A few of the scouts are taking over my shop to make a rocket stove. So far, so good.

That's "Thor's Hammer" in the back. It's heavy as heck and a work in progress.

Is the hammer hollow?

No. It's a ridiculous 17 pounds of 1/2" rebar. They want to do a hollow one now though. 😁

We'll need a picture of the stove assembled and working.

Rocket stoves are great. I've been ruminating on an idea to make a stove that breaks down, and all the parts nest together. Just need some time to actually get it done.

Cool.

Do you know the weight?

It's a car camping/scouting toy IMO. Should be fun though, old school coffee cooking in the am on about camp outs.

Looks good..but why paint it?

High temp paint stops/delays rusting. And I have a bunch for the fire pokers we sell.
Posted By: Oklahomahunter Re: Rocket stove - 01/28/24
I can see my scouts being all over a project like that.

They have fun. I got a few of the Harbor Freight auto darkening welding helmets so now I can have three scouts plus me in the shop doing stuff.

So forgive me question on the stove. Never seen on I understand the concept but how does it work and fuel used etc
Posted By: lawnman Re: Rocket stove - 01/28/24
Ok do YouTube I got it know. Way cool looks great let us know how it does
Posted By: BigDave39355 Re: Rocket stove - 01/28/24
Cool stuff!

Kids in the shop is always a good thing.

It should boil water for coffee reasonably quickly using just sticks as fuel. There's a metal grate just above the vent/ash removal opening on the bottom so even when "stuffed full" there's air flow. Some don't have that, and have the angled piece of tubing where you load sticks separated into two channels and one is the "vent" for air flow. It's pretty easy to get the sticks burning, as it's the same concept as a charcoal starter with open air from below.

Didn't know it was hi temp.

Does it still stink when you burn it in?

only the first time. I'll "season" it before using it to cook, but really only see me using it for coffee. Gonna go old school with the percolator and wood instead of using a JetBoil at Scout campouts.

The right stove will start to “return” or gasify the smoke. Once good and hot, they will use very little wood and smoke much less as well.

I use them to cook jambalaya on open wood.
Posted By: RHClark Re: Rocket stove - 01/28/24
Take two pieces and bolt them to the foot so they can fold out into a T. You can use light pieces and they will greatly help keep it upright around a bunch of kids. Good job!

Actually Goalie, a shorter version would go well under this for when hunting/travelling from a vehicle base.

I’ll take it! 😊sorry I got carried away… what I meant to say is I would be interested in a price delivered to 11942 if the scouts want to start a small fund raiser/ business.

Is that commercially available or did you make it?

I can ask them. Let me search my scrap and make sure I've got enough to make another one. Wouldn't be expensive to ship.

Cool beans.................bitchin' even.

enjoy using it on the campouts

And, it's been awhile but I appreciate the hint about the Wiggy's sleeping bag every time I get to use mine.

Goalie, let me know if you have the extra stock and if the scouts are on board. Thanks!

Is that 2 inch square tube ? Have you built one out of 300 series stainless ?

Yeah, it was just 2" tubing I had in my scrap pile. It was the first rocket stove, and I didn't make it, a few scouts did.

Add a turbocharger and you got a jet engine.

Jeezus - did you read the thread?

My scouts are working on welding merit badge this weekend. I hope they build one of these.

They joined the metal. Not sure if call it "welding" 😁

I been reading a lot about these rocket stoves. Some guys are building them out of what looks to be 4 inch tube. I wonder what would be the optimum size tube for a 12 inch fry pan? Nice job? Great for the scouts.

Sure did. Nowhere in the thread was it stated who did the welding. It may have been implied when Goalie talked about having more welding helmets for the scouts, but in order to form an accurate conclusion regarding who actually did the welding, there was not enough information given.

Huh. Maybe I misinterpreted Goalies statement:

“Yeah, it was just 2" tubing I had in my scrap pile. It was the first rocket stove, and I didn't make it, a few scouts did.”

Good on you Goalie for teaching the young ones some of your skills.
Posted By: goalie Re: Rocket stove - 01/31/24
There are plans now to make a "big" one.

Without knowing the age range of the scouts, it would be impossible to know what the meaning of "I didn't make it, a few scouts did" actually means. Did they assemble it and Goalie weld it? Were they old enough to cut and weld everything themselves? Did they take it on as an Eagle Scout project and teach Goalie to weld it up?

With the information given, there are a few possibilities, and a couple of likelihoods, but nothing concrete until he confirmed in his answer to my question.
