck give me the most issues. But, all I have to do is wait, it will cripple me like it did back in my high school. i missed and entire year of school because of it. I needed a walker just to move around. Terrible.
Voltarin cream was a prescription lotion NSAID but is now over the counter. It can be effective for arthritic pain and reducing inflammation. It comes with some pretty specific instructions for use and is not to be used long term. I have used it conservatively with success. May wanna read up on it and see if might be beneficial.
There is quite a bit of scientific work being published on diet and auto-immune diseases recently. A common thread is that, as pointed out, a low inflammatory diet (low carb among other things), high fish oil intake and supplementation with vitamin D (as needed) can both prevent the onset and the rate of progression of auto immune diseases.

Diagnosed w RA this year. Weather is a b*tch and my job is also physical. The big swelling and howling pain hasn't come back since on meds (knee/wrist). But its ladder stand hunting tomorrow as my feet and one ankle are kinda fugged up. Always something jacked, then you try to compensate and screw something else up.
Active so had aches n pains, but this was different. Subtle for a few yrs, but not anymore. Knew something was wrong and reg doc was a dumbass, blew me off. Finally when it got bad enough, a wrist specialist knew and sent me to a rheumatologist.
So far, from my experience, it is NEVER going to be good. Its just a game of tolerance. Meds mess stomach up......even on a decent day, I always feel blah.
Voltaren cream for the right knee and one or two finger joint (can't use it on more than three joints at once). It completely eliminated my right knee pain. Also take a look at PRP injection for the knee.

The old home remedy is Gin & Raisins. Lots of info on line about this & even a website that sells them pre-soaked & mixed.
"Isn’t rheumatoid arthritis a auto-immune disease?"
I don't believe it is and it can also damage things other than joints. I had a cousin die from rheumatoid arthritis of the lungs when he was fairly young. I read somewhere years ago that rheumatoid arthritis is caused by a micro-bacteria and there's no antibiotic that will kill it without causing more damage to your body. I don't think the medical researchers are doing any research to find a cure either. There's too much money being made prescribing drugs to ease the pain and replacing damaged joints.

You don't inherit Osteoarthritis. It's caused by years of overuse that wears away the cartilage in your joints until you have bone to bone contact (very painful). I have Osteoarthritis in all the joints of both hands from years of hard work. I've hard 3 finger joints replaced with titanium/chrome implants so far. I got those joints replaced because they were keeping me awake at night and I couldn't use them anymore.
My mom had severe RA that started in her early 30's, I was just a kid then. One of the things that helped her, was finding out what her food allergies were. And there were definitely some foods that triggered her RA, big time! She watched her diet and someone introduced her to Shaklee supplements. Whatever your opinion is about supplements, I saw how much they helped her.
Agree with previous posts, find a good rheumatologist, don't mess around.
My brother is twisted up pretty bad from arthritis. He researched it himself (hard headed) and started taking something called Maringa Root if I am remembering correctly. He said he has not had a heavy pain episode since.

I was on methotrexate and sulfasalazine for a few years. I didn't care for the methotrexate but it did work. Then the sulfasalazine became impossible to get. I've tried THC and CBD can't say if it helped or not. Currently not taking anything, daily pain isn't an issue so much, it's when it flares up that my wrists and hands are like clubs and painful.

Going all the way back to the Atkins Induction Diet of the 1970s, people with either type of arthritis who went on radically low starch/sugar diets have noticed (usually to their utter surprise) that their symptoms had either disappeared entirely or reduced dramatically.
This would include also the Paleo Diet. If you try either diet, skip all the marketed commercial foods that are labeled as Atkins or Paleo. Just stick to the original diet.

Do some research.
Rheumatoid arthritis is most definitely an AUTOIMMUNE disease! OTC drugs can help with some pain but they won’t stop the deterioration of the joints. Lots of folks think they can just treat the symptoms but if it’s really RA, they're the ones you see later with crumpled hands that can’t even hold a pencil.
The doc said my wife’s RA was extremely aggressive and a combination of methotrexate and Enbril has pretty much halted its progression.
See a Rheumatologist….if it’s RA the sooner you start treatment, the better your chances of stopping the damage.
"Some types of arthritis run in families, so you may be more likely to develop arthritis if your parents or siblings have the disorder. Age. The risk of many types of arthritis — including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout — increases with age.
" Most of the men and some of the women in my family have or had arthritis My fingers have suffered the most, and the older I get the worse it is
I'm having rotator cuff and bicep surgery this Tuesday because of the car accident I was in. I had no idea that they could clean out the arthritis. My surgeon told me he will cleaning almost all of the arthritis out of my shoulder while he in there repairing the 4 tears that I have.
I have had joint pain in my feet and ankles for the last 15 years. Been to several Drs. and none had a solution said it was arthritis. I started taking blood pressure medicine a year ago and within a month my ankles stopped hurting. Heart Dr. looks at me like I'm crazy when I told him that. But it's the truth.

Small world. My girlfriend is having rotator cuff and bicep surgery on Tuesday.

I know it's classified as autoimmune disease that can damage other parts of your body and it's usually inherited. Nobody knows yet what causes though or how to cure it.
My mother got RA when she was in her early 60's and died at 70 from cancer. My oldest sister got RA her late 30's and died @ 50 from COPD. Neither had any deformed joints. They both went to the same specialist who kept them drugged up.
I'm the one with the semi-crumpled hands from Osteoarthritis. I can't close either hand tight enough to make a fist and can barely write (but can print ok). I consider my self very lucky though and can still do every I want to only a little slower,
Couch today. Last day of gun season. Knee and ankle swollen, hot and ouchy. I think I can hop around in a bit and get dressed. Never underestimate the draw power of a Mc Rib
First was the left elbow. Broke it as a freshman in high school playing football. It's now bone on bone and the only surgical solution is total replacement. A replacement joint restricts weight bearing to 10 pounds. A fall and break renders the replacement irreparable! Then I broke my left collarbone. Not as much pain, but still can cause discomfort. Then the biggie! Left hip broken and dislocated. Left foot, three broken bones. Right foot, heel (calcaneus) crushed.
Now, I know there are a lot of folks out there that have way more problems than I do. Bless their heart, I hope they are doing well.
I'm not sure that I have a joint that is NOT arthritic! 😛
I was asked by an orthopedic surgeon if I took anything for pain. "No sir." I replied. "Nothing?", he asked again! "Doc," I told him, "if I took a Tylenol everytime I felt pain, I'd be eating Tylenol like they were M&M's!" It's easier for me to just sit down until the pain eases.
Occasionally, I'll take an Aleve about bedtime if I feel like I may have a problem falling asleep. The rest of the time, if I hurt too badly, I will sit down until the pain eases up. I'm learning how to get around outside with hiking staffs. They definitely help, but it's just something else to keep up with! 😖
Taking prednisone leftovers from when wrist blew up. Rheumatologist said take 2 a day if i have episodes. See doc Tuesday, normal visit.
Took pics of bum ankle last night Its up in knee also.
Got chit to do. Hobbled around and got gloss Vari X II c on the Ruger #1. Bad lighting and grumpy, its close to square but proly isnt. I gave up and stuck it back in safe. Eye relief w one offset ring at rear will work. Turret cap got some marks. Put on matte ones from my VX1 ( sitting on 22 mag CZ457 ). Looks OK to me.
Fuggit, get new matte ones from Leupold or Ebay.
Buddy sent pics, he just got a Mossberg 800 AM in .308. Wants me to shoot it ( tryin to sucker me into buying it ). My 2017 anniv model Ruger 1 is only sporter .308 i need
When he said he got a mannlicher in .308 i thought he was talking a Ruger #1 RSI.......THAT i might have bought. Make my ankle feel better too LOL
Yup, an arthritis flare up justifies a new gun, scope purchase IMHO
FWIW had blood tests to see if I have RA. Some marker or something
Yup. Got it.
Now doc said if it was just one spot and I showed up w marker it proly isnt RA.
Unfortunately it ainy one spot. Missed a fair chunk of gun season due to it.
Hopefully recover enough for muzzleloader. Just got spme broadheads from Midway. Get things settled down and shoot recurve, see how many I can do.
It literally feels like theres no muscle or padding in hands, feet and knees. Everything on bone. But its not.
Thats just how it feels, its a different kinda pain. Much like broken bone. Deeper and weird. Sometimes all day low level electric buzz along bones, sometimes some heller friggin bolts
Voltaren works for me but my problem is just under the skin surface, not inside the knee joint. It doesn't penetrate far enough for deep joint pain and the instructions say as much.
I was skeptical when the wife suggested it but the morning after the first dose I was a believer. I have a tube in my pack if I need a backup dose when I'm hunting and thee tubes on inventory in the medicine cabinet.
It's about $8.00 a tube so it's as cheap as any non prescription remedy. If it doesn't work you're out 8 bucks.
"Hot swollen and Ouchy"... That is an extremely descriptive phrase. Also glad I'm not the only one that gets a bit grumpy, especially when the weather is changing...
One of our friends is a professional pianist, and he was afflicted with rheumatoid arthritis to the point of ending his performance career. A couple of years ago, he started getting a new therapy, not medication based, but an immuno therapy, IIRC. Last year, we went to his Christmas concert.
For those so afflicted, might be worth seeking out what's coming on the horizon in therapies.
If I stress a joint at work, banging on something, pushing......my arthritis will nail that joint. Brakes on racks, used left foot. Felt it flex a little extra. Now its been mad ever since. Took shoe off and it got real angry. Cannot hammer anything of susbtance, maybe tap pins out of a gun, but anything of moderate impact/vibe, will light my wrist or elbow up. Slight twist of knee...........yeah its gonna be cranky for a couple days.
Everything seems sensitive and any little extra stress, lights up.
I will. Haven't spoken to him for over six months, but I'll see if I can't get hold of him. Probably be a couple of days the way my week is filling up, but I'll post here what I find out.

With our aging population effective treatment for arthritis would be a bigger hit than Viagra.
I used to think Aleve didn't help much... until my doc did some blood work and told me I needed to stop taking it.... I miss Aleve now especially when the weather is changing.

Naprosyn (Aleve), as with other NSAIDS, is tough on the stomach and kidneys. NSAIDS now have a black box (warning) about effects on the heart. So if one's cardiac function is marginal, cardiologist will take that person off NSAIDS. Naprosyn, may be one of the hardest on the stomach, is actually one of the least cardiac toxic NSAID's. There were some new NSAIDS (Vioxx and Bextra) that were really good, but were so cardiac toxic or had such bad reactions, they were taken off the market.
Well, you can double down on Tylenol which can, (too much, too long), zap your liver....
Hmm....
Oh well, you not getting out of here alive anyway....
Verylargeboots: I forget which brand of arthritis (and there ARE many!) I came down with at about age 47 - it affects the thumb and next two fingers of both my hands. I was living at sea level in a moist cold climate at the time. Three years later I retired and moved to a dry high altitude area (5,400') and the pains/discomfort went virtually away and have stayed away - I almost hate to travel to wet sea level areas due to the pain/discomfort returning after a few days. The elderly Doctor I saw back then was VERY experienced and VERY knowledgeable about arthritic conditions (his specialty) - not much can be done about most arthritic conditions! Masking of the pain is a blessing - but reversing arthritis, I believe, is not yet possible. I wish you the best with your condition. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy
I tried to visualize myself doing the "bounding stride" like this guy when I was way out back and the chickens went ballistic. I lasted about 60 seconds. Then I shifted into the "Well I'm still upright and moving in their general direction" mode. When I did arrive, they were back to taking leisurely dust baths.... Go figure.
There are lots of Nordic walking clip on You Tube featuring older people over coming health/mobility issues. My Apple watch tracks movement and sleep cycles. There is a positive correlation.
