Mr Jim

These are desert mountain sheep in high elevation Utah

That story was not what I expected when I opened it up.

I guess I have spent too many years around rural Eastern Oregon residents.

"Honest, I was just helping her over the fence!"

So the purpose of wildlife conservation is to perpetuate the species so it remains strong and viable but only the government is allowed to do that. The government does nothing well except create solutions that donā€™t solve anything. Seems counter productive to me.
So he cloned an exotic sheep, made a hybrid, without the permission of our rulers. Pathetic the government spent time on this.

His crime wasn't the breeding per se, it was the selling.

Iā€™m sure that was a great use of our tax dollars.

Dang. I was thinking we might have found Travis Clarke. Or was that Clarke Travis.

A few surprising things hereā€¦.

1) Cloning has gotten so mainstream even private individuals can do it?

2) People were so into this that they were willing to smuggle living tissue into the US?

3) The potential profits for offering presumably canned hunts for wild sheep hybrids were high enough that people were investing considerable coin towards it?

IMHO this ainā€™t so much a civil liberties issue as it is a wildlife regulation issue. There are many, many incidences of people releasing Russian boars, how long before people release hybrid sheep adjacent to sheep habitat.

Is Montana Man gonna give Florida Man a run for his money?

If so, Montana Man is gonna have to up his game and start doing things nekkid.

Hollyweird makes MILLIONS $$$ on a movie about genetically cloning dinosaurs... Meanwhile a Montana man gets busted by the Feds for making a few thousand dollars cloning (more likely AI'ing / ET'ing) some exotic sheep...

I got a $20 bill that says the guy from Montana was a Republican and Trump Supporter...

The whole issue is the potential for damage to wild sheep stocks. Now, there may well some people who would rather have hybrid wild sheep instead of our own Bighorns, and to those people, there is no harm. To those to whom our native wildlife is important, there is the potential for great harm. We have not managed to totally eff up our home yet (not like Australia, for instance), but some folks keep trying.
I agree that it is amazing that cloning technology has advanced to this point. GD
