On February 22, 1980, the United States Olympic hockey team pulled off one of the greatest upsets in sports history, defeating the Soviet Union, 4-3.

I was watching that game.

I remember watching that live. I was 12.
I watched also. 17 years old.
Patriotism was running pretty high in the country after that win if i remember correctly.
I was 14.

They earned that one, hell of a hockey game.

I remember it. The whole country was watching.

Great game, how many more posts will there be?

Well sunofabish.

I went back 5 pages from the front and didn't see anything.

Knowing there are so many here who violate the Official Campfire Boycott List and watch that dang football stuff, I just figured no one was interested in HOCKEY yet today.

No.
No they weren't.

A whole bunch if them knew nothing about it, and would have been glad to
keep it that way.

It wasn't a big deal.
I know no one whose life was changed in any way by it.

Folks really need to find perspective about sports.

If the US has won figure skating no one would care.

If they had beaten the whole USSR in math or science competitions,
no one would have noticed.

I was 20 and it was pretty darn cool to see our amateurs beat their professionals.

I was 10. Learned far more about it in my adult life when the movie came out, then during the time.

Nah.

"there in person"

"live" = "simulcast" = "in real time"

"Prerecorded"

There was a time when USA athletes in World Cup and Olympics were still pure amateurs as was the rule back in those days. But the European competitors had been hiding out of sight of governing sports entities and sending forth semi-pro and handsomely paid heroes to compete in these events without the same scrutiny that USA athletes had to undergo. So at the time, the hockey victory was a grand achievement. But we all know that in today's world, "amateur" is a designation in competition that denotes a level of skill and proficiency just shy of full blown pro. They get a lot of perks!

I have an idea. At this year's Olympics, if an American wins an event, instead of showing their actual medal ceremony, they should just run a clip of the 1980 USA hockey team during their medal ceremony.

I was driving home from work and listening to the game on the radio.

Get your head out of the sand , different strokes for different folks . the people who were involved thrived on it people who dont do sports not so much,, let each person glean what they can out of any incedent ,or peace or piece of life.

I was 28 and Minnesota was home for the coach, and a fair number of the hockey players on the team.

I lived in Minnesota at that time....It was an extra big deal in Minnesota.
Live broadcast in a lot of places.

I was in Fbx at the time. We got the program on tape 4 weeks later for the TV station to broadcast.

Yep, lots different then.
Could always go to the Dipper and watch the Gold Kings.

Good times
We won the Gold medal, but not that night. We had to beat Finland several days later to get the gold.
