Senate approves more money for border control By Donna Smith
Thu Jul 26, 2:12 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate on Thursday overwhelmingly voted to provide an additional $3 billion in emergency spending to beef up border security after lawmakers failed earlier this month to enact broader immigration reforms.

The Senate voted 89-1 to add the money to a homeland security spending bill for next year currently being debated. Republican sponsors said the money could help lay the groundwork for a broader immigration overhaul that could address the status of an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants living in the United States.

"It will make it easier to go to the next step," said Sen. Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican.

The money would help hire more border security agents and purchase vehicles, cameras and radio towers that mostly would be used to help stem the flow of illegal immigrants over the U.S. border with Mexico.

Some of the money could also be used to help law enforcement officials track down immigrants who failed to abide by deportation orders.

These and other enforcement measures had been part of a broad immigration overhaul backed by President George W. Bush. That bill, which would have legalized millions of unlawful immigrants, faltered in the Senate in the face of stiff opposition from some Republicans who considered it an amnesty that would encourage more illegal immigration.

"One of the things that those of us who supported immigration reform learned was that the depth and breadth of cynicism about the government's commitment to enforcement is an impediment to comprehensive reform," said Sen. Jon Kyl, an Arizona Republican who helped write the comprehensive bill.

Bush has threatened to veto the $37.6 billion homeland security spending bill for fiscal 2008, which starts on October 1, because it is about $2.5 billion more than he sought. The border security money was added as an emergency item on top of that amount.

Graham and others argued it would help strengthen Republican support for the bill, making it more difficult for Bush to reject.

Besides money for border protection, the bill also funds a range of post-September 11 domestic security programs, including more money for airport and port security as well as grants to states and local governments to prepare for terrorist attacks or natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, which devastated southern states in 2005.

The Senate is expected to vote on the homeland security spending bill soon. A similar, slightly less expensive bill already has passed the U.S. House of Representatives. The two chambers will have to work out their minor differences before sending a bill to Bush
Do we have a border policy? Guess it depends on who you talk to. I don't see any policy being enforced though.
"I don't see any policy being enforced though. "

That's sure and certain.

Where's the fence????
Ya gotta have a border before you can have a border policy.

Our southern border has been effectively erased.
I got a cheap alternative. Take the shackles off the LEO's doing the job, put some teeth in interdiction and Swift justice for coyotes and other such scum. Roberts Rules of Order. That sort of alacrity...

All the billions of dollars in the world aren't going to stop this. A little attitude will slow it to a trickle real quick.
i agree. a few at or near the top needs to lean toward stopping the insurgency.

at that point, the message will move with near instantaneous speed to the borderlines, the infiltration would be stopped overnight.
The situation at the border is as it is because the neocons want it that way.

Has everybody already forgotten how many arms Bush twisted to try and get the amnesty bill passed?
There is a boarder policy that is in force right now and fully supported by the Shrub and that is to have 'NO" policy at all just let the flood gates down and allow the invaders to pass on through. Typical Republicart policy of late.

Bullwnkl.
in my humble view, it's a consortium agreement between the neocons, the socialists, and the communista.

they all want the warm bodies here, for their own peculiar and particular reasons and incentives.

we commoners are the only group that didn't get asked.

maybe we can share our opinions at the next election, and several more elections to follow?

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot!?! Their status is CRIMINAL. They got here by breaking the freaking law, ferchristsakes. The only way to address the status of illegal aliens is to arrest the bastards!
Thinking completely outside of the political box, ....and all the Demo / Republi ....crat, ....Neo con, and all them other buzz words orriented places... may be a good place to start lookin' at this.

On one hand we've got Mr. Potato Head doing his "GuT" feelin'

MSM lightin' up another Al Quaida scare....

Feds worryin' about a concerted move on the part of some low life Salvadoran thugs....a power play.

seems to me to be a great time just to look at this in straightfoward and honest terms....

And before people that are supposed to be out on their bikes gatherin' bugs throw any more downside doom gloom and snide cynicysm at this, ....(which is inevitable)....lemme just say I'm sein' "Ducks in a row"......an opportunity, as it were.

A situation so penultimately screwed up that solutions become simple.......hell, we can work with that.

Stark, and no PC, perhaps, ....but SIMPLE.

....strikes me that an automatic execute on sight for known MS13 bangers would be a logical place to start.....anyone that thinks those gollums won't get in bed with AQ, ....guess again.

As noted, ....STARK, and non PC.......horses, ropes, and raids out of the fog, and the darkness.

This thing's been talked to death.......if there's gonna be action, let's be damn sure we win......

We will NOT get a second chance at this....it's no practice run.

Gloom and doom?!,.. oh,.. well hell,... we cain't be havin' nunna that kinda stuff creepin' into our collective consciousness. C'mon now!,... evahbuddy sing along!

~~~There's a big, brown cloud in the city,
And the countryside's a sin.
An' the price of life is too high to give up,
Gotta come down again.
When the world wide war is over and done,
And the dream of peace comes true.
We'll all be drinkin' free bubble-ubb,
Eatin' that rainbow stew.
When they find out how to burn water,
And the gasoline car is gone.
When an airplane flies without any fuel,
And the satellite heats our home.
One of these days when the air clears up,
And the sun comes shinin' through.
We'll all be drinkin' free bubble-ubb,
An' eatin' that rainbow stew.
Eatin' rainbow stew in a silver spoon,
Underneath that sky of blue.
All be drinkin' free bubble-ubb,
An' eatin' that rainbow stew.
You don't have to get high to get happy,
Just think about what's in store.
When people start doin' what they oughta be doin',
Then they won't be booin' no more.
When a President goes through the White House door,
An' does what he says he'll do.
We'll all be drinkin' free bubble-ubb,
Eatin' that rainbow stew.
Eatin' rainbow stew in a silver spoon,
Underneath that sky of blue.
We'll all be drinkin' that free bubble-ubb,
Eatin' some rainbow stew.
Eatin' rainbow stew in a silver spoon,
Underneath that sky of blue.
All be drinkin' that free bubble-ubb,
Eatin' rainbow stew.~~~
bordering on lunacy
It's kinda' funny to me.....
the proportion of folks that approach this with wry resignation, humor, and a Lazzaize-Faire ( Sp? ) attitude (let's call em' lazy fairies)......some of us just saw an in depth of this with the OSHA Regs deal........ask D.D.
Like this is Border thing some sorta' done deal,.....inexorably landing on us regardless of OUR input or CONTROL of this evolution.
Gotta' be careful, when you start callin people defeatists, ....or worse complicit 5th columniists....and Lord knows, we don't EVER want to offend no-one, do we....?
It's no bloody joke, it's the real deal, and it's happenin' on our watch..........
We are only the most powerful group / population of private citizens on the Planet at this moment, and nothing more....
Doom and gloom my American Azz.
All that said, it's not really a comedy show, for George Carlin wannabes.
You're supposed to out discoverin' America, Bristoe....not laughin' at it, on line.
So go collect a coupla million dollars, buy yourself into office and fix it.
Except you won't be able to fix it,.. because the people who financed your way into office own you and they don't want you to fix it.
So until you're ready to take the bull by the horns, you can stick the smarmy quips that you cast in my direction up your bunghole.
Here ya go, crossfireoops,... knock yaself out
Don't know about the whole border.
Down on the Otay Mesa the Border Patrol folks that I have worked with say that
their management wants them to be very aggressive apprehending "international
travelers" at the border.
The Border Patrol Management wants the agents to be lees aggressive with arrests
when the aliens are the farther away from the border.
Sounds like a step in the right direction innit?
I seem to recall the radio was saying 30,000 more border personnel too AND increased action against Americans who hire 'em.
I dunno, it was late at night on a long drive, maybe I was hallucinating...
Heck Bristoe, I thought the quips were directed at me ... wink
Until we significantly change who we elect, and for good measure throw in a more direct system to make the elected more accountable, crossfireoops and crew will continue running around attempting to piss on the ever growing number of fires.........
,... all while lacking the knowledge to unzip their pants first.
Actually Casey, It's kinda hard to get your arms around this whole deal, without actually gettin' out and lookin' at the ground, so to speak. Our local State shooting range, and the Ranches adjacent have had the problems described herin:
I guess for those of us who've lived with this for so long, it can get a bit aggravating to see it treated as some sorta' joke, or political football.
Believe me, ....it ain't.
Is there any significance to the 89 to 1 vote? Seems odd. How did 89 of them possibly vote the same? Is there some behind the scenes way this will turn into our Senators doing their will, not ours on this issue? ANYBODY ELSE SMELL A RAT?
Look, humor in the face of the ridiculous is a heck'uva good human trait. Some of the funniest dark humor I've ever heard came from Russians about their circumstances.......
We all get rightous soemtimes, and their are lots of burning issues out there. But we get what we vote for--and on this forum most of the regualar posters can be guaranteed to vote for more of the same in the Republican persuasion.
Right now, somewhere in America, we can be assured lobbyists for business groups who benefit from illegal/legal cheap labor are wining, dining, smoozing, and handing out campaign contributions to members and wannabe members of Congress and the Whitehouse.............May as well make fun of it--'cause few Americans will truley vote for any change from that status quo.
No different with the "War On Terror" and OSHA.
Ya got exactly what we voted for..........And it is almost a certainty we will vote for more of the same..........so may as well joke about it--helps to keep one's perspective........
No. The Mexican President in Washington D.C. has determined it's in the best interest of his country (Mexico) to leave the borders open. mad
Just yesterday I was in the wilds of the west Kootenays. Suddenly, in the middle of nowwhere there it was. It was a 20 metre wide swath cut through the timber on a straight line due east-west. There was a couple of strands of barb wire, the bottom one being about a foot off the ground, the top one about three feet high. There were quite a few places where windfall trees had knocked the wire down or the posts over. There were signs on the post saying that this fence marked the border between the United States and Canada.
There were 30+ million Canadians, and 300+ million Americans who couldn't have cared less about a delapidated barb-wire fence in the middle of the wilderness, because they were happy on their own side of the fence.
Life on this unmanned border line fence was extremely boring and idyllic due to the natural beauty of the country, and lack of humanity.
This lonely wilderness border fence was as they all should be - irrelevent.
