Why is there a fruitcake Season?
Posted By: MickinColo Re: It's Fruitcake Season - 12/13/23
As I remember, fruitcake was a winter survival food. Made in late summer and saved for winter.
Posted By: Ranger99 Re: It's Fruitcake Season - 12/13/23
Never heard of such a thing

Christmas time is traditional for having
fruitcake, but I haven't heard of Christmas
referred to as fruitcake season
Im one of the few individuals I know who actually likes fruitcake. Here in Georgia, Claxton is where fruitcake is made and I have a buddy who sends me one as a joke.

I'm one of many I know.

I like fruitcake if it's made like I want it, and
not with a bunch of throwed together mess
like on these modern cooking shows

Collin Street Bakery used to make a good one.
I haven't been there in some while, so I hope
they don't have some new wave management
and cutting corners and substituting ingredients
and such

I frickin love fruitcake, even the cheap crap from the grocery stores. "Fruitcake bad" is an old joke that was played out 60 years ago.

Collin Street Bakery (Corsicana, TX) makes a "pecan cake" that is quite similar to a fruit cake! AWESOME!
Used to buy one every year. The full size is now about $75/ea.
Even the little ones are about $20!

I like ice box fruitcake.

GamGam used to make them each winter…

Mix it all together and put back in the Nilla Wafer box…

The baked fruitcake, i don’t care for it…

Makes me miss RenFifty and the Christmas stories of him warming fruitcake in his shìtty little microwave in the man cave then spreading peanut butter on top for a late night snack.

Ah the memories.

It's always fruitcake season here at the 24 Hour Campfire.
Posted By: RockyRaab Re: It's Fruitcake Season - 12/13/23
A thick slab of fruitcake with a cup of brandied eggnog is the treat of the season. You can substitute a hot drink like cocoa, mulled wine, hot toddy, or Irish coffee if you choose. All good.

You can also forgo the American fruitcake and get an Italian Panattone.

Wouldn't doubt it at all
I haven't bought one in a while, and never bought
one outside of the bakery itself in Corsicana.
They always had really good cookies too.
The last time I was there, there wasn't any
parking spots, and you'd have to wait until
somebody left

There is no “season”. Fruitcake year-round says I.

My yearly batch has sat for a month or better now. It is in prime condition. I do make it as female (no nuts).
Tried it a couple of times

Nope, not for me

Only know one person who likes it and they are 55 going on 107

Not a huge fruitcake fan, but Claxton is the best I've had.
My dad's VFW post used to sell them as a fundraiser, back in the 1970's.

I’m with ruffcut; love both fruitcake and mincemeat pie. MIL made fruitcake cookies that were delicious. I’ve been craving mincemeat pie about 4 years and can’t find the mincemeat. Must be a seasonal commodity. Can’t find pickled peaches either. Love the pickle juice with cloves in it.

Posted By: RockyRaab Re: It's Fruitcake Season - 12/14/23
Went to our AF base today they had Claxton's Classic in a box of three 16-oz loaves for $11.68. Bought that and a box of pannatone. Planning on having one or the other with 'nog tonight. Also with a cup of tea in the afternoons coming up.
Gag.....

Makes pretty good deer stand food, as long as you have hot coffee or tea to wash it down, or so I remember…..

They make a great door stop. I used to eat them as a kid in the 1960s, but they went down hill gradually until they became inedible. I have a theory that they stopped making them a couple decades ago and that last bunch just keeps on getting re-gifted.

Forgot about Mary of Puddin Hill
Used to go out there every now and then
and take my elderly mother when she insisted
on making the trip. I guess they're still there too
