GPS stolen, now I need suggestions on new one.

A low-life thief broke into my SUV on Friday night and stole (among other things), my Magellan Meridian Platinum hand-held GPS. Now I guess I am in the market for a new one. I haven't researched these since I got this 3-4 years ago. I know a lot can change with electronics in that period of time.

I plan to use the GPS mostly for being out in the field with finding street directions a distant second. I'm not wedded to Magellan. Any suggestions for a replacement that will give me the same features as the Platinum - SD card, waterproof, ability to add maps, etc.

Also, my eyes are at the age where I need glasses to see stuff closeup - a clear screen with good contrast is essential.

I've been half way looking for one too. I like the looks of the Bushnell Onix. Nice features it looks like but they have not been out long enough for any substantive evaluations yet. Still, one to consider.

Been using my Garmin Vista and I like it!

Wife, Pup and I were out geocaching today with my Garmin Etrex legend HCx. I've downloaded the Topo USA software to it as well and I'm very pleased with it.

Has anyone used any of the Magellan eXplorists? I still have my Magellan software and perhaps I could use it with it (maybe).

Thanks for sending that link. I tried it and liked how they set things up. Magellan doesn't seem to be making people happy lately. The Magellan groups on Yahoo are very disappointed with the company.

Well, the only GPS I've owned is a Magellan Meridian Color. I really like it, but have no basis of comparison, except that when I've been out with Garmin users while geocaching, I seem to be able to get a better signal through trees and in narrow canyons than the Garmin guys. Other than that, no real difference.

However, Magellan no longer supports my unit, either with firmware updates or updates to my map disks (MapSend Direct Route). So if this unit dies, I'm probably going to look hard at Garmin.
