Ken, we have fought this "one gun" thing for years, how about your knowledgable opinion for the best all around rifle caliber-cartridge, considering everything including factory ammo and reloading, for the lower USA.. To be used in all 48 states for all legal game from hog size up, for the average hunter.Having developed several cartridges yourself, your opinion of the best of the best would be appreciated by many. -- no
Allow me Ken:
I think you will find Ken favours the 358 Winchester at least for average range shooting, maybe more for bush country.
One he recommended to friends and others and even mentioned in I believe the Nosler fourth edition Load book.
Bill
Sorry if I spoke out of turn Ken.
N O, one word in your post -- "factory" -- bogs things down. For my own hunting and for other hunters totally liberated from dependence on factory fodder, I'd choose differently. If all factory loads were equally readily available, I'd choose differently. But life as she is and things as they are box me into a corner that wouldn't otherwise be my first choice. With ALL THINGS CONSIDERED AS THEY ARE, there's only one choice -- ONE cartridge that can do it all, over the entire range of game from hog and deer to elk and grizzly:

the .30-06

-- with good 180- to 220-grain bullets and a 1x fixed-power scope, with a real rifleman-hunter manning the sight picture and trigger pull
Ken, I just knew there was a reason I was so fond of you. Even if I do use a 2.5 Lyman Alasken! LOL
Ken, What IF the word factory is taken out and your hunting would be the (48) only?
the .340 Howell or (close second) the .350 Howell

(see 'em both at www-hunting-rifle.com)

Belay that -- I should've typed
http://www.hunting-rifles.com
Ken, the page is down at this time to me in Texas. -- no

How different is the 350 Howell from the Rem 350 Mag or the 35 Whelen?
Now try it (typed right this time):

http://www.hunting-rifles.com

The .350 Howell uses an extended .30-06 case -- factory-made longer on contract -- and holds more powder than the .35 Whelen. An '06 case'll do, if you don't fully appreciate the 0.375-inch-long neck of the .350 Howell.
Dr Ken, how does this round compare to the 358 hawk that Fred z-hat offers? tom
